Too bad, the accompanying rap video would have been off the chain.

He's Will farking Smith.  He's up there on par with Tom Hanks.  He can afford to be choosy.

Probably the scene of Django hanging upside down with full frontal male nudity was too much.

/I thought it was myself.

The thing is, Hanks doesn't consistently suck these days.  Also, Smith has a pretty poor reputation in Hollywood: he's constantly "developing" projects, yet makes few films, which means he's constantly burning studio money.  Hanks, on the other hand, tends to only get involved in things that get carried to completion, and you see his producer credit all over the place.

Yeah, I'm happier that Foxx did it and it sounds (from the article) that Will Smith is too.  Plus he is right, Foxx wasn't the main character.  Keep hatin though

I believe this headline "begs the question".

I avoided seeing the movie for months because something about Jamie Foxx really bugs me. But after seeing it, I think he was the right choice. He is edgy enough that he could pull off the violence, but funny and self-depreciating enough that he was whole heartedly committed to the scenes where he looked naïve and ridiculous. I think he is a much better actor than Will Smith.

Smith's "Aw hell naw!" shtick and hamming would have completely ruined the dynamic between King and Django.

2013-03-25 01:32:45 PM
Geez, since when do actors tell directors how the film should go? If I was QT and he was telling me that Django has to kill the bad guy, I would have told him to fark off, I'll find someone else.
/also glad WS wasn't in it, the whole movie would have had a weird vibe to me

This.

I enjoy Will Smith doing his schtick in the right movie. But not for this one.

Fox nailed the right tone for Django ... I don't think Smith could pull off the student aspect of the role.

Win win, I guess. Foxx is a far superior actor. Though any idiot could tell you that after watching Independence Day and Booty Call. Or Ali and Ray. Either or.

All I know is after watching the new trailer for After Earth, they basically gave the whole plot away and somehow I don't see Will Smith surviving.

I think that would have been a draw if Smith pulled it off.

Travolta got a reboot from Tarantino, worked out nice for him.

i haven't seen many Will Smith movies but yeah, he has a "thing" in his movies that gets annoying.  although in fairness, my wife said his "the sekrit to hapiness" (or whatever, cutesy misspelled movie), he played it like a straight dramatic role and was really good.  dunno.

i guess since, duh, Django has to be black, Don Cheadle would have been a good choice but perhaps not believeable as Django unless he gained like, 30lbs of muscle.  Omar Epps but he's not doing much these days and doesn't have the star power Foxx does.

Or Urkel.

Trailer playing at theater
Will Smith: "do you know what planet you're on?"
entire audience: "uhhh Earth?"
Will Smith: "you're on Earth" DUN DUN DUNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN
entire audience: "wow, ain't gonna see that shiat"

2013-03-25 01:53:59 PM
I like Will Smith, and he can still open a movie. But I think Jamie Foxx killed in this roll and made the film better for it. Plus, a couple people have commented that an actor never tells a director to change plot points. No offense, but you have no idea what you're talking about. Doesn't mean the actor is right, but it happens all the time.

2013-03-25 01:54:46 PM
IMHO Will Smith is right. If anyone has read William Goldman's "Adventures In The Screen Trade", they'd get the fact that movie stars want to drive the action in action movies. While I enjoyed Django Unchained, Django himself is really a secondary character and does very little to actually move the story forward. If it wasn't for Waltz's character, Django would have never gotten free or gotten anywhere even close to saving his wife.

2013-03-25 01:54:54 PM
Tarantino says he never offered Smith squat, and I tend to believe him.

I just figured it was because Will Smith never does R-rated movies...but then I discovered he was in "Enemy of the State" which was, for some reason.

I don't think he's done a restricted move since, though.

hmmm....what semi-obscure 80s R&B / proto hip-hop song would have been 99.3% ripped off in its entirety, but for:

"Me and Doc King-Shultz roamin' across the South
Killin' slavemasters, ID'd by word of mouth
Went to Candyland to find my Brunhilda
Death warrant in my hand so I killed' ya
Got me a purple suit so I look like Lord Fauntleroy
What up Doc K-S? "EXCUSE ME, HOLLA ATCHA BOY!"
Leo DiCaprio with a speech on trepanning
Doc K-S cut him down with a gun like "blammin'"
They tried to cut my nuts off but I didn't let 'em
Sucka MCs they step to me and Doc but we don't sweat 'em
Samuel L Jackson tried to put me on cockblock
So I blew up his house, knock knock knock

Chorus:

For anyone who's seen the trailer to that flick, is it just me, or when WS says the world 'Earth' is he putting in a little extra enunciation on the 'TH'?  I'll admit, it was the only thing I was concentrating on when I watched the trailer. To Earf, or not to Earf, that was the question in my mind.

I can't watch Will smith without imagining any minute he'll smirk and act like a clown, so any serious roles he does don't really work for me.
I'm totally fine if your mileage varies, mileage should vary.

Thank you.  I just can't seem to get anyone to appreciate that movie.  His Martin Luther King, Jr. helped that scene, too.  Tommy Davidson was pretty great also.  And Bernie Mac.  And Gedde Watanabe.  And Scott LaRose and Art Malik....

Well, I guess this one's going back in the queue.

Would there be a spot for another Alfonso Ribiero cameo in the video?

Interestingly, since he talked about having to be the lead, he seems to be a supporting character in AE. (It looks to me as well that he's maybe unable to walk?)

I'm betting he's more willing to give up the lead when his son is the one taking his spot.

After Earth did look mildly interesting at first, but when I found out M. Night Shyamalan was directing, it instantly became rental only.

QT got the performance of his life (well, one of the; he was awesome in Blow Out as well) out of Travolta, so if anyone could get a decent, consistent role out of Will Smith, it would be him (now that Kubrick is dead).

The extended dance remix / club mix has your boys J-Biebz and Lil' Wayne doing a rap with the hook being a sample of "Ebony and Ivory".

In the end though, he was a fan of the film. "I thought it was brilliant," he told EW. "Just not for me."

He's right. It wasn't for him.

I knew people had issues with his plots/writing, but have always found him to be an above average director.

Will Smith probably would have been great in that role. Foxx was. Where is the problem here? Did anyone else think Waltz was the Jew Hunter Goes West?

Honestly, I like both as actors...though Jamie Foxx was a better fit for this role.  He has an intensity and rage beneath the surface that played better in this role than what Smith would do with it.
