Prime example of why the immigrant debate is so much more than "they took our jerbs!" He was a 1-year-old boy who didn't decide to move to another country... Legally or not.

Muñoz now has a driver's license. He bought a car. He went out and found not one, but two jobs. He works at a factory and on his days off works at a restaurant. "I work seven days a week, but that's OK because I'm saving money to go to school and help my family," he said.

Sounds reasonable.  I've always used utility bills (to prove residency) but this is far from the weirdest thing I've heard of someone using to establish such.  Though personally I'd probably go with asking my credit card company to provide verification of my billing address in a case like this.

(Well, I mean, in reality I'd use my selective service registration because I'm a citizen by birth, but hypothetically.)

AverageAmericanGuy: So his family is going to be sent back now that we know where they are, right?

The article implies probably yes, though outside of the info provided by TFA I can tell you that deportation of people with expired visas is actually very low priority.  My old co-worker's wife overstayed by a couple of years before they even bothered asking (and was married and had a kid, which was why she hadn't thought about actually applying for status, I suspect).  Man, that was a fun two years of paperwork for basically everyone in the lab to tell Uncle Sam they weren't "fake married" for residency.

Well, without the fear of deportation, he found 2 - TWO! - jobs (which means more tax revenue for Uncle Samchez) and bought a car (sales tax, plus licensure and registration), and now he has no time to play video games.

He did it undercover because he was not able to use it as proof of residency. Plus since becoming on adult finishing school in 2005 13 years ago he could not legal find his path to citizenship, he is just not trying!

You know, after college I had a few months of downtime waiting for a security clearance before I started working for the government, so I spent it much like this guy did, mooching off my parents and laying about the house.  It was so maddeningly boring that I went and got a civilian job to pass the time, found out I liked it and stayed there.  I cannot even imagine this guy doing that shiat for 8 years.  I'd have been on the first plane back to Mexico if I was him.
I guess the fact that he managed to stick it through says something about his determination and employability.

Nothing clues them in - NOTHING. My mom was in the US for her vacation (she wanted to go to Disneyland!) and ended up going into labor early. So there I am, laying in the NICU in SoCal and she's dividing her time between hovering as close to me as allowed and being overly polite with immigration officials and lawyers and embassy dudes and.... Well, I'm in my 40's now and mom is legal now (dad died some years back), but she did tell me once she got really mad because "they" accused her of intentionally going into labor so she could stay in the US, far, far from home.

You don't need a ss# to attend elementary, middle, or high school. All you need is residence within the school district. The Supreme Court ruled a long time ago that denying basic education to children because of the actions of their parents is unconstitutional.

KimNorth: Did he not go to school or did he go on a stolen ss#? Did I miss that part?

You didn't used to need a SS# to attend primary school in California. He's about the same age as my son, and I didn't need to provide one to enroll him. So since the article dude started school in Cali, chances are they would have just sent for his transcripts from Cali when he enrolled in Milwaukee after third grade.

Also, a fake alien registration number is easier to get and pass off as genuine. A lot of people don't know what a green card looks like, so they can buy a copy of someone's card, and even if it's obviously fake to someone who has seen them before (such as not having the right thumb print - HUGE giveaway), the dude or dudette behind the counter at the local rundown elementary school is either not going to know or not going to care.

My maths say a primary and seconadary education in the cheese state is around $5,000 per year, so 12 years x $5000 = $60,000.  I wonder if his family paid that much in taxes?  If they did, he can stay.

TFA: "At some point in the consultation, I learned that he played video games and, although I'm 41, that's an interest of mine," said Odrcic.

It's amusing how even gamers are still conditioned by society to believe that video games are really only for kids and young people.

There's always some kind of slightly embarrassed disclaimer.  "Yeah, I'm a mature, middle-aged adult, but I like video games anyway."

Adults are still reluctant to just say "I like video games," in the same way they might say "I like movies" or "I like this TV show."

Since undocumented workers do not file tax returns to get their moneys back as that will lead to the whole "fake SS#/Green card" (if any) outing of said worker, they just may have paid for his edumacation, and then some. One of the first steps to legal residency for such types (after the hiring of the lawyer) is to file a tax return, which I assume is terrifying.

My gf is much older than me(I'm 30) and considers me very childish for playing videogames and watching cartoons/anime.  I've mentioned to her things like the average age of a gamer is 30 and that there are many cartoons/anime are targeted towards my age and cultural demographic, but it's like talking to a wall when you're talking to someone that sees it as something for children.

Once he graduated instead of being bummed about not being able to go to college legally couldn't he have just applied for citizenship once he turned 18? No. If the Feds can prove the money you have was the money your parents stole you lose the money and probably anything they can prove your parents bought with said money post robbery. What we don't do is punish the kid in jail for the crimes of the parents.

Actually most illegal immigrants put more tax revenue into the system than legal residents because taxes are taken out of their paychecks if they have an above-board job and they never get the refunds for fear of being detected. As to sending money back to Mexico, they earned it shouldn't they be the ones to decide when and where to spend it? Or is that only for us white folks?

An illegal can file taxes, illegal immigrants are given an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN).This year year millions of illegal immigrants will once again rake in billions of dollars  Did you know that illegal immigrants all over the United States are using a massive scam to receive tax refunds from the federal government that are often in excess of $10,000? It is estimated that 2 million illegal immigrants are filing fraudulent tax returns each year and that they are pulling in more than 4 billion dollars in tax refunds every year that they are not entitled to. They are doing this by abusing the additional child tax credit and the IRS knows all about it and yet they refuse to do anything to stop it.

Yeah, no, how about you actually read something about the subject.  http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/money/perfi/taxes/2008-04-10-immigrant s taxes_N.htm
"Illegal immigrants are paying taxes to Uncle Sam, experts agree. Just how much they pay is hard to determine because the federal government doesn't fully tally it. But the latest figures available indicate it will amount to billions of dollars in federal income, Social Security and Medicare taxes this year. Indeed.

I once read a study on how much worse off the Social Security system would be if not for undocumented immigrants.

They usually have the payroll taxes taken out of their pay like everyone else, but since they are using a fake SSN, they are never able to claim those benefits.  Moreover, the immigrant population tends to be younger and more working-age than the American public at large (indeed, that's why they migrated, to find work), so they have a higher percentage of people paying into the system than the general population.

In effect, since they usually pay taxes, but can't claim refunds or benefits, they are effectively providing a free subsidy to the system.

One rough estimate puts the amount of Social Security taxes alone at around $9 billion per year."

They also cost communities more in tax money for cost on animal control, sewage back up, etc.. as they do not spay or neuter and do not understand to not pour grease down sewage gutters or cooking grease down sinks where the city has to go and pump the lines at the street in these areas.  The cost of education, policing, duel languages, social services on and on so just stop it!

The IRS want's everyone legal or not to file taxes so they give illegal immigrants an   Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) millions file each year for their tax refund.

I don't know whose derp you just C&P'd, but the ITIN is not given to undocumented aliens. It's given in lieu of a social security number for resident aliens who are here legally under various programs. The only way someone would have one and not be legally able to work in the US is if it was expired or stolen. They must be renewed every two years (IIRC), so I call BS on anyone getting away with that kind of stuff for very long at all.

As far as "it is estimated", pfffft! I say, PFFFFFT! It is estimated that a large portion of anti-immigrant derpage ignores the fact immigrants are also people and the amount fraudulently claiming things on their taxes they are not entitled to is most likely the same as the real 'murkins - also people - who consider tax evasion a type of national sport. People are people and the "hands off my moneys, ebil gubermint!" tax fraudin' people will be that way no matter where they were born.

Most lower class families with a daddy that only thinks his loins are powerful because he has 7 kids will not pay enough in income taxes to pay for the education cost of their children.

Its not very nice to think about Dads killing their kids because they don't want to pay the $10,000 education tax for each one of them --each year.  What we do instead, is spread the pain around.

It doesn't really matter if they are illegals or not, 75% of people aren't paying their fair share.

I thought the same thing. I've heard a lot of 'crimes' attributed to immigrants, living in Phoenix, but "they're ruining our country by pouring grease down the drains and letting their pets breed out of control!" probably takes the cake as the most ridiculous and pointless argument ever.

Let me provide some anecdotal evidence: I was attending a sociology lecture at one of the local community colleges a few years ago. The audience was mostly Caucasian. Living in Arizona, the immigration issue is a hot-button topic. The professor asked the audience how many of them had worked in various types of jobs, ranging from farm labor to business administration. He then asked how many of them, if they were unemployed, would be willing to take a position as a farm laborer. About four people raised their hands.

"They took our jerbs!" only works when they're taking jobs that us 'privileged' Americans might actually take.

There has been one big step: Games are now regarded more highly than animated TV, where before the moe-madness and MLP of late 2000s animation at least had a history of occasional maturity. Now it's games getting the indie cred that animation might have decades ago.

/Someday, NFL games will be televised broadcasts of Zombie Madden '33.

Politicians are between a rock and a hard place, one they put themselves into. Ranchers, farmers, construction companies, people who hire gardeners and janitors, all donate lots of money to campaigns and all want the lowest possible price for ok service (and would rather complain about lousy service than actually pay more). Politicians need the funding and have to talk tough to people who actually have to vote them in. I'd wager most of the raids that have ever happened have been on people who supported the wrong political campaign, since there has never once been any widespread roundup of illegals, even though we proved we target a large ethnic group during the Japanese Internment.

It's mostly the public's fault for believing pandering commercials instead of actual records. It just proves that you can lie to all the people all the time, if they want to believe the lie.

foxyshadis: xaratherus: "They took our jerbs!" only works when they're taking jobs that us 'privileged' Americans might actually take.

Wizard's First Rule. People are stupid; people will believe a lie because they want it to be true, or because they are afraid it might be true.

Wonder why no one has made an updated video game version of The Last Starfight where you can do the Death Bloom maneuver. I would play the begezus out of that game.

came here when he was one, parents were on some sort of visa which expired long ago. meanwhile he attended and graduated elementary & high schools.

Think his family paid more in taxes than his schooling cost? Somehow I doubt it. How much money did his family send back to Mexico?

Because it would be so much more cost-effective for the community, the country, and humanity as a whole if he'd been forced to drop out and join a gang instead, along with the 45 years on the public dime eventually needed to house him.

Reading (TFA) is fun(damental)!

My maths say a primary and seconadary education in the cheese state is around $5,000 per year, so 12 years x $5000 = $60,000.  I wonder if his family paid that much in taxes?  If they did, he can stay.

I don't know whose derp you just C&P'd, but the ITIN is not given to undocumented aliens. It's given in lieu of a social security number for resident aliens who are here legally under various programs. The only way someone would have one and not be legally able to work in the US is if it was expired or stolen. They must be renewed every two years (IIRC), so I call BS on anyone ...

Treasury Report, 2011:  Individuals Who Are Not Authorized to Work in the United States Were Paid $4.2 Billion in Refundable (Tax) Credits  (PDF)

Audit was based on tax returns files with ITINs.

From IRS Publicatiion 1915 (Rev. 1-2012), p. 10:

Can I get an ITIN if I am an undocumented alien?

Yes,... If you are an undocumented alien and cannot get an SSN, you must get an ITIN for tax purposes.

xaratherus: Let me provide some anecdotal evidence: I was attending a sociology lecture at one of the local community colleges a few years ago.

"They took our jerbs!" only works when they're taking jobs that us 'privileged' Americans might actually take.

meh, the problem with that is that those jobs traditionally don't pay what they're worth because skeevy employers traditionally hire illegal immigrants willing to work for shiatty pay, and because the government pays welfare to people even if the refuse to work those jobs.

Round up all the illegals and pay rates will skyrocket since all the employers will be competing to hire the 4 guys who raised their hands.
Then you cut off the dole so those unemployed bums have no choice go and take that small-but-conscionable pay to do those jobs.

Bam, finally an all American underclass for once.

You should learn what above-board means. It doesn't mean illegally hiring people. That's not above-board.

When I was in high school, I had a friend from Ghana, basically living under her parents' visas.  As soon as she was 18, she applied for citizenship.  I can still vividly remember how excited she was on the day that she received word that her papers had all been approved and she was officially an American.

Key lesson to take away from this?  It's not that hard to apply for and attain citizenship, so long as you don't sneak around avoiding the government.

Which is fine, when daddy and mommy don't cross the border illegally when you're 2 and never tell you until you apply for a job, as happened to my best friend's wife.

With a work visa? Just a wild guess.

It's extremely difficult to get a visa that allows you to live and work in the US. You need to have skills that are in short supply and have an employer willing to petition on your behalf. If you are just an ordinary person working an ordinary job in the UK or Spain or wherever you have no chance at all of ever immigrating to the US.

You need a green card for 5 years before you can get citizenship.  Do you know how hard it is for some people to get a green card?  It's not an easy thing to just become an American.  Your friend was very lucky.

It is comparatively easy for a foreign student to get a Practical Training (F-1) visa that would allow him to work temporarily in the US. From there, an H1 visa becomes a bit more accessible as an employer can claim the employee as especially trained and qualified for the position. And from there, permanent residence is the next step and maybe the hardest.

grath: everyone who is pissed off at this is ridiculous.

Family moves here with their kid, He's a year old. his parents raise him well, he goes to school graduates with honors and his biggest gripe is that he can't get a good job, so rather than turn to crime he does odd jobs here and there and plays video games.

he finally gets a job legally and now he's given grief.

People sitting here claiming that his family didn't pay enough in taxes? what about Mary sue with 7 kids on welfare? she can't get a job because she has 'stress' so she's on disability. There is no way she's paying her kids way for school, yet you don't say anything about her.

i personally KNOW a welfare queen that complains about this sort of thing happening.

I pointed out the hypocrisy and she straight up said "well I'm american so it doesn't count"
I called her a waste and a drain on society as a whole and haven't spoken to her since.

You should drop a dime on her ass.  I did it to my neighbor that was "handicapped" yet had no problem hauling their bike bumpily down the stairs for a fun ride at 5am. They moved back to Arizona to game the system there.   Also dropped a dime on the scumbag ID stealing freaks that I met over ebay and strung them along until it was all done.  They did happen to be illegals.  Mexico and Guatemala can split the bill on my wife's car that was hit by a vanload of em making an illegal (non-ironic) turn.  Cops thought it was too much of a hassle to process all 12 of them as did our insurance company so here we are still paying for some stupid crap that should have never happened 6 years later.  Real cool.  Perhaps my absolute all time fave was the lil Detrizzle piece of shizzle and his shiat fam that got moved in and proceeded to set up shop moving stolen car parts in the middle of the night (as well as the bar-closing coke run of 11-3am to come bumping bass home), buy and default on a restaurant to launder the money that was funneled in by a black only tax assist center.  This was all supported by a "rebuild black detroit" business loan that are the plaintiffs.  Lot going on there, but waiting for it to go from civil to criminal.  Pretty funny and didn't have to do a thing but complain once to the staff about the coke stuff and apparently there was plenty of other shiate they were privy to.  It is funny to read the court docs and watch bank accounts change for payment as the credit ponzi scheme crumbles.  He has made it as low as credit union, so next months payments will be that Montel Williams credit card or Bazooka Joe gum comics lol.  Just so nice to see after looking at the collection of $50,000+ cars that kept showing up in their collection.  They are proper ghetto though so assets are all probably hidden in minor children's names under the care of some auntie so no one can ever take it without a bunch of difficulty.  Good times.
