Up to your old Excalibur tricks again, eh, Centauri?

Love the story, but DACA is not citizenship, or even a direct path to citizenship.

That scene when the guy takes his face off for the first time - freaked me the f*ck out as a kid.

So he's here, and his Beta Unit is back in his home country not being loud

Prime example of why the immigrant debate is so much more than "they took our jerbs!" He was a 1-year-old boy who didn't decide to move to another country... Legally or not.

Exactly. Headline is completely misleading.

Muñoz now has a driver's license. He bought a car. He went out and found not one, but two jobs. He works at a factory and on his days off works at a restaurant. "I work seven days a week, but that's OK because I'm saving money to go to school and help my family," he said.

If only he'd gotten here a year earlier, he'd have been fine. Sounds like his fault, to me.

So his family is going to be sent back now that we know where they are, right?

Damn immigrants coming here and taking our high scores.

Maybe they should have renewed their visa; then they'd be here legally.

Am I alone in thinking that Centari was really annoying and that bringing him back at the end was just pandering to the audience?

CSB/ When I was really little I used to play video games hoping that what happened in The Last Starfighter would happen to me. All I wanted was to do the Death Blossom maneuver once. Just once. /CSB out

Wonder why no one has made an updated video game version of The Last Starfight where you can do the Death Bloom maneuver. I would play the begezus out of that game.

Sounds reasonable.  I've always used utility bills (to prove residency) but this is far from the weirdest thing I've heard of someone using to establish such.  Though personally I'd probably go with asking my credit card company to provide verification of my billing address in a case like this.

(Well, I mean, in reality I'd use my selective service registration because I'm a citizen by birth, but hypothetically.)

AverageAmericanGuy: So his family is going to be sent back now that we know where they are, right?

The article implies probably yes, though outside of the info provided by TFA I can tell you that deportation of people with expired visas is actually very low priority.  My old co-worker's wife overstayed by a couple of years before they even bothered asking (and was married and had a kid, which was why she hadn't thought about actually applying for status, I suspect).  Man, that was a fun two years of paperwork for basically everyone in the lab to tell Uncle Sam they weren't "fake married" for residency.

//You'd think the farking pregnancy woulda maybe tipped them off a bit, but whatever.

I watched it recently, I don't think it was pandering, I think it was setting up for the sequel that never was.  It wouldn't surprise me if the original draft had him and Xur die, but a rewrite kept them around for a possible sequel.

Well, without the fear of deportation, he found 2 - TWO! - jobs (which means more tax revenue for Uncle Samchez) and bought a car (sales tax, plus licensure and registration), and now he has no time to play video games.

Reading (TFA) is fun(damental)!

Or maybe he can become a CEO and make millions for bankrupting a company? Then the workforce won't feel so entitled, win-win!

He did it undercover because he was not able to use it as proof of residency. Plus since becoming on adult finishing school in 2005 13 years ago he could not legal find his path to citizenship, he is just not trying!

You know, after college I had a few months of downtime waiting for a security clearance before I started working for the government, so I spent it much like this guy did, mooching off my parents and laying about the house.  It was so maddeningly boring that I went and got a civilian job to pass the time, found out I liked it and stayed there.  I cannot even imagine this guy doing that shiat for 8 years.  I'd have been on the first plane back to Mexico if I was him.
I guess the fact that he managed to stick it through says something about his determination and employability.

I was hoping for modern graphics. That and the arcade game doesn't do the Death Blossom or the kid in the movie would have known about it already.

Nothing clues them in - NOTHING. My mom was in the US for her vacation (she wanted to go to Disneyland!) and ended up going into labor early. So there I am, laying in the NICU in SoCal and she's dividing her time between hovering as close to me as allowed and being overly polite with immigration officials and lawyers and embassy dudes and.... Well, I'm in my 40's now and mom is legal now (dad died some years back), but she did tell me once she got really mad because "they" accused her of intentionally going into labor so she could stay in the US, far, far from home.

/she didn't make it to Disneyland first, either

You don't need a ss# to attend elementary, middle, or high school. All you need is residence within the school district. The Supreme Court ruled a long time ago that denying basic education to children because of the actions of their parents is unconstitutional.

Think his family paid more in taxes than his schooling cost? Somehow I doubt it. How much money did his family send back to Mexico?

KimNorth: Did he not go to school or did he go on a stolen ss#? Did I miss that part?

You didn't used to need a SS# to attend primary school in California. He's about the same age as my son, and I didn't need to provide one to enroll him. So since the article dude started school in Cali, chances are they would have just sent for his transcripts from Cali when he enrolled in Milwaukee after third grade.

Also, a fake alien registration number is easier to get and pass off as genuine. A lot of people don't know what a green card looks like, so they can buy a copy of someone's card, and even if it's obviously fake to someone who has seen them before (such as not having the right thumb print - HUGE giveaway), the dude or dudette behind the counter at the local rundown elementary school is either not going to know or not going to care.

TFA: "I wanted to go to school, but if I got a degree from a college or technical school, how would I get a job without citizenship?" he said.

With a work visa? Just a wild guess.

Sadly, that's not how work visas work.

Wish they had made one, I love that movie. I had a big model (1/72 scale IIRC) of the Gunstar. Cat knocked it off the top of a bookshelf, It was destroyed, was in more pieces than before assembly.
