That was the art. You think it's easy?!?

And I like the music

You mean since they started ripping off the NY Dolls, the MC5, and discovered Kabuki makeup.

Do you guys remember that one song they had?

I always liked Gene's original idea - license out the makeup and songs to other musicians so they could tour as Kiss and Paul and Gene could sit home and cash the checks. That's some forward thinking.

I only know that one from the Bill and Ted film. I believe, like subby, it changed the face of rock and roll. But then, I'm a retard.

Ah a KISS thread where the 'enlightened' tell us plebians that we shouldn't like KISS because Gene and Paul are smarter than the crappy indie bands they like.

I rather liked Hard Luck Woman. Other than that I enjoy the songs with ridiculous, over the top sex imagery like Love Gun.

The remaining members of Kiss reminisce about their guitarist Ace Frehely whose untimely death left an unfillable hole in the Kiss lineup.

It's hilarious that parents actually thought they were Satanic back in the day. Of course that shiat carried on into the 90s with the death metal bands. You don't hear about that kind of thing anymore. Too bad.

God I hate that farking song.

Not good at writing lyrics? Well 3/5 of the song can just be one line repeated over and over! Fark you. Kiss had some good moments, but after all my cassettes became obsolete I never bothered getting Kiss CDs. Might still have an LP somewhere if I didn't frisbee it into the ether at some point I don't remember. But Kiss? Meh.

Never understood how they've managed to stay around so long seeing as they've only had like, what 2-3 hit songs, and when was the last one? 1978/79? Have they even released an album that made it to the top 100 since the 70s?

Mock Kiss if you want, but they were the best part of that Paul Lynde Halloween Special back in 1976.  Well, after the lady who played the Wicked Witch in The Wizard of OZ. And Billy Barty.  And Florence Henderson.  And I think Donny and Marie may have showed up.  And I know H R Pufenstuff showed up---that was awesome.  But Kiss were better than the commercials, damn it

I love the video of them playing that song.  It has no drums, but yet there is Peter Chris standing there pretending to be relevant.

Wikipedia says their last 3 albums have been in the top 3 of the Billboard 200, haven't been below 30 since 1982.  1998 album went gold, 1987 album went platinum.

Meaning there's a ton of people with money to burn and no taste in music? We already knew that. Look at the Billboard charts.

That must be all fans and word of mouth because you never hear them on the radio, other than the same 2-3 songs on the classic rock type stations.

KISS aimed to entertain and make money and they did both VERY successfully.  By 80s virtuoso standards they weren't good musicians, but by today's indie rock standards, they're virtuosos (and Gene is a better bass player than he gets credit for.  At .east in the 70s before he got lazy).  Inspired by the Beatles, they focused on melody and writing catchy singable songs, but they wanted to put on a stage show that they would want to see.

There's no virtue in being a starving artist.  Paul makes a good point when he says at the end of a show that the next band that plays here isn't going to be this entertaining and that you as an audience should demand a refund,  no one ever goes to a KISS show and says that they didn't get their money's worth.

KISS Unplugged was fantastic and shows what they can do without the stage show.  Good catchy fun songs.

They're the Grateful Dead of kabuki...you don't need a lot of fans. You need a narrow set of dedicated fans with a common love of shiat.

Terrific band; terribly underrated.  You go to a KISS show and you leave entertained - and that's the point of going to a concert.

Hey, marry this up with that Gallagher guy a could threads up. You could make it a double feature of schticky 40 year old acts. That's entertainment!

If I go see a band play, I want to see the band play the hell out of their instruments.

If I want to see fireworks, I go to a fireworks display. If I want to see a circus act...   oh wait, I don't. Ever.
