I'm going to his show at the Capitol Theater tonight!

Last show before it closes for renovations.

2013-03-24 04:34:21 PM
It could be both, you know.

I find Gallagher sad.  In the way circus animals are sad.

2013-03-24 04:37:34 PM
He's the last of the old comics from the 70s/early 80s being unfunny and screaming political opinions at white middle class people who clap and nod their heads.

/RIP George Carlin

Gallagher, by the end, has stopped being funny and has become something else, and it seems pretty clear that there's not much difference between the Gallagher now and the Gallagher of 30 years ago. What's different is us.

So much of this.  Yes, you can complain about political correctness ad nauseum.  But, as a white, middle classer of 39 years of age, I can attest to the fact that the white middle class has realized over the past 30 years or so that it's not OK to be a complete farking asshole to people just because they don't look like you or have a hard-to-pronouce last name.  Fark Gallagher.  He's a dinosaur, and I'm glad society passed him by.

Odd, I thought he was already dead

Gallagher became relatively rich and famous without having a lick of talent, and now he's poor and bitter about it.

There's a quote somewhere about how fame just puts a magnifying glass on the sort of person you really are. I'm pretty sure Gallagher is not one of the good ones.

2013-03-25 12:40:16 AM
And he's wearing a Bizzaro shirt...how fitting.

2013-03-25 12:40:26 AM
Listen to WTF with Marc Maron's podcast episode with him in it. I won't spoil anything for you, but it pretty much reveals what kind of guy he is.

Perhaps it's his brother, Roy.

AKA - Gallagher 2

He senses the Juggalos' unease.
"You're backing off on me," he says. "You want to be politically correct. Just be correct."

You know you're out of touch when the Juggalos think your act goes too far.

Came to say this, however this also caught my eye:

What's more, the media have labeled Gallagher a bigot, a racist, a homophobe, a crazy uncle, a tea party panderer. Lesser comics have fun at his expense.

It ain't just lesser comics. Pretty much everybody has bagged on him.

most comedians evolve over the course of decades
he didn't or couldn't

he was funny for like 5 minutes in the early 80's
and has been milking that ever since

Gallagher spends his days performing way out in the deepest recesses of county fairs throughout red state america, where he mixes his delightful antics of fruit smashing with long winded diatribes about obama out to destroy the true America.

I know, but the only thing he can do to make me laugh at this point is to stroke out whilst swing the sledge-o-matic.

What a sad, crazy, angry, resentful little man he has become.

Dice "was". No doubt about that. Last I heard him on Raw Dog sounded about like Gallagher. Unfunny, muttering, and grinding an ax on stage.

2013-03-25 01:07:04 AM
Local article from 2010 describing the modern-day Gallagher
Some quotes:

"Hey, President Obama," he spits out the name like a mouthful of burning hair. "You ain't black. I don't care what you say-you're a latte. You're half whole-milk. It could be goat milk-you could be a terrorist!"

Gallagher is upset about a lot of things. Young people with their sagging pants (in faintly coded racist terms, he explains that this is why the jails are overcrowded-because "their" baggy pants make it too hard for "them" to run from the cops). Tattoos: "That ink goes through to your soul-if you read your Bible, your body is a sacred temple, YOU DIPshiat." People naming their girl-children Sam and Toni instead of acceptable names like Evelyn and Betty: "Just give her some little lesbian tendencies!" Guantánamo Bay: "We weren't even allowed to torture all the way. We had to half-torture-that's nothin' compared to what Saddam and his two sons OOFAY and GOOFAY did."

He's in Woody Allen's new movie with Louis CK.

I've heard some recent interviews with him (Marc Maron in particular). He's grown up and explained what he says is the real difference between him and "Dice", and what's him and what is "Dice". It changed my opinion of him.

It also proved to me that Maron is the best long-form interviewer working right now.

eh.

Most of what he does now is unfunny, but I like his older bit about how the English language made no sense with all the exceptions.

that was funny, and kind of clever.

yeah, It's also an act anyone could write, and lots of people have. He put it on well, I grant, but then he gets his big yuks by smashing fruit with a hammer to make fun of telemarketers, a topic that was stale when Comedy Central ran his specials to death in the 90's.

Seems like the key to great comedy is to take your anger and pain and turn it into a narrative that is irreverent and relatable. Sounds like Gallagher just spewed a lot of anger without refining it first. That's not comedy, that's complaining.

All that is missing is a weekly column in WorldNetDaily.

I just want to say that Mr. Montgomery did an excellent job on that article. Very well-written and informative. Plus, covering the topic of a celebrity's kooky conservative diatribes without truly showing bias either way is difficult to do.

He's still has-beening around.  To be fair though, he was one of the biggest acts in comedy in the early to mid 90's.  Fame is fleeting though, and he can't fill a chuckle hut now.

Gallagher is unfunny.
Gallagher was never funny.
Other comics have done racist, political, homophobic comedy and were actually funny.  Even when you hated yourself for it, you laughed.
End of story.

Hope he dies a bitter old man.

2013-03-25 06:38:19 AM
I remember him being funny when I was a kid.  Found a DVD of two of his stand-up acts in a bargain bin and sat back, ready to have a good chuckle.

The chuckle never arrived.

"Well..." I figured.  "It is a bargain bin DVD - must have been the b-sides version of his comedy."  I searched for his other acts, thinking they would be better.

They just got worse.

Then it hit me...as a kid, I wasn't listening to the jokes, I was focusing on the fruit-smashing and other prop jokes.  As an adult, the spoken jokes weren't funny, the prop jokes were weak and forced, and the fruit-smashing was...well...fruit smashing.

Sold the DVDs at a yard sale and used the money to buy better comedy...some Carrot Top and Dane Cook DVD's - would have tried for better than them but let's face it...I didn't get that much for the Gallagher stuff.

That's a very high level of stupid.
