Not at all what I was expecting.  Under 500 lbs, for instance.  I'm not accustomed to (non-professional) cosplayers (from America) being attractive and healthy.

I'm not a Magic player, though.  Would one be outraged at the destruction of the cards, or are they all just bottom tier common crap?  I've seen some cards priced ridiculously high, and I can't figure out why they would be worth money to people.  Not saying they SHOULDN'T be worth money, purely ignorance.

Anyway, she's cute & a geek.  Three things that are a rarity together.

I agree.  It would be way to difficult to play with those cards other wise.  Of course the ones on the helmet are a loss.

There's no shortage of cards that are worthy of destruction.  Every set has quite a few cards which are just downright unplayable and come in massive quantities.  Hell, sometimes they make cards intentionally awful on purpose:

magiccards.info

I've literally got a banker's box full of awful commons that I use for what we call the "crap draft".  Most magic players have a similar collection because nobody will buy them, they're all that bad.  I have little doubt that's where this gal's suit came from.

Also, fifth edition is by far the tastiest of all magic editions.

That's a clever idea and she's pretty.

I saw a dude cosplayer at this one con, though, he actually went on a fancy diet and hired a personal trainer to resemble his WoW character. Came out more ripped than a ticket, but still all gamer-pale with that sweet indie-boy face. I'd like some PvP with that, know'm sayin'? Bro had a sweeter ass than three Pride parades and bigger junk than sweeps week on 'Hoarders.'

A baffling phenomenon, to be sure.  Then again, I've never been "that into" anything, enough to either costume for it, or to shiat all over other people for supposedly not being as into it as I am.  Of course, playing the "geekier than thou" card is a sport so old and tired in fandom, it was old and tired when "A wizard's staff has a knob on the end"" was first drunkenly sung by fans in a grimy hotel room somewhere.

2013-03-24 10:29:47 PM
First saw something like this in the pages of the late, unremarkable magazine InQuest.  IIRC, it was a dress made up of Alpha cards, complete with jewelry cut out from moxes.

/not sure IIRC
//not that anyone cares...

The bulk of the cards can be had for pennies, if not free. I play MtG but in limited formats, in which you open fresh packs and the competition includes 30 minutes of deck building. Because of the distribution of cards in a 15-card booster pack, (1 basic land, 10 commons, 3 uncommons, 1 rare/mythic rare, and occasionally one holographic foil that replaces one of the 10 commons), I can accumulate commons and uncommons very, very quickly. If she makes friends at the local game store or knows a bunch of people, finding bulk commons/uncommons is easy.

Its like baseball cards. 99.99% of cards are worthless, the rare ones are collectors items, they are sold in shrink wrap packs, etc.

Just curious;  What's the value (retail or fair market) of all those cards?  I ask because I remember my friend buying his first car a couple decades ago by selling far fewer cards than it would have taken to make that outfit.

I had to go into work today and had no idea this convention was going on. On the train back, though, a woman sat down in the seat in front of me and I thought "Wow, if she thinks embroidery all over her blouse and military style epaulets is a good look, she's very wrong." Then her boyfriend sat down next to her with his sword and I realized there must be some sort of convention in town. A Japanese sat down next to me and I spent part of the trip trying to surreptitiously figure out what sex he was . Boy George hat, dyed blond hair and sideburns--must be a boy. Sliver rings on every finger and carrying a large purple teddy bear -- WTF?

I was out walking around one day and saw a massive amount of overweight pale kids. I jokingly said "What is there, an anime convention in town?", at which point one of them said yes, and invited me along.

If I was to sell 1000 common cards back to my local game store, I would get $4 for all of them. Considering that a lot of them are basic lands and accounting for retail markup, she likely had the cards either given to her or they would've cost her at most $10 for all of them.

If you have the dual lands from Revised edition, they start at $100 each, assuming they're in near mint condition. Previous editions (Unlimited, Beta, Alpha) go up from there. If you wanna price 'em all out, TCGplayer.com is a good spot to go.

Depending on the format in which they're actually playable (ie: Standard, Modern, Extended, Legacy, Vintage), card values can fluctuate wildly. They also stopped putting cards on the Reserve List as of 1999 (the list of cards that they'll never reprint for any reason, except for non-tournament legal products and promos). Just to illustrate, Lion's Eye Diamond was considered a worthless rare when it came out (you'd have to discard your entire hand to use it), but it's since been banned/restricted in some formats and goes for $70+. Force of Will was an uncommon card from Alliances (4 colourless + 2 blue mana for a counterspell, or you can pay 2 life and remove a blue card from the game) and it's worth $60+ since it's the only card that will prevent your opponent from winning on the first turn. Meanwhile, cards from Mirage that went for $30 when they were current go for $1 or less.

Since June 1998, all cards have their rarity level indicated as part of the expansion symbol.  Black = common, gray = uncommon, gold = rare, red-orange = mythic rare.  (And purple = special, but that only happened once, and those cards aren't all that valuable.)  In the close-up of her axe that's on Kotaku, they're all commons except one uncommon.  Uncommons other than the very oldest sets, Portal Three Kingdoms and the one card Force of Will generally aren't really worth anything.

Some of the uncommon cards from current sets can go up to a few bucks, which is more than a lot of the rares that go for 25 cents. If they show up in a lot of tournament level decks and are viable across Standard and Modern format, they'll be worth something like Rancor ($3) and Invisible Stalker ($2), but they don't necessarily retain their value for long afterwards.

Force of Will is not the only counterspell that can be used without mana - it's just the best one.

I hope that when the Zendikar block starts rotating out of a bunch of formats that Jace the Mind Sculptor stops being stupid expensive (~$90).  Formats like Commander might stop that, though.

For readers of the above, it should be noted that Lion's Eye Diamond was a Mirage card.  Only two cards from that set are worth anything now, despite their prices when they were current.

I'd start a conversation with her about her opinions on gaming culture, and if we clicked, possibly respectfully ask her for her phone number with the intention of engaging in a social repartee at a future venue.

Am I doing it wrong?

Nope, not at all.  That is the generally approved way of finding out if a girl would like you to twiddle or tap her.

neuroflare: NewWorldDan: lordargent: Snapper Carr : Most of them are worth almost nothing. Occasionally you come across a very rare card that is worth quite a lot of money

I remember when a beta lotus was only worth $300, WTF happened?

// haven't played in over a decade

// cards in closet.

// the value of said cards is probably not enough to compensate me for the time I would spend digging out rares and pricing/packaging them up.

Well god damn. I've got probably 20-30 dual lands in my collection, among others (that haven't seen the light of day in a dozen years.

Since playing magic at my work has become popular I brought out my old ass-sliver deck. Many people haven't seen Aluren and seem surprised when they discover its synergy with slivers.

Running slivers (more than occasionally) in any of the groups I play with would be the fastest way to get your ass tossed out.  There's cheap, there's overpowered, and about fifty yards down the road is slivers.

Although... they can make for a good EDH deck, since having only one of each introduces a nice vulnerability.  Makes for more strategic games.

2013-03-25 05:00:58 AM
I love MtG but I have no idea how to play. Anyway, her costume was great.

2013-03-25 06:23:39 AM
Is it possible to fall in love with someone in 2 and 1/2 minutes? Because I think I just did. I don't play MTG, but passion for anything is really attractive to me. The fact that she was cute was just a bonus. And I loved the way she talked. Her voice and speech pattern were perfectly suited to her personality, if that makes any sense.

*Sigh*

Now I'll just go back to wishing I had the attention of someone like her.

Well god damn. I've got probably 20-30 dual lands in my collection, among others (that haven't seen the light of day in a dozen years.

What format that anyone plays would zendikar be rotating out of?

Surely you can't be talking about extended...

I saw a dude cosplayer at this one con, though, he actually went on a fancy diet and hired a personal trainer to resemble his WoW character. Bro had a sweeter ass than three Pride parades and bigger junk than sweeps week on 'Hoarders.'

I was not trying to a point, it was legit quickie search.
I should have filtered by sold, but even so... so many unbid cards at $0 would hardly point to $100 selling.

So, is there another market other than local shops or eBay.
Local shops in our piss poor town don't sell for near $100.
eBay is not selling for near $100.

I clicked the links above that have price point indicators and both SAY around $100.
So, where are they getting sold for those rates?

Might need to go to some TCG specific websites/forums. Go to where the market really is, your likely to get your best price there.

kroonermanblack: Are you going for misogyny, to make men uncomfortable? Because, uh, that's going to be difficult. Guys like the attention. And most cosplay era guys drool over are pro models anyway, who are supposed to be eye candy.

I wanted to see if the same creativity in metaphorical descriptions of attractive specimens of the opposite gender would work with the genders reversed, and found the attempt so amusing that I have decided to admire such people a little more openly, especially in situations, such as nerd culture, where males admire females very openly and females are quieter in expressing the same feelings. The stereotype-breaking incongruity of females openly perving on guys is, if anything, comedic, even if we're being perfectly sincere.

Most of the guys I find attractive at conventions are quite gay. That's okay, though, as a lot of hot booth-babes play for the girls' team and we females enjoy pairs of attractive gay guys in much the same way males enjoy pairs of attractive lesbians. And I know hot cosplayer guys are meant for visual-confectionery admiration just as much as attractive female cosplayers are.

Basically, I finally see the point of a behavior and am adopting it in the spirit of equality. We can all be happy, friendly pervs together, because in smutty fandom, there is really and truly something for everyone.
