Officials say a vial containing a virus that can cause hemorrhagic fever has gone missing from a research facility in Galveston, but say there's no reason to believe there's a threat to the public.

Well fark it, I'm not sure how else we can have a BOC discussion thread so I'm going with this.
First time I saw them live-- ExtraterrestrialLive--1982.
At one point (before my girlfriend threw them in a car trunk for a week in July while moving) I had 1st prints of every BOC album to that point (1989)
Favorite album cover after FOO

Yeah, Agents of Fortune was a better cover but the Escher 3d thing of this one really got my 14yo self intrigued.

A similar incident in 2003 led to one of my all-time favorite scientific journal article titles: "Destroying the Life and Career of a Valued Physician-Scientist Who Tried to Protect Us from Plague: Was It Really Necessary?" (http://www.fas.org/butler/cid060105.pdf ).

(After Butler reported some "missing vials" of bacteria that cause bubonic plague, he was interrogated thoroughly by the FBI, signed a statement saying that maybe he accidentally destroyed the vials, and then was arrested and charged with lying to the FBI about the vials being missing in the first place. Very confusing. He was convicted of a bunch of charges that amounted to minor bookkeeping problems. )

Uh yeah when you know to look out for it.  Like the Wikipedia says, it's "spread mostly by inhalation of aerosolized droplets of saliva, respiratory secretions, urine, or blood" -- note how easily sneezing & coughing on a crowded bus or shaking hands with someone who just blew his nose can spread colds or flu. You could for example swap infectious goop on doorknobs or mix some with water and mist people in the face. And what about infecting food with it, like at a salad bar? (I'M SPEAKING HYPOTHETICALLY, O HOMELAND SECURITATE, NOT GIVING ORDERS.) Or it could become epidemic among, or worse endemic to, our domestic rodents, to mutate or recombine and find new ways to spread.

To cut & paste from Wikipedia:

"Because the virus is contracted by aerosol dissemination, concern arose
shortly after the first cases emerged in 1989 due to fear of biological
warfare. Potential biological terrorism agents were identified and
categorized in 1999 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
(CDC) as part of the Congressional initiative to further response
capabilities to biological weapons [4] . Arenaviruses causing
hemorrhagic fevers, along with a genus of virus called filoviruses, were
categorized in Category A; these are pathogens with the highest
potential impact on public health safety.

A notable event in the timeline of this virus' scientific knowledge was
the unexplained disappearance of a vial of the virus at the University
of Texas Medical Branch Galveston National Laboratory, announced 2013
March 24.[5]"

I'm not saying  "Everybody panic!" but this stuff is literally deadly and does not belong in the American wild. Unless of course you mean to, oh, lower the price of Manhattan real estate.

Seriously?

The Stand starts with a supervirus accidentally being released from a research lab.

That accounts for the moon thing.  Where does Blue Öyster Cult fit in?

And yes, seriously.

You're thinking of just the book. The TV miniseries (as noted with the inclusion of pics of Laura San Giacomo) started with one of the all time greatest opening music sequences in TV film history... Don't Fear the Reaper was played while the TV audience viewed the scenes of the outbreak. Chilly and awesome.

Watched the clip that Hector put up. Hehe. Well, that looks a bit dated, doesn't it. Maybe it's the recording fidelity, but I remember the images being a lot crisper. Perhaps that's the pernicious effect time has on memory. There were a lot of hits AND misses in that mini-series, but I do remember it fondly. Some stellar performances and breakout roles.

Lyrics from the song are also printed on the page prior to Chapter One in the hardback edition of The Complete & Uncut Edition. Alongside the lines "This is the way theworld ends/This is the way theworld ends/This is the way theworld ends/Not with a bang but a whimper." (from T.S. Eliot's The Hollow Men)

I dont' know about the images' crispness, but that version of DFTR is not the album's version.  Different key, different tempo.  I could have sworn they used the album track verbatim.

The version they used was the one on the Career of Evil compilation because it has the guitar solo. Probably the album version vs radio cut
