Well, yes.

I might take rap seriously if they started writing their own hooks and playing instruments.

Interesting list, since them all being debut albums is a twist.  And as with most lists, it's rather lacking.

You include Kill 'Em All, but leave out Show No Mercy by Slayer?
You include Tidal, but leave out Little Earthquakes?

And this comment made me giggle:
#26:  A rap album? The idea was esoteric back in 1984,

Not really.  In fact, this duo was rather dull and predictable to listen to compared to their contemporaries back then.

Finally, lots of game changers are listed lower on the list than bands that won't be remembered a decade from now.  Boston, Black Sabbath, and Pearl Jam debuts should be higher on the list, for example.

the top ten albums alone is all the evidence anyone needs to see the magazine has lost all touch with reality

uh...isn't the top ten of any list basically the most important part? So why should we be surprised that, having reviewed the top ten, we are able to make a judgement about it, rather than having to continue farther down the list to make up our minds?

/subby fail

2013-03-24 06:05:51 PM
I can't really argue against any of the albums being included, though I'm still skeptical that anyone really still gives a shiat about The Strokes. I don't agree with The Beastie Boys being #1 at all, though. Otherwise my only other complaint is that neither Pretty Hate Machine nor the Stooges' debut album really that good, even if they're both enjoyable.

the only exclusion I can think of is Massive Attack's "Blue Lines"

funktilious_j: Hair bands doing some hard rock songs and power ballads. Then this monstrosity comes along.

And what do they do? Follow it up with hard rock songs and power ballads.  AFD is a solid album, but just extremely overexposed at this point... I haven't heard it in years, and really never need to again.

No, I thought William Shatner got snubbed by the hip-hop riff raff.

I mean, Shatner was rapping before the hippin' and a hoppin' and a bippin' and a boppin' was fashionable.

ekdikeo4: Lorelle: Subby is correct. Hendrix should have been #1, and the rap shiat doesn't even belong on the list.

Paleorific: Top ten are all worthy.  If you are not familiar with those albums... sorry.  My fave of the top 10 is Horses. Not only in my top ten debut albums but I would put Gloria in the top ten of Debut songs on debut albums.  Least favorite of thir top 10 would be GnR.

Like it or not, those rap albums, as well as Appetite For Destruction really did change the face of their genres.  Although Appetite has never seemed to really influence anyone musically -- can anyone think of anything else that sounds like Appetite, other than Appetite?  Being the highest selling debut album of the entire decade that it came out in (considering that it came out in late 1986) certainly counts for something.  I don't think there's any person who was alive and between 10 and 40 during that time frame that doesn't know it.  Except maybe the people who were living in a world that only included rap. :D  Which is why I can't say a lot about the rap albums, because I was living in a world that only included rock. :)

Weren't some of the songs on Appetite pretty old and written while the members were in other bands?

2013-03-24 07:13:00 PM
Erm, Hanoi Rocks sounded a LOT like Appetite era GnR when I saw them in '83.
Which if I recall was probably about the same time young fuzznuts Slash probably saw them too?
