I'm not sure if the Governor is cool with zombies taking care of his light work.

If you watched the Talking Dead episode where they go over the torture kit, they skipped the speculum for some reason. I guess it was just a little too rapey, but they did very clearly show it when he was unpacking.

I need to catch up on this show. I haven't seen an episode since the sheriff went nuts and kicked Tyrese and pals out of the prison.

So.... the Governor wasn't a gynecologist before the fall of civilization?

(Spoiler for those who didn't watch last week yet)

After his escape from the factory the Governor may as just well put on a Batman suit and be voiced by Casey Kasem

I don't know. I'm not crazy about zombie movies, so I stayed away from it. But this series is so different.

These good cable TV shows have a lot less than 22 episodes a season.

It's looking like Andrea will get what Michonne got in the comics. At least an episode and change rape-athon.

And there will be much rejoicing

I can see what the writers etc are trying to do here but they waited too long. Andrea is this season's Lori. If she dies at the hands of the Gov fans will cheer no matter how gruesome it gets. She had a chance to kill or at least Bobbitize him or just GTFO a dozen times already. No sympathy at all.

Maybe, just maybe Tyreese and Sasha will come to her rescue.

What role do you see Milton playing? How do you think the final battle will play out?

Personally, I would like to see the prison turned into some kind of trap for the Woodbury folks. They have the numbers but I think the Gov.'s paranoia is going to be an issue, as he seems to trust nobody except what's-his-name, the Mexican guy. And while the Woodbury folks are mired in the prison, a counterstrike from Rick's crew on the town. We've seen the Gov. training everyone, including children. I foresee some pretty hard choices in Rick's immediate future. Are we to assume this rivalry will be settled this season, or are they going for a cliffhanger? Is it going to be another mini-diaspora a la season 2? I think Herschel is pretty much dead...

Andrea is going to die and then everybody will be biatching when she's gone.

thismomentinblackhistory:

What role do you see Milton playing?

Milton's philosophy seems to be "It is better to be at the devil's right hand than in his path" He knows how crazy the Gov is but he won't dare cross him. So far he has a comparatively easy life because of the Gov. All of Woodbury does.

How do you think the final battle will play out?

Poorly. Because the writers/director have no tactical sense themselves. All the gun battles so far have been amateurishly FILMED not just fought. I can understand that the combatants have little or no training so they don't perform well but it just looks like terrible cliche by the numbers Hollywood firefights.

Neither side has any idea what their strengths and advantages even are over the other. The prison would make good Viet Cong style deathtrap. Rick's group should just fabricate a bunch of Wile E Coyote style booby traps and wait. Use the inner yard full of zombies as another layer of defense. Nobody is sneaking through that silently.

Woodbury is a giant pillow fort. They don't have enough bodies to properly patrol the perimeter. Every single night Michonne or even Daryll could stealth in to kill just one person and sneak out again. Panic sets in and the town falls apart. Or go one further than that and just toss a few molotovs over the wall. There isn't any more fire department. The whole place might go up depending on the wind.

The Gov has superior numbers and like any war this should get won by logistics. Camp a few sharpshooters in the woods surrounding the prison and plink off anyone trying to leave. They have a finite amount of food and ammo compared to the Gov and his army of scroungers. Starve them.

Either side should try to inflict as many non fatal casualties as possible. Make your enemy exhaust his supply of clean bandages, antibiotics and pain meds. Not to mention that a wounded person still needs food and water rations despite not being able to do even the most mundane housekeeping tasks. Dead weight breeds resentment.

I can't figure that out, because in regular photos Laurie Holden doesn't look like she's had plastic surgery.  But that show makes her mouth look horrible.

Not everyone is fully acclimated to this world yet. Remember when Hershel got bit ? He was worth saving. There is no telling the preparedness level of any given person to do that. Not many 13 year olds are as cold blooded as Carl. Hell, not many adults are.

It is mostly for the psychological effect not to mention seeding more resentment. Maybe the wounded guy shoots his would be executioner first.

Bit, not shot or stabbed.  Not everyone knows that if you die you turn yet.  Though it seems like in a town the size of Woodbury someone would have died by non-zombie means by now and they would know, but there is no evidence from the show so far.

Did the Governor get bit when he was swarmed by walkers? He was putting up a fight, then he let out a scream or growl just as Andrea was walking out (why didn't she disable the truck on her way out?) and he was holding his stomach at the end when he was talking to Milton.

This has been my thought for a long time.

The preview for this weeks showed one of the Woodbury guys blowing the crap out of one of the prison's guard towers with a grenade launcher. Wonder if anybody's going to be in the tower when that happens.

But there is. It's shown in Woodbury a few times.

A gunshot wound to the guts is almost impossible to do anything but comfort without a working modern hospital. I doubt they'd waste the penicillin and morphine on a lost cause like that.

Why are Woodbury's vehicles more realistic in age and wear in a ZA than Rick's vehicles?

I guess it's the "evil is old and dingy and grimy" while "good is nice and shiny" which the producers want us the viewer to associate common stereotypes to.

And to be perfectly honest, I watch the show for the blood, not the subtlety. I'm not knocking good story-telling, tension-building, character development, etc. That makes the story better. But when it boils down to it, I watch to see people kill zombies.

2013-03-24 09:40:31 PM
Well Merle tidied up the giving Michonne to the Gov story line easy enough. So far in this episode, he kidnapped her and after 40 minutes of the episode he let her go. This one's a real barn burner

2013-03-24 09:40:48 PM
Werewolf kid in AT&T commercial is annoying as all hell. Still, that's the recap from the third Twilight book.

Merle rolls into the distance, forming a roving gang of bigoted ex-cons in search of crank across the countryside

This is the episode where Andrea dies, right?

Possible, but I don't think he knows what he wants. He has a soft spot for his little brother, and that's his only redeeming virtue. He'll either "turn" or get killed. Probably both.

Even evil has loved ones and is capable of doing "good" things. It's the motivation behind actions that matters, at least the way I read D&D alignment.

2013-03-24 09:54:25 PM
I figured Merle wouldn't last the season. I'm hoping the Governor storyline gets resolved this season, but it's not looking like it. There's probably still an episode worth of material on Andrea being a captive and her rescue, plus the inevitable prison battle. With only one more episode this season, I'm thinking Woodbury might get stretched to two years.

But with his target right behind his last shot, why in HELL did he not double tap?  Or go full auto and unleash a storm.  He would have died but he would have annihilated his enemy and left the town under Martinez and quite frankly, he wants to do the same thing to the prison, but he isn't charismatic enough to lead the whole thing without it falling apart and tearing itself from the inside.

Martinez would probably also weigh the cost of the attack against its gains. The Governor will stop at nothing to destroy Rick's group, even if he's the last Woodbury resident left alive.

I knew he was British, but still wasn't expecting that voice from the Gov'na.

utsagrad123: Merle changed into a Zombie fast.

We don't know how much time had passed.

Wow
Merle just wanted to be put out of his misery.

Time for vikings on history channel. Anyone been watching? It's been a great miniseries so far.

2013-03-24 10:04:23 PM
So many good things. The ring shopping, the wedding, Merle continuing to act like an interesting character.  All magically wiped away by another revolting display of pointless and long winded exposition. Stop telling us and SHOW us for gods sake.

At least it was another chance for the entire ensemble to stand around motionless. There have been so few since the farm. Only four or five an episode lately.

2013-03-24 10:04:48 PM
Kinda bummed Merle isn't around to be the prison antagonist any more, but oh well.  DARYLS PISSED

2013-03-24 10:04:50 PM
It was almost a cop out that Daryl got to kill Mryle because he was zombified. It would have been more dramatic if they killed each other as humans.

Mugato: eagles95: If Maggie doesnt die next week...shes dead the 1st ep of Season 4

No way. She and Short Round are going to be the last ones standing.

Agreed. Come on those two are the only ones that are actually likeable. Kill them off and I have no hope for humans repopulating the Earth and shiat.

Crackers Are a Family Food: Call me soft, but seeing Daryl cry like that makes me want to cry.  Did NOT see that coming.

I'm there, totally agree.  The King of England (or one of them) is on to them and this will set things in motion to escalate their raids into full scale war.  They've been cranking up the mayhem, too.

Probably one of my favorite episodes so far and the Talking Dead is awesome thus far.  Love Nicotero.

At first I was a a bit incredulous when I found out it was a dramatic series instead of a documentary, but I've been pleasantly surprised so far.

2013-03-24 10:11:09 PM
Wasn't Merle ex- military? And The Governor was just an office drone? Seems like Merle at least gets a few shots in that last fight.

Yeah, Daryl and Merle were sort of the personification of the whole larger conflict. Merle becoming a zombie...well sure now he has to get killed but I think there could have been more drama if the two brothers faces each other each being not-zombiefied.

So in the middle of hostilities between the prison and town, most of the towns armed men come running when they hear a car stereo blasting, without thinking it might be a trap?

Yeah you're right. Vikings is getting more interesting as it goes on. Walking Dead peaked at episode 1. Firing Frank Darabont  was the worst thing that happened to the show.

/still bitter over what Walking Dead COULD have been.

2013-03-24 10:32:31 PM
Merle and Daryl are the two decently written characters. This was the only possible outcome I can see. The only question was which would be the zombie. Any other way of settling this plot point would have been totally out of character. And the writers are not dumb enough to mess with what is working.  (Not that they are smart enough to know why it is.)

The one exception I can think of is they kill each other Spartacus execution style.  That would have made sense.

PsyLord: CigaretteSmokingMan: Merl really didn't think his plan all the way through.

A head is a bit more solid than a deer's chest.

With the deer lets say the bullet missed the ribs/shoulder, and slipped it's way through soft tissue to hit Carl.
With the Governor lets say that the kid's head was about should height to the Governor, and anything that exited the kid's head was easily stopped by the Governor's bulletproof vest.

Now That's What I Call a Taco!: So why did Merle feel the need to bring Michonne along for half the run? Or was there a legitimate change of heart?

I wrestled w/that question until he decided to hang out in front of zombie central blasting Motorhead.  I now think Michonne actually got through to him.  He packed his bag & was going to use Michonne to get back into the Governor's good graces.  Then decided Michonne was right--the Governor's an asshole who turned him into a cold-blooded killer.  He could either continue being the Governor's lapdog or do the right thing and try to take him out.

The Governor was going to attack no matter what.  Martinez had orders to kill everyone once they saw Michonne.  Merle killed several of the Governor's best fighters on the eve of battle.  It was sound tactics, especially since he thought he would be able to get away.

I would have guessed the Governor would be on the death couch next week, but I don't know if they'd have him two episodes in a row. I have a feeling Andrea will be around for a while (and will likely be the one to kill the Gov). If I had to guess a surprise death next week, I'm going with Carol. Think about how much that would destroy Daryl after what he already went through in this episode.

It probably won't be Carl, he attracts the youth zombie hunters.  Darryl is too cool, Rick is unlikely. Maybe Milton.

The Talking Dead guy said it really quietly at the end that there will be a special guest celebrity, he must know that is the Bell Tolling when he says that.

Glad Rick didn't bind Michone with the CAT5 cable, that would have been a downer.

5. Fast And Loose
Two o' clock in the morning baby,
I know it's late, I know it's late,
I'm dark and I like the night,
And I can make you feel alright,
I've been around for quite a while,
And I've learned to make you smile,
I know you won't refuse,
You know I'm Fast And Loose

Two o' clock in the morning sugar,
You know I'm sleeping, you must be sleeping,
Why don't you invite me in?
Get yourself some original sin,
I'll wake you up, but stay in bed,
Don't get up, get down instead,
I don't need no excuse,
To like it Fast And Loose

Two o' clock in the morning honey,
Let me in baby, let me in,
You know me, you know I'm wired,
I'm gonna stop you feeling tired,
I'm coming over and I won't be long,
Just let me finish writing this song,
I'm gonna blow your fuse,
I know you like it Fast And Loose

I knew a major character was going to die in 100...I thought it would be Andrea.  I was pissed when it was Glenn.

I was going to say Merle, Herschel and Beth were going to die in the season finale, with Merle getting his moment of redemption, but we sorta had that tonight.  I don't know, I was finding it hard to believe that Carol would die, especially with her unfinished storyline with Daryl, but I don't see the storming of the prison resulting in only two deaths...so I'm thinking Carol may go down now.

I'll wake you up, but stay in bed,
Don't get up, get down instead,
I don't need no excuse,
To like it Fast And Loose

Two o' clock in the morning honey,
Let me in baby, let me in,
You know me, you know I'm wired,
I'm gonna stop you feeling tired,
I'm coming over and I won't be long,
Just let me finish writing this song,
I'm gonna blow your fuse,
I know you like it Fast And Loose

Mad_Radhu: RepoManTSM: TheLopper: wesmon: IronTom: NeoCortex42: Well, I guess we are getting the prison assault next week.

A target-rich environment it looks like.  Plus a mystery guest on Talking Dead.  Andrea?

My bet is on Glenn biting it. Though he did already appear on Talking Dead this season.

I'd vote on Maggie (though I wouldn't like it). Glenn brought up how he cares more for her than himself, so he'll be ready to give his life to save her, but will fail, and it'll create a shiat show.

They obviously set up the Glen will die saving Maggie but I doubt they off him until the final season. He's the most relatable character to the young male demo.

I Know they are changing things up, but his issue 100 death was a huge shock. I can't see them not have him get killed by Lucille.

If you mean stupid and "just to shock" then yes. The comic has been pretty lousy for awhile now. He uses up all his mojo on Invincible.

I guess it's the "evil is old and dingy and grimy" while "good is nice and shiny" which the producers want us the viewer to associate common stereotypes to.

Wow, Merle single-handedly (heh, literally) killed EIGHT of the Governor's henchmen? How many "trusted" dudes does he have left? Two?

I'm just going to put this in print before next week: I think the Prison crew are going to make a run for it.  When the Governor's crew come with their full on assault and blow up the guard tower, they aren't going to find anyone there.

In the Talking Dead's sneak preview, when the gov's forces/truck drive up to the prison gates, I didn't see any walkers milling around outside.  I bet when they opened that door - walkers.  Maybe Rick's team herded them into that 'breach' in the prison security to catch the governor off-guard?  Trying to find the clip online and failing.

BizarreMan: Zulu_as_Kono: I may be mistaken but I think Merle took out a couple of henchman before the Governor even became available as a target.

There were at least four that went down.  Maybe more.

The preview for next week has the Governor claiming "they" killed eight. EIGHT. I can't imagine the Gov has many left. Pretty soon his army will consist of nothing but untrained civvies.

They have to run, or risk spending another season on "the farm". But if they just hotfoot it down the road, they'll be low on food and fuel, and at most get a few hours head start on the well-stocked governor. On the other hand, if they wait for the governor and all the henchmen to leave, Woodbury would be filled with nothing but unarmed pacifists. Attack, stock up on supplies, burn Woodbury to the ground, and then hit the road. By the time the governor returns, he won't have enough food or fuel to follow.

As a lifelong Romero fan, I really appreciated the nod to the original Dawn of the Dead when Merle was starting his zombie army. I was hoping someone would have mentioned that during Talking Dead, because you know that was a Nicotero special.

I'm with Rooker that Merle's intent wasn't to kill himself but to try to redeem himself by killing the governor and his men. It wound up being a suicide mission, but he was really hoping to get the upper hand (and he may have had it not been for the zombie sneaking up on him).

I think that is how it was also. In his mind it wasn't a suicide mission, but something he could pull off. Remember his conversation with Rick about how he doesn't know why he does the things he does. Dude has serious ADHD and impulse control issues.

According to the CDC's Dr. Edwin Jenner in the TV series, a corpse can reanimate between three minutes and eight hours after death.[3]It was also once hinted by executive producer, Glen Mazzara, that the time it takes for a corpse to reanimate depends on how full of life the person was before they died.

Like I said: whatever's most convenient for the plot.

This is what we have come to expect and love from you.

Here we have the actor saying what he was doing with the character and what the characters thoughts were, right next to the director who was nodding in agreement, and you show up to say they are wrong.

You have made being arrogantly wrong about everything into an art form.

Walking Dead Wiki: In specific regards to the timeline, Robert Kirkman wrote, "The Walking Dead takes place in our world, as if this stuff had started happening in October 2003 and continued from there. Now, (Issue 38) in the book it's still only like... June 2004 at this point (If you're keeping track)."[4] "[The Walking Dead] is set in modern times ... but the book started in 2003 and only a year has passed in the book. But that doesn't mean it's 2004 in the book ... maybe it 's 2009 ... who knows ... who really cares. I don't want to be specific."[5]

So, according to Word Of God, the start of the outbreak slides with our time.

Trocadero: If you mean stupid and "just to shock" then yes. The comic has been pretty lousy for awhile now. He uses up all his mojo on Invincible.

I pray that the writers have more talent than to be thinking, "It's episode number 40--who's we gonna kill?"  There are some that seem incapable of understanding that television is a different medium, both as an art form and as a business.  If you had to guess which character on the TV show died as the result of a contract dispute versus their character arc winding down, who would you choose:  Dale or Merle?

TV is about watching characters you empathize with or despise.  While it's obvious that some characters have expendable arcs, I sure as hell hope the show doesn't turn into "random gory death to please fanboi #38".  Merle didn't die "because OMG zombies!"; Merle died because "I want to be with my brother.  My brother wants to stay at the prison.  I can't belong at the prison until I make things right".  It was a redemption story that ended in tragedy.

Or we could go the other way:  the Governor storms the prison, killing Hershel, Maggie, Glen, and Carol instantly in a massive cluster of Baysplosins'!  Hershel's younger daughter runs away with Judith, but is beset by zombies, that inexplicably attack her at her crotch; you know, because shock value is the awesomest.  As she's being violated/murdered, she looks to see that the zombies are ripping lil' Asskicker limb from bloody limb--I mean REALLY take advantage of high definition technology there.  Lots of close-ups and blood and baby screaming.  Then, as she's dying, the guy that is the "Governor x One billion eleventies" shows up, unintroduced, and cuts off her head with a spoon.  THEN he uses aforementioned spoon (Chekov's Gun!), to scoop out part of her brain.  Then he craps in her skull and throws it at the Governor, laughing maniacally (MUAH-HA-HA-HA-HA!!!!) !  The governor, startled and embarrassed at being covered in shiat, drops the skull, which then immediately turns zombie (that part of the brain was still there, you see), and drops it into his lap, where it eats his penis and testicles and he bleeds to death.  Poetic justice and super awesome zombie actionz!

David Banner The Away-Team  Rick and Carl then go into season 3 with a whole new cast of adventurers!  That the TV audience is somehow supposed to sympathize with, rather than mock for being so expendable.

If I am expected to give a shiat about this show and its characters, I want to watch the stories of a group that at least partially manages to survive [that is what television, and narrative storytelling is about].  I want the deaths of characters I've been told to sympathize with to mean something.  I don't want to watch the "Rick and Carl and a bunch of wasted character plot lines/we gotta fill 44 minutes show."

I think the end of the season will come about with a whimper.  Rick and the gang will pack up and leave and you'll have the gov come in and blow up most of the prison, last shot will be the gov and his men standing in the now empty prison with a sack of rage they can't get rid of, and the hyundai gang will be driving off down the road, off on a new adventure!  Maybe this time they'll take over....A MALL!

As passive-aggressive as you are about it, I think you might be onto something here.

However, now that we're down to the final episode, here are my predictions:

1. The Governor returns to Woodbury and gives the "they're animals, let's get 'em!" speech. Ben's dad leads the charge. Everyone in Woodbury grabs a gun and hits the road.

2. Milton finds Andrea and frees her and they escape the town, following the militia to the prison.

3. Rick's group waffles on staying or leaving until they finally decide to just go. As they're loading everyone into cars, the Governor's group attacks, and they scatter. Several improtant characters die.

4. Very important scene where the Governor shoots Beth and Lil' Asskicker in the back as they're running away.

5. Outrage. All out war. Rick takes Carl and they escape. More cast memebers die.

6. Sasha and her big sweet bear kill the Governor.

7. Rick, Carl, Darryl, Andrea, and Milton survive and move on.

I'm thinking the same thing.

The fact that there were no zombies, and no return fire tells me that something is up.

I anticipate that at some point, the alarm that was set off back by the one prisoner goes off again.  Sounding the dinner bell for every zombie in the area.

I agree with most but Milton will not have the force of arms to overcome the guard for the shack so he enlists Tyrese and Sasha to release Andrea (he knows Tyrese is new and a moral person and that Tyrese has heard Andrea saying this town is not right), setting up Tyrese and Sasha rejoining the group.  And Darryl is the one to kill the governor... there is no other way after the gov killed Merle.

I don't think anyone from the prison will die next week; it will mostly be the governor's people that are wiped out.  If any of the prison group bites it, I think it will be Beth.  She is basically a glorified extra, so losing her wouldn't interupt any storylines or upset any fans.

Milton dies trying to save Andrea.  The governor kills him.  Then, when the governor and his men storm the prison, Rick and the prison gang break into Woodbury and take over.  They find Andrea, free her, and she convinces the remaining townspeople that the governor is bad.  When the governor returns from the prison, he is locked out and the townspeople start firing on him.  Final shot is him becoming zombie food with one of Daryl's arrows in his skull.

Tyrese will be forced to go to the prison with the rest of the posse. There could be some kind of interesting dynamic between Sasha and Milton where they see the Governor torture Andrea before he leaves to raid the Prison. I'd love to see Andrea get scarred. I mean that in a purely nice way.

There's going to be mass confusion. Just like at the end of Season 2, the group is going to get whittled down and scattered further afield.

My over/under for killing the Gov is 50% Darryl, 30% Tyrese, 10% Andrea, 10% Sasha.

mac chaddy: What song was Merle listening to when he jumped out of the car?

Turn it Up by Ted Nugent...
Very, very awesome.
Especially when teh song kept playing well into the attack!
Motorhead, Ted Nugent, and Merle dying a hero's death...all in one episode!
Again. Awesome.
RIP, Merle.

Now That's What I Call a Taco!: I'm just going to put this in print before next week: I think the Prison crew are going to make a run for it.  When the Governor's crew come with their full on assault and blow up the guard tower, they aren't going to find anyone there.

This!
When you see the preview of Martinez taking out the guard tower with the grenade launcher...
That SHOULD alert you that there is NO WAY IN HELL Rick's group can fight off the Governor's group.

A) There's too damn many of them
B) They have military grade weapons; genade launcher and that big farking 50 cal. they showed last week.
C) They have women and children amongst their ranks. Rick is back to normal, moral, GOOD Rick. Good Rick will bug out rather than fire on women and children.

And that's that!
My guess...he's headed back home to see Morganeand introduce his group to him. Try to work out a living arrangement.

No other choice...can't live "on the road" with a one legged guy and a crying baby. They need something secure. Morgan has the whole town locked down...and, it seems, it's a place the Governor doesn't know about, hasn't been, or doesn't care about.

2013-03-25 11:54:26 AM

Mentat: Well, Merle was the only intelligent member of the group.

Yep, they are screwed now.

2013-03-25 12:20:36 PM

kumanoki: However, now that we're down to the final episode, here are my predictions:

Solid predictions

Until..

Saiga410: 7. Rick, Carl, Darryl, Andrea, and Milton survive and move on

Bolded man already found another show to work on. He wont survive the finale.

Big Beef Burrito: I feel like they were trying to make up for not showing Merle drving back to camp, jamming some Skynyrd, then unleashing  a van load of zombie justice in Season 1.

We got Motorhead and a g-ride. I'll take it.

I'm convinced the writers read FARK for our bold analysis and fantastic story lines.

2013-03-25 12:52:47 PM

kumanoki: You Are All Sheep: I think the end of the season will come about with a whimper.

He will die, but will save several in the process.

I actually think the person that will bring the demise of the governor is going to be Judith.  He will drop the gun just as he tried to take her lolly and she will somehow pull the trigger.

kumanoki: My over/under for killing the Gov is 50% Darryl, 30% Tyrese, 10% Andrea, 10% Sasha.

It will almost certainly be part of the main cast that takes out the Governor.  Andrea would probably match closest with the comic, if they wanted to go that way.  Darryl would also make a lot of sense considering this past episode.  I would also accept Rick, as a leader vs leader confrontation.  No way is it Tyreese or Sasha.  They're barely more than extras at this point.

I won't speculate on the ID of the Governor's killer, but I will guess that it would happen till at least halfway through Season 4, and if we're unlucky at the end of Season 4.

Which, frankly, will be a stupid choice. This storyline has more than run its course. I have a feeling that his desire to kill the Governor at the end of this season might be what led to Glen Mazzara being let go.

2013-03-25 01:47:27 PM
Maybe Morgan has a quick flashback that sets up the whole episode.

Or maybe the very end of the episode is Carl and Rick, bleeding and shell-shocked, stumbling back into their hometown and the last shot is of Morgan saying, "See? I done told you. Teeth or bullets."

RogermcAllen: Sunrazor: If Carl can be hit behind a deer, the Governor should have been hit, too.  Over-penetration and such.

While a bullet passing through a deer's chest may go through lungs, which would be mostly air, it looked to me like that kid got hit in the chest and splattered in the face from blood from the hit. The angle he was hit at the bullet could have been stopped by the scapula. Also, the weapon Merle was using looked like it was a .223, which is notorious for the bullet taking a wild trajectory in the body, not going straight through. I found it believable.

That's my guess as well. The preview shows the townfolk making their way all the way into the prison without a shot being fired from inside. To give up the opportunity to pick off some of them as they make their way in through that big open area is a big mistake IMO. That'd be IF they stayed. I'm thinking the smart move would be just to leave. The country is full of prisons, with Michonne with you they could clear one fairly safely. Staying is a losing proposition, even if they fend off the town people they are going to lose some of their own, AND still have the remainder of the townsfolk to contend with. Better to move on to some area where they can be in peace (except for the zombies of course).

If I were them I would booby trap the whole place with IED's and make a run for it. But I doubt realistically any of them know how to do that

I like the way you think, but I can't imagine the prison group has the fortitude to attack the unarmed pacifists left behind. Your plan would be the way to go though.

I've yet to sit in a drivers seat that was as good as that one, it was adjustable in every direction. I was moving out of state and ended up selling it for $700 (in '93), which was several hundred dollars more than I got it for. Probably worth a fortune now.

I really hope not.  Having the big battle this season would match up nicely with the big farm battle at the end of last season.  I also like the idea of each season being a full story arc.  We had the farm in season 2 (which was stretched longer than it needed), and we have the prison/Woodbury this year.  I'd be happy if they completely wrap up the Governor's story this year.  They could spend the first half of next year doing some of the on-the-road random encounters before moving on to the next safe haven.

I also hope they don't bother with Negan next season.  It would be way too soon.  There's plenty of material to adapt before getting to that point.  I also think it would be kind of lame to go directly from evil megalomaniac to evil megalomaniac in subsequent seasons.  There's plenty of "smaller" evils in the zombie apocalypse without every villain being a big boss.

I am going with Governor kills the baby (he was a baby killer in the comic) and this causes Tyreese and a few others to abandon the Gov and join Rick, a retreat to extend the fight to season 4, Carl gets the kill then

I'm thinking two main group deaths in the finale.  The baby should be a given.  Going on the road if the prison is destroyed, while caring for a baby, would not be good for the plot.  The other death I'm guessing will be either Beth or Carol, while holding the baby.  I don't think both will get it, but one of them probably will.  Beth would be the easiest since she's barely onscreen.  Carol would be the biggest hit to Daryl, who's already gone through killing zombie-Merle.

I suppose technically, Herschel should be fair game, but the group needs a voice of reason.  It sure as hell isn't Rick.  I also suspect Andrea is in for the long haul.  Hopefully they can fix her character in the off-season the same way they did for Carl before this season.

Tyrese and Sasha (provided she doesn't die) will become the voice of reason. Herschel is going to buy the farm (figuratively, this time). Andrea needs a scar. She needs a character tune-up. She could be redeemable if they badassed her up some. She had so much potential at the end of Season 2.

Maybe I had high hopes for the finale, but the loss of Merle undercut some of the potential I saw for it. But Merle=Shane, and we needed to wrap up that inconvenience before moving on to bigger and better stuff.

The twists and turns of this season have been fun but I need the payoff. The baby has to die. Andrea has to harden. Rick has to step back up. I need these characters to process what's happening to them and grow from it. We haven't seen a lot of that at all. Hell, they could make the attack on the prison the first five minutes and kill off everyone except Carl and Rick, in my opinion, but as long as they had the next forty minutes to grow from it, I'd be cool with that.

I agree to an extent. I can see Rick vascillating on whether or not to turn over Michonne if there's a chance- however small-for peace, but event to Rick it should be crystal clear that the Gov is not going to stop until everyone in the prison is dead. He's heard this from half his people. Darryl was going to do it because he's going to follow Rick because Rick's the leader. Herschel thought it was a terrible idea and told Rick so repeatedly.

What is frustrating is Rick hemming and hawing here down to the wire when the entire group should have been digging tranches and filling them with oil.

I had to go to DVR. The cross was dangling down but the ignition was empty. It looked too long to be a key chain and was wrapped around the turn signal/wiper switch. I can only guess it was a necklace or rosary and not a keychain.

My nitpick it that he tied Michonne up with the phone cord from Rick's crazy phone. Wouldn't a phone cord be much easier to chew through than a rope, which Merle was afraid of her doing? Granted, I have no personal experience attempting to chew through either...

Alfonso the Great: This episode seems very Merle-centric. I feel he's not much longer for this cruel world.

Are you a wizard?

Merle gets offed while eating his Manwich by Daryl.  But, something isn't right...the gov shot Merle and they cut away to commercial. Next time you see him, he's having a bit of lunch.

Last episode, I'm guessing they abandon the prison and move on. Won't be any big battle....they will simply leave. (didn't read any of the comics)

2013-03-26 12:18:50 PM
The only way I can see this ending is that the prison is destroyed, the Governor dies, and somehow Woodbury gets overrun by zombies.  If the Governor doesn't die, then he will chase Rick and his group throughout the entire series.  If he does die and the prison and Woodbury stays intact, then Rick and his group will probably move into Woodbury, which I doubt.  So to make the series progress to a different area, the Governor will die, and both the prison and Woodbury will have to cease to exist as a safe haven.

Don't go away mad buddy, just ...go away.

You have me at a disadvantage. You seem to know so much about me and all I know about you is this:

1. You follow me like a yapping dog from thread to thread.

2. A few years ago you did something I have only seen once in nearly a decade on Fark. You mined my profile for ammunition to hurl personal insults in a thread. Insults based on personal information being completely unrelated to the topic at hand.

So, due to his extra attention you have generously placed on me I will give one last try.

If you truly are a fan who only desires a meaningful conversation about The Walking Dead please watch the pertinent moments of the episode again. Ignore what you HEARD some talking head on a spin show say and really LOOK at the relationship between Daryl and his brother Merle. They are without exception the most fully fleshed out characters in the show so this should be easy for you. This time apply what you KNOW about the characters and their situation to what you SEE in the episode.

Think for a second what makes these two characters so different from the rest of the ensemble. What sorts of life-altering horrors have only these two people experienced?

Think about Merle and what his motivations have always been. Now think about his actions once he joined the prison group.

Think for a second what it meant when the film makers held the close up of Merle packing the telephone in his bug out bag. Think about what your ninth grade English teacher tried to instruct you on (big word alert) "foreshadowing". Take a moment out if your busy schedule annoying middle aged F-level show business types and think what that phone represents in the show. Here is some foreshadowing just for you: THE PHONE IS USED TO TALK TO DEAD PEOPLE.(Sorry, spoiler alert!)

What is it that Daryl asks his best friend pizza-boy to do for his brother? Hint: TO FORGIVE HIS BROTHERS SINS.

What CHOICE does Merle offer his brother when he calls himself "the devil". (Here is another hint. When two BROTHERS start talking about good vs. evil it's probably a better idea to pay attention rather than reach for the iPad and reveal more ignorance on the Internet)

What does Merle say to Ninja Chick as he leads her on an absurdly thin TELEPHONE wire to her SACRIFICE for the greater good of her people so they may bare fruit and multiply? Hint:its hidden deep in this nearly dialog you found incomprehensible: "If I do this everybody will be safe. If I pull this off maybe everything will be FORGIVEN."

Ask yourself what that book the old, white haired, one leggedfarmer was reading aloud. And what that passage means for a father who is a great man but helpless when it comes to his greatest responsibility: protecting his CHILDREN. (Does that sound familiar at all?)

What did Merle mean when driven nearly to tears by his own mind he says "I can't go back. Ever. Don't you understand?"

Words spoken AS art mean something. Words spoken ABOUT art don't mean shiat. Especially from the artist.

Just think for a second and stop trying to be smarter than me. It's never going to happen and you just look foolish for trying.

Think about the choice Merle had to make after witnessing his brother in the first place he could truly call a home. Where he saw his puny brother as the great protector of children that he and his father had always failed to be. How after a lifetime of guilt for abandoning his younger brother to un-imaginable horrors he could now see one, single act that could assure his brothers place in peace and relative safety for the rest of his life. By this one selfless act he could erase everything.

Think about the things Merle said. Think about what was going through his mind while he was driving Ninja Chick to her human SACRIFICE.Think about his change of tone after she failed to take several of his obvious attempts to get her to run.

Think about what redemption means to someone who has lived his entire life as an outlaw. A man who in the very episode in question lamented his killing of 16 men. "Since this started".

Words mean something. Those three words meant so much while you were obsessed with the density of zombie skulls.

Speaking of skulls, reach back into yours and find the little part of your brain that remembers what your ninth grade English teacher tried to hammer into you while you were busy mocking the smart kids. (They are the ones you see at work who always seem to take so long deciding if they want the large fries or not)

Ask why the first question to Merle in the episode was "do you ever ask yourself why you do the things you do?. Why does Merle describe the horrors that await Ninja Girl when she is SACRIFICED for the greater good of the group? And to the one guy he hates more than anyone on earth.

Ask yourself what does the word Sacrifice really mean in our culture? What did it mean for Merle to DIE for his BROTHERS LOVE. ( fark, spoiler alert again. Sorry! )

Think for a second what happened after Merle was killed. What went down after he was RAISED from the DEAD and confronted by his BROTHER.

So, if you are still reading this my one and only question for you is: what did Merle's brother do at that point? Was all you saw a guy just pushing a zombie away? Is that EVERYTHING you SAW through Cheeto stained eyeglass frames?

(Hint, count the number of TIMES Daryl pushes Zombie Merle away)

Is ANY of this starting to sound familiar at all?

Ask yourself why the most selfish and self-centered character of them all would steal a car, get drunk, wryly salute his adversary and drive straight into a shiatload of both zombies and heavily armed men. All the while while listening to an album called THE ACE OF SPADES.

THE ACE OF SPADES. (that's not a typo, it's a hint as gigantic as the pencil lodged in your neck)

Only to be worse than killed by the only adult male authority figure he has ever respected. A father figure that also abandoned him and his brother and forced them back into lives of sin. Alone.

While I know the show is an absolutely appalling waste of resources I have never forgotten that the people putting it together are mostly very talented. And that's why the failure that is Walking Dead is so disappointing.

Think about all that before making a sophomoric comment. Because like Merle you have a choice to make. You can either continue to hurl childish insults (most people already realize you are an idiot so no real fear of reprisal. And the core group will always think you are awesome because they are idiots as well.)

Or you can have a real discussion about the show you claim to love and understand so well.

The last is probably your best option and I strongly suggest you take it. Just pretend you never came back to this thread. And I promise to pretend you never saw this post. That way we can mutually agree to ignore each other.

I enjoy Fark because ignorant people don't last long here. But some idiots are more determined than others.

Before I go I leave you with one last hint.

He took the phone because he used the telephone wire to bind Michonne, and he used parts of the phone as part of the binding.

He was cannibalizing the phone's parts after he told Rick they'd need wire to bind her so she couldn't escape. Rick was looking for wire, too. Merle found some. On the phone.

I think you're assigning too much meaning to the phone. Yes, Rick had an hallucination that involved the phone, but Merle didn't know that. Maybe we know that, and you're trying to say that at some deep level the writers are trying to inject some deep meaning to the phone for us, the viewers, but sometimes a phone is just a phone. I think in this case, the focus on the phone was to show us where Merle got the wire to bind Michonne.

Also, not everything is allegory. Sometimes, people who think they're smart just try too hard to see allegory where the writer intended none.

I've had people point out "obvious" symbolism in my writing, and sometimes my answer to that is, "If it's so obvious, why didn't I think of that while I was writing it?"

You strike me as the kind of guy who sees someone get a pie in the face, and then tells everyone else it had a deeper meaning that referenced Kierkegaard, the Bible, and the greater concerns of the lower classes during the fall of Rome... And then the writer turns to you and says, "No. It was just pie."

ZeroCorpse: Also, not everything is allegory. Sometimes, people who think they're smart just try too hard to see allegory where the writer intended none.

Here is the definition of Allegory:

Allegory is a device in which characters or events in a story, poem, or picture represent or symbolize ideas and concepts.

The telephone represented a method to communicate with dead people (either real or imagined) in episode 5 of this season and thereafter. It was a fairly important plot point. You are suggesting a few episodes later the same writers that crafted that particularly unusual device (which confounded their viewers for weeks) wrote in Merle's business with the phone (and the long shot of it going into the bag) just because the now meaningless prop happened to have a wire sticking out of it?

Anyway, the definition continues:

Allegory has been used widely throughout the history of art, and in all forms of artwork. A reason for this is that allegory has an immense power of illustrating complex ideas and concepts in a digestible, concrete way.

Apparently not.

ZeroCorpse:
I've had people point out "obvious" symbolism in my writing, and sometimes my answer to that is, "If it's so obvious, why didn't I think of that while I was writing it?"

Your statement was self explanatory. I'm sure after making it your critics understood your approach to writing just fine.

I don't think I like a single character on this show now besides Darryl. Merle was interesting and necessary at least his character had some sort of depth. All the other characters on this show are disappointing. The Governor could have been such a bad ass character - especially listening to my friends talk about him in the comics but he is a giant let down. He's like Wesker in the damn RE games he never dies. Glenn has got to be the most annoying character I've ever seen on television and I couldn't give two shiats about his love affair w/ Maggie. Really dude? In the middle of the zombie apocalypse you're worried about getting MARRIED? FOH. Michonne is also another character that could be bad ass but they under utilize her as well. Go back and rewatch the first few episodes of the show and compare them to the latest. WEAK.

The painting is The Denial of Saint Peter by Caravaggio. I picked it at random. Just like the creatives on the show.

Daryl pushes away Zombie Merle three times then busts into tears.

The Walking Dead has numerous Biblical pretensions (which is a good and expected thing) but plays way too fast and loose with the imagery.  The writers don't seem to have any real throughline and just leap around the old and new testament desperately  cramming in anything that seems to fit. Most of the time it dosent and comes across as self indulgent. Well, I don't think a show about zombies CAN be considered self indulgent. Lest just say scattered and confused. Which is a shame.

There is certainly one thing around these parts that is self-indulgent.

Grab that mirror that it always within arm's reach and look for some symbolism.

I honestly enjoy most of your other posts. But you have always been a turd in the punchbowl for these threads. I have to wonder why you watch and want to ascribe bizarre meaning when you aren't just trashing everything anyway. Your theory  only has the number 3 in common. Which is the magic number in fighting, drama and comedy. You just seem pretentious with your Bible allegory, As if religion has only realized that three is the magic number...  Yeah deny Jesus three times, but doing anything 3 times in a row in a drama (once fleetingly, once knowing you must, and one last time getting rid of your old ways......it's a Hollywood staple)... I dunno. I'm a bit drunk right now. See you for the finale. Honestly, if all you can do is complain about the show, just stop watching man!

By the way, if you add the times Daryl pushed Merle (including when he pushed him down) it was four times. But do not let that little piece of info destroy your college-level allegory. Seriously, Bible allegories in a show about zombies? What's next, somebody will point out that "The Walking Dead" title does not refer to the zombies, but to the living? Maybe Rick could yell that at the end of this season. End sarcasm.

MagSeven: T.M.S.: born_yesterday: T.M.S.: Before I go I leave you with one last hint. I'm not familiar with that painting or its subject matter.  Also haven't read the bible.  What biblical story are you drawing parallels to?

Don't forget...saying Beetlejuice's name 3 times.
