Geeze - this is only about the 300th greenlit "list of all 11 Doctors" link I've seen on Fark since Matt Smith took the role.  This may be a 'new' link, but it's certainly worthy of the 'Repeat' tag, IMHO.

Big publicity push this week. The LA Times has it as a cover story on their Calendar section. The local news stand has a few magazines with Matt Smith on the cover. Hopefully this will not lead to a change in the show to appeal to an American middle of the road demographic.

Him stalking both Amy and Clara (as seen here) as children have done a better job of repelling this American rather than appealing.  *shiver*.  We need to bring on Doctor #12 before the Tardis becomes the Gallifreyian equivalent of a nondescript van with tinted windows.

People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually - from a non-pedo, non-rapey viewpoint - it's more like a big ball of touchy-feely... of agey-rapey... stuff.

Given that Amy was 20-something and the Doctor is now 1200 years old, it's rather like an adult lusting after a zygote, inn't?

FTFA:

Hammer horror legend Peter Cushing filled Hartnell's shoes in two big screen Time Lord adventures: 1965'sDr. Who and the DaleksandDaleks-Invasion Earth: 2150 A.D., although, unlike Paul McGann's TV movie Eighth Doctor, Cushing's appearances are not regarded as ''canonical.''

Nope.  Just someone a little older and a little wiser than you, offering some wisdom.  The fact that you don't see that for what it is, and thought I was attacking you is how I know you're younger and slightly dumber than I am.

You want a personal attack?  Here goes: it's clear from your posts in Doctor Who threads (and you post in all of them) that you don't like Tenant or Smith.  That's all well and goos, as you're entitled to your opinion, but your attempts in these threads to convince Doctor Who fans who do like the new show that you're right and they're wrong is an idiotic waste of time on your part.  It's like trying to teach a pig to sing.

There are lots of things in this world I don't like.  I don't care for professional sports, but I don't spend all my free time in the Sports tab trying to convince people who like baseball that it's the least interesting waste of time ever conceived by man.  You know what I do?  I stay out of the Sports tab.

Don't like Doctor Who?  Don't watch it.  Stop posting about it.  Forget about it and find something better to do with your time.  It will make you a happier person.  I speak from personal experience in this.

Agreed on all counts except the last, amigo. Of all the Classic Doctors, Baker was certainly the wittiest and most engaging and deserved every bit of that adulation. Pertwee's a distant second.

Until he convinced her to go for Rory (granted, his long absences helped in this matter), Amy was obsessed with the Doctor due to the early imprinting.  It is obvious by her overt flirtations in the Snowmen episode that Clara is equally into him and the meeting of her early in life in the St. John's prequel (wibbly-wobbly as Asylum takes place AFTER Snowmen, St. John's, etc., in her personal timeline) could be part of that imprinting.

It just strikes me as 'grooming', whether the Doctor does it intentionally or not.

Eh, while I was a lifeguard at age 19 there were a few 8 year old girls who had crushes on me.  Not something I encouraged or could help, it just happened.  So I suppose that fits with your unintentional comment.  But no one can control how another sentient being reacts to anything.

I agree that the companion swooning over the Doctor thing is getting old, but hell if I met a time traveling alien with a TARDIS and it looked like an attractive female human I'd go for it.

Perfect example of the American obsession with sex.  Y'all see it everywhere, even in perfectly innocent things.  It involves a child and a grown up -- SEX PREDATOR!

To the Doctor everyone is a child.  He's 900 years old.  When Vastra asks him when Melody might have been conceived he goes all "argh don't make me think about the kids having sex".

Women are into him because he's an intelligent, powerful and mysterious being with a time-travelling spaceship.  He gives them the most thrilling time of their lives and makes them feel important.  It would be a surprise if women didn't fall in love with him.

Amy was obsessed with him as a child because she had a lonely, crap life she was unhappy about, and he was her promise of a better life.  Other unhappy kids have to make someone up, she had a visual to hang her escape fantasies on.  That you see even unintentional grooming in that only reveals a problem with you and your society, not with the show.

I'd tend to suggest watching something like "Blink" first, and then go back to the Eccleston era, as his first episode is pretty bad (I actually gave up on the show after "Rose" aired, and only came back to it a year later).  It doesn't really get going until "The End of the World."

He gives them the mo ...

Rational American here, the vast majority of us don't think just like this.  But these days the possibility gets pointed out a lot and instead of saying "Wait, why the hell would you even think that?" we pretty much just say "Well yeah, I guess that could happen."

With a whimper, not a bang.

Fark's adoration of this terrible franchise is simultaneously sad and misguided.

Peter Davison was the last Dr, and Tom Baker was the last good Dr. Anything newer is unrepentant shiat. QED.

Dwight_Yeast: Hollie Maea: I haven't ever watched any Dr Who.  Where should I start?

I'd tend to suggest watching something like "Blink" first, and then go back to the Eccleston era, as his first episode is pretty bad (I actually gave up on the show after "Rose" aired, and only came back to it a year later).  It doesn't really get going until "The End of the World."

I would say start with the 11th Doctor, "The 11th Hour". You don't need that much back story other than the Doctor is someone who is nearly immortal and has a time machine that is shaped like a police box.  From there the rest of the episodes ease you into it. From there you can go back and watch from the 9th Doctor.

I started watching Dr. Who on Netflix two months ago. I'm almost through the last episodes of the 10th Doctor. I have thoroughly enjoyed the series so far. I got into it because after seeing all of these threads on Fark, I figured I should give it a chance so I could know what everyone is talking about. So, thank you people of Fark! On a side note, I was sad when the 9th one died because I didn't want to grow into a new actor in the role. I'll be even sadder when this one goes, because I've just loved David Tennant. And I'm excited to see how different, yet familiar the 11th will be! And by the way, every episode with the Daleks is a great episode.

Really? Must be on my ignore list. It would be funner were I actually trolling.

What I've seen of the new DR WHO's are about on par with every Lost episode, ever. Yeah, fancier special effects/boobs, but I'd never watch Dr Who for any of that.

I favor my sci-fi the way I favor my whiskey: hard and devoid of cruft. Guess I'll stick with books, and single-malts.

if_i_really_have_to: Premeditated_Road_Rage: Zarquon's Flat Tire: Premeditated_Road_Rage: floor: Premeditated_Road_Rage: Geeze - this is only about the 300th greenlit "list of all 11 Doctors" link I've seen on Fark since Matt Smith took the role.

Sorry for 'reading into it' like that, but I do live in a time and place where teacher, preachers, and priests can't keep it in their pants and kiddy diddlers abound on both the street and net.  The whole concept creeps me out to begin with but watching the Doctor do it even moreso.

Like any new series/reboot you kind of have to commit to push through the first few episodes so things can shake out.  I didn't care that much for Eccleston  but he grew on me (Disclaimer: My first doctor was Tom Baker and "you never forget your first Doctor").

The series itself is an eclectic fusion of the absurd and the poignant. The soundtrack is very good and gets better over time.
That said, it's not for everyone but hanging in there until you get to David Tenant is worth it.

A fundamental problem with the genre.  In fact, with most niche genres, from fantasy to queer lit to (and this is where it gets really bad) queer fantasy/sci fi.

They could always skip around a bit in the first season.

Rose, Dalek, the one with Rose's father, then the two parter.

Of course, missing out on the Slitheen means missing out on Harriet Jones, Back Bencher.

There's plenty of good sci-fi out there if you know where to look. Iain M Banks, Alastair Reynolds, Charles Stross, John Scalzi, Vernor Vinge, Robert J Sawyer, Robert Charles Wilson, just to name a few off the top of my head.
