They even admit that it is a symbolic gesture, not one that actually does anything. I sympathize with their goals but nonsense like this is counter-productive I think. Empty gestures and idiotic "raising awareness" don't help your cause.

And what is the message here anyway? Civilization is inherently harmful? Energy consumption is going nowhere but up and asking people pretty please to cut back isn't going to change that. What they should be doing is encouraging development of cleaner energy.

Meanwhile, power traders made a fortune given the easiest arb grid trade in the world, as gas and coal burning power plants briefly shut in production then resumed.

The Metro newspapers (the free rag that is all over subway/bus/train stations) here in Sweden put out an saturday edition about earth hour which they don't ever do. So they wasted tens thousands of pounds of paper, energy, gasoline and so on to tell us how to save energy.

I was tempted to turn on the AC just to offset othher people.

Once you realize that these types of people are concerned *only* with feeling good about themselves, it makes perfect sense.

If Russia, China, France and the USA are all participating with their biggest landmarks... who exactly are they making aware? Is there a secret government that rules all those countries who doesn't know about the global warming scam yet?

If global warming were real, this would make it worse. The fact that they're willing to do events like this proves that they don't even believe the crap they're spouting off to people. Let me know when Al Gore starts using a bike instead of a private jet and a 20 hummer convoy.

I don't find it ironic at all.

Earth Hour just makes people cynical about cleaning up the environment.

I'm as pro-environment as you'll get. Heck, I'm studying it right now for a career (hopefully). But every time I go around saying this during Earth Hour, people look at me like I'm a villain straight out of Captain Planet. No one wants to think they're contributing to the destruction of the Earth, but that's what happens every day you and everyone else around you don't attempt to do anything that's actually going to change things long term.

These events are about a social conditioning. It's about getting us conditioned to artificial scarcities and poverty.

The real solution is to break the energy cartels by allowing free and open competition. The result will be cleaner and more plentiful energy plus devices that use less. Competition means better and cheaper year over year. It also means over turning who's on top if the older established companies cannot innovate. Hence they turn to politics to prevent competition. This empowers governments.

Non-competitive systems make the most money with very high prices and very low production. By removing competition they can charge whatever they want  while adding capacity and innovating creates costs. Costs that cut into their bottom line, so they don't do it. They actually try to do the opposite, cut capacity. The result is scarcity and expense for those who need the product.

The problem however are all these people who have grown accustomed to the fruits of a competitive economic environment. So something must be done to get them to grow accustomed to and accept a new way of living. A collectivist way of life where those on top of the collective ration things.  This earth hour ceremony is key in the social manipulation required to get there.

Thus we have this facet of the global warming scam and why governments go along with it.

I am not really an environmentalist but plan to go along with the lights out hour since it sounds fun.  The family and I are going to use it as an hour to just chill out.  We will get a fire going in the fireplace, maybe one in the outside firepit too, and enjoy the more subdued lighting from the flicker of flames.

/ I'll have more lights on then North Korea very quickly

While that does sound fun, it completely defeats the purpose of Earth Hour. Burning wood produces more CO2 emissions and pollution than the power it takes to make the electricity which runs the lights. It is counterproductive if you are trying to adhere to the ideals being put forward, but if you are just looking for a good excuse to have a fire with the family, enjoy.

But do not wait till earth hour, just do it cause it is an awesome thing to do with the fam.
