From what I've seen on Fark, it seems like watching MLP is like smoking cigars... if not for the minor ego boost they seem to get from telling other people about it, most adults wouldn't bother doing it at all.

That's the really unique thing about Internet culture: it doesn't necessarily matter whether we are sincere or not for an event like this to become a big deal. Everyone is anonymous, everyone at least feels like there will be no real life blowback for the things they say, what does it matter if you say you are going to marry a cartoon character?

People who do this are to be made fun of, I mean those marrying fiction characters or objects. I don't care if it's Twilight Sparkle, a pillow, a video game character, or any of these weird things on this list you've got a problem. As a brony myself I love the characters, but they're characters...on a TV show. Now maybe if a real person adopts the personality of the character and you marry them, that's a little less weird, but still...come on guy. Personally I don't support shipping or R34 with ponies, it's the internet, I know it's out there just for that reason alone, but I don't endorse it or engage with it.

I believe a lot of it is trolling. While some of it is similar to the folks to dress up as Klingon, etc., a lot of it is a corollary of Poe's law.

Basically, once the idea that there are crazy fans is out there, any characteristics that can be assigned to those crazy fans don't register as completely unbelievable, so it's easy to make up more believable crazy about it. As a result, blogger trolls fishing for hits get tossed in the hopper with the fragment of legitimate crazy, leading to a surplus of counterfeit crazy.

As a result, blogger trolls fishing for hits get tossed in the hopper with the fragment of legitimate crazy, leading to a surplus of counterfeit crazy.

It's not crazy. "Crazy" is interesting. This is just kind of sad.

HO usually runs about on par with N, though anything smaller could prove a bit more costly. I find that buildings and a few other accessories are actually a bit cheaper with N. In any case, N allows for more stuff in a smaller space, so ultimately it's up to you.

You know, it's like this. There's a lot of things across history that have been socially unacceptable on a large scale. The only thing the Internet's down is 'rip down' the veil of so-called society to reveal what's really going on behind the scenes. Despite what people would have you believe, fetishes associated with things like this have been going on for as long as Ug and Thung found a rock shaped like a woman's hooha and hid it from the rest of the tribe.

Whether the lack of that veil is good or bad is essentially irrelevant now, because it is gone, and the only way it'll ever come back is if censorship in all its nasty glory reigns supreme (yeahhh...)

Having said that - There is absolutely nothing wrong with enjoying a show that was intended for a different audience or target market. Hell, there's nothing wrong with getting collectibles or books or other swag that demonstrates your like of said show. I'd even encourage you to hang out with other people that share the same interest as you, because it's fun to share emotional highs with other people (amazing!)

There is a serious problem with that interest blossoming into a full-blown obsession, where you do nothing but live, eat, drink, sleep that idea. And making real life decisions that demonstrate how obsessed you are to the point where you do stuff that the rest of think is crazy batshiat insane. Marrying a cartoon pony, or attempting to, is crazy batshiat insane, and you -do- need professional help.

As far as trolls go... yeah, you guys been around longer than the non-trolls. When Urg found out what Ug and Thung were doing with the rock and harassed 'em non-stop for it by beating them upside the head with a club. All the internet's done is rename 'bully' to 'troll'.

Oh, and if you don't like the show? You're missing out, but I'm not going to say you have to OMGDROPEVERYTHINGGOWATCHRAINBOWDASHSHE'SSOCUTEOMGIWANTOMAKEHERMYWAIFU.  There's probably shows you like I don't. I'm cool with that too. Hating on someone for liking something you don't understand, though... welcome to kindergarten.

This. (Although speaking as a fan, I don't think it was ever cool to declare it. Some of us just don't give a fark. It turned out there were more of us who didn't give a fark than we possibly imagined.)

Holy Banana: You know, it's like this. There's a lot of things across history that have been socially unacceptable on a large scale. And this.

R34: If it exists, there is porn of it. No exceptions.
R35: If porn does not exist of it, porn will be made of it.

By R34/R35 the probability of there being R34 of it is 1.0 for every subgroup, but R34 by itself doesn't say anything about the quantity produced. Quantity of R34 material appears directly proportional to size of fanbase, and in the case of MLP, it's a large fanbase. Difficulty of producing fan-generated content (R34 or not) is inversely proportional to the difficulty of producing something that resembles the original assets, and MLP is a 2D vectorized cartoon. If you're looking for some DaVinci x Michaelangelo, you're probably going to find more TMNT than hand-painted reproductions of the Mona Lisa helping Adam plaster the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel while God watches in bemusement.

Holy Banana:

But also this. There's a line between snark, joking, trolling, R34 for the sake of R35, a genuine fetish, and... and wherever this guy's coming from, which is so far past that line that he couldn't see the line with VLBI. But it's a big internet, and if we've learned nothing else from it, it's that nothing on it should surprise anyone.

This still does not rival a guy in Europe (Germany I think), getting charged with rape because his character raped a female character in the game Second Life.  I do believe the charges were dropped once the presiding judge finally stopped laughing.  Hell, in Japan they marry female mannequins which... wait a minute, every mannequin I've seen naked from the waste downm both male and female, look the same.  It makes me wonder... How do they make baby mannequins.

My wife and I both enjoy it, despite not being the target audience. We also just finished Regular Show. My days as an early 20's pot smoking slacker are over, so I'm probably not the target audience for that show either. We're about to start Adventure Time.
Good TV is good TV. I'm not going to dress up like a pony and go to a con, but it's an enjoyable show that we liked to watch just before heading off to bad. Sort of a palette cleanser after stuff like Breaking Bad or Parenthood. Something light an airy after a heavy meal.
I often go outside my target demographic.
I'm not a teenage lesbian but I love Tegan and Sara and even paid extra for a meet and greet and photo. My wife and I were the only married heterosexuals in that line.

Jesus Christ.

Seriously, some people take it too farking far. I am totally a fan of MLP, but I can't stand a good half of the jackasses who also like the show. Especially the ones who don't like the show and just hang around the fandom. But it's people like TFA that make me wish I'd never been entranced by these pastel horses.

Twilight Farkle: MLP is a 2D vectorized cartoon

Yeah. It's pretty easy to make something that looks like the show. even I can do it.

I think it's due to the somewhat shared persecution complex the fandom has, that we're a bit more tolerant of deviant behavior, as a whole, than say, Alabama. That could also be due to the fact most of the fandom is under 21 and internet savvy. Whatever the cause, it seems a lot of crazies feel like they can glom themselves onto bronies and be accepted. As someone who has spent a lot of time writing and drawing fan stuff for this show, as someone who is probably in "too deep", let me just say, this is farked up and creepy.

Also, Kev is a pretty cool guy. It's hilarious he got this mail though. I mean, he's far more likely to draw rule 63 (Dusk Shine) than actual Twilight.

(Naw, you're not too far gone. Keep doing what you're doing, your work made my morning coffee much more pleasant.)

25.media.tumblr.com

Now that I've had my morning coffee... Well, rule 63 was established as part of show canon at the end of Season 3, Episode 5, "Magic Duel." (Poor Applejack!), so he's got that going for him... In context, I thought the pony-in-real-life photoshopping was hilarious - Lyra, put down the axe, that's Pinkie's job - although it makes it much easier for everyone else to take things out of context.

If half the fanbase's experience with real life has only been high school and college, it may explains part of how its awkwardness is self-inflicted. When a hive mind attempts to run at the speed of the Internet, it tends to overreact in unpredictable ways. When what's at stake in the rest of one's life is comparatively small, everything, including (and perhaps especially) petty differences of opinion over a shared hobby tend to get blown up into Rarityesque meltdowns that asymptotically approach "the show is ruined!" within hours, far too fast for wiser and more moderating influences to take effect.

i.imgur.com

When TNG came out and Picard didn't immediately resort to "fark the aliens or blow them up", there were trekkers who said Star Trek(:TOS) was ruined. When DS9 got the idea from B5 to start using story arcs instead of the episodic format, there were trekkers said ST:TNG was ruined. When Voyag... OK, by that point, this analogy is breaking down horribly, but the first two count!

And adulthood. It was the Benny Hill reference (a chase to a tune with a more-than-suspicious resemblance to Yakety Sax) in the third episode that kept me going.

Quite personally, one of the things that keeps me in the fandom, albeit far, far away from people like the TFA describes, is the artwork.

Funny how people are only just now distancing themselves from the creepy part of the fandom.

If you own figurines or wear pony clothes, you're definitely on the creep event horizon.

Oh really?

Funny enough, my boss has never raised an issue with wearing a pony shirt. Or an adventure time shirt. Or really any shirt I wear at work.

Even funnier, my patients seem to love it. Of course, I work in a Children's Hospital, so YMMV.

To really point the flaw out in your logic, you're basically saying anyone who owns anything cartoonish is a "creep". So anyone who owns anything with any Disney character on it, any Pixar Character, any Family Guy or Futurama...etc.

I really doubt the quality that would make someone a creep is the choice of Mickey Mouse scrubs.

Remember "Bronymedic" would always go apeshiat in these threads and defend how cool he was, prattling on about studly guns and his paramedic escapades?

Haven't seen him in a while--maybe he finally got a clue and changed his handle.

Everyone appreciates the occasional joke in a kid's show, but pretending it's normal to get all wide-eyed and sport chubbies about pastel-colored little-girl ponies is creepy.  Definitely the first steps towards cruising the used car ads for low-mileage white panel vans.

I love him. I still see him around totalfark from time to time.

Yep the MLP jokes are fantastic. I do not know really anybody in the community who actively gets an erection from watching the show. They tend to get more giddy and bouncy then sexually simulated. And when you talked about the vans I honestly thought of the popemobile.

However (at the risk of posting another MLP picture, which is happening), fans like myself do tend to get "wide-eyed" specifically because of all the weapons-grade cute that's put out. I mean seriously, this was just posted this morning (and what a great crossover at that):

My point has just been proven.  Running away from the Brony handle because too many of the fans went full retard is finally recognizing what everyone has been saying.  Welcome back to reality.

And there's nothing Freudian--it's just fun to play on people's fears about what they think others think.

I guess you just made an ass out of yourself. In reality, I've been pointing and laughing at the fandom for some time. This letter was comedy gold considering the artist in question proudly and publically has been doing NSFW art long before he did Twilight.

I can enjoy something, and then take comedic schadenfreude from people who seem to be obsessed with it to the point they let it rule their life, you know. Kind of like how many people enjoy Star Trek, yet never manage to go Full Klingon.

You never go full Klingon.

I "ran away" from that login because I got tired of being engaged in Non Sequitors and accusations of trolling in the politics tab whenever I would make a thread calling out some right winged nutcase.

Speaking of, I see your account was created 04/2012. Get off my damn lawn.

fickenchucker: And there's nothing Freudian--it's just fun to play on people's fears about what they think others think.

How is it about "my fear" to point out that it's rather creepy that your thoughts automatically turn to making something sexual or a fetish? Quite frankly, nothing you say or think about me, or anyone else on this board, affects my life in any possible way, shape, or form. You're pretty much irrelevant.

Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar, but I think the deeper issue than anyone's choice of saturday morning entertainment is your absolutely convinced that anyone who likes something that doesn't fit with their age or gender norms means it's a fetish for them.

Twilight Farkle:
If half the fanbase's experience with real life has only been high school and college, it may explains part of how its awkwardness is self-inflicted. When a hive mind attempts to run at the speed of the Internet, it tends to overreact in unpredictable ways. When what's at stake in the rest of one's life is comparatively small, everything, including (and perhaps especially) petty differences of opinion over a shared hobby tend to get blown up into Rarityesque meltdowns that asymptotically approach "the show is ruined!" within hours, far too fast for wiser and more moderating influences to take effect.

Yeah. I totally think that the age of the fandom plays a huge part in the massive amount of insecurity a lot of them display. The ones who live and breathe social media seem to require that every single person they interact with get as obsessed as them. I post pony pics on fark because I love seeing people flip out, not because I need validation.
