I pretty much quit watching TWC. BS shows, too many commercials and AL ROKER

2013-03-24 08:16:43 AM
Technically, "Today's weather: One giant hailstone the size of Madagascar, traveling at 74,000 miles per hour" *is* a forecast.

2013-03-24 08:34:09 AM
Kind of sad that TWC is going the way of MTV.

2013-03-24 08:34:26 AM
After reading the article, "is a rogue planet going to destroy all life on Earth? Scientists say no, but our producers say maybe."

One more step to Idiocracy.  "Next up on The Weather Channel, OW My Balls"

Well put subby. I'm old to enough to remember when the TWC coming along was a big, welcome deal much like MTV and music videos. Apparently people don't care about the weather anymore and don't like music videos either.

2013-03-24 08:40:39 AM
I dunno. Pretty sure they could do it with this or similar graphic:

Odd, all of the busywork they've given their talking heads hasn't really detracted at all from the "Local on the 8s" I get.

The storm names are stupid, however.

edmo: Apparently people don't care about the weather anymore

I think people do want to know the weather and Local on the 8's is great.  The producers at TWC just don't know how to fill in the nine minutes between the Local on the 8's.

Not sure what the purpose of the Weather Channel is anymore now that there's the internet and smartphones.

Maybe they could branch into politics:

when they do give the weather, I've found accuracy is an issue.

Stop the bombastic specials, the naming of low pressure systems and get back to your original misson statement

2013-03-24 08:44:26 AM
To be fair, I can't blame The Weather Channel for going the MTV/SyFy/History Channel route, as long as it stays with shows about storm chasers, natural disasters, and things like that.  Keeping their old format of elevator music accompanying a rotating weather scroll was really only going to appeal to old folks who still think their solar powered calculator is a technological marvel.  Everyone else has instant access to even more in depth information via the internet and smartphone apps.  It's a losing proposition.

But keep it about weather, for Pete's sake.  Start talking this idiotic stuff, you're only a step away from asking if Nostradamus got alien assistance in predicting hurricanes (you know, to barely keep the barely tangable link to weather).

Anyone who says "on the 8s" can just Fark right off. Also, news people, stop saying "some" when you mean about or approximately.

Cry more, subby. If you want to know the local weather forecast, every smartphone on the market has an app for that, and you don't have to wait 10 minutes!

Things like TV stations, FM radio, etc will never really go away. I know cool internet people always represent exactly what the general public are into, but AM radio isn't even dead yet. And it was outdated in the 60's. Things take a long long time to change.
You could say the same thing about newscasts on TV channels. All the "first at 11" in the world won't replace the spread of news through social media, or email alerts, etc. But yet, they still exist everywhere, despite you thinking that they're retarded. There's an audience for content delivered in an interesting way, and in a way that the user hadn't thought of before. That's why these news shows are now calling themselves "investigation teams" and what not. That's why FM is moving to talk formats.

For the weather network though, instead of doubling down on competency and hiring well-educated meteorologists, scientists, etc. They are indeed going the MTV route, which will probably lead to lower and lower viewership, and there'll be boardroom meetings with out-of-touch directors wondering why, and the young or smart people to afraid to rock the boat to speak up and tell them.

Yeah like the Hitler channel is, like the History channel with farked up reality crap like pawnshops, National Geo with even more bullshiate programming, a Syfy channel with "reality" ghost stories.

42 minutes worth of a "one hour" show - the rest is commercials, then if you want to surf away, they know you are so they sequence the commercials at the same time on most channels.

What is this doing to our attention spans?

I get more from a goddam iPad than I do from farked up the television.

/yeah I'm mad bro'

....and another thing. Some channels run science programming from 4, 8, 10 years ago that I KNOW the science is incorrect, and new science has rejected or matured. How do learn anything when it's the wrong stuff?

My guess is no one with a smart phone watches the TWC anymore (I know I don't). And with smart phone uptake only increasing, TWC sees the writing on the wall and is trying to stay relevant.

If they want to stay relevant, then they need to have Stephanie Abrams do all of her work in a bikini.  Or dominatrix outfit.

Coincidentally, I just saw a commercial for a new show on TWC: Prospectors. Wtf does that have to do with the weather?

Not saying they have to stick with the smooth jazz format, but sheesh, at least stay a bit true to your name.

TWC Classics is a good site for what things used to be. You want more people talking about the way things used to be, check out their forums

Of course, even the Local Forecast music evolves from classic stuff like this to stuff you heard on the radio 15 years ago.... that means a "yo dawg we'll give you some voices from the music to go with the voices of the narrator on your local forecast" type of situation.

When exactly were HBO and Showtime "nothing but movies"? HBO has had sports since day one (boxing, ABA basketball, Inside the NFL). They have also had kids show (Emmett Otter, Braingames, Fraggle Rock...). They both had original shows (Not Necessarily the News, Brothers, The Paper Chase), not to mention all the concerts.

They don't even do that anymore. Here's a sample of what they played this month from the TWC Classics forum:

Ryan Farish - Pages of Love
Foster the People - I Would Do Anything for You
Jason Aldean - No
Taylor Swift - Starlight
Bryan Carrigan - Red Moon
Rihanna - Music of the Sun
Derek and the Dominoes - Layla
Sublime - What I Got
Death Cab for Cutie - I Will Possess Your Heart

Even the LF is a former decaying shell of it's awesome past. If I wanted to hear this stuff I'd turn on the radio

I first heard about the attacks on the World Trade Center from The Weather Channel. I just got off work and sat down to see what the weather was going to do for my just started weekend and the guy who was talking about flight delays said "There are no domestic flights because of the problems in New York" and I tell you, that got my attention right farkin' now and I switched over to CNN.

that's my Weather Channel story.

/was listening to a CD on my way home so I did not have the radio on to hear any breaking news.

When I was a kid I didn't have cable. Every once in a while I'd stay a couple nights at my sister's house. She and her husband had all the premium channels and the only things I ever saw listed for HBO and Showtime were movies. When my dad finally got cable while I was in high school I could only see those channels during the free previews. That's when I noticed a lot of other programs on them.

2013-03-24 09:49:27 AM
Well, to be fair, TWC's raison d'etre kind of went away with the advent of the internet.  And smartphones were just the final nails in the proverbial coffin.

2013-03-24 09:50:56 AM
TWC has been killing me for almost ten years with this crap I think. There's still a niche for them to cover large scale weather events in the days before and provide live coverage (hurricanes, blizzards, floods, severe storms, and the like). They still provide occasionally decent coverage of those events, but it's just impossible to watch most of the year. Most folks aren't going to go digging around on the real good weather sites but just use weather.com and augment it with the tv channel, so there's definitely a public service they can provide.

... which brings me to the next point. Considering that weather information has obviously gone full-internet.... why does weather.com suck so bad? It's just littered with ads (yes, I use adblock) and the main page story is something bizarre like today's actual headline: "Destination: The REAL Alcatraz". They bought Wunderground last year. Please don't screw it up too.

2013-03-24 09:51:33 AM
Why do we even still have television?  Shouldn't the networks be beaming programming directly into our brains by now?

2013-03-24 09:55:23 AM
About a month ago, they predicted a winter storm dropping 10 inches of snow here, and shut down the entire DC area.  Not a single flake fell.  We hardly got any rain.

Right now, TWC is advertising 2-4 inches of snow for tonight (with a high/low of 47/32), and 6-8 additional tomorrow, with a high of 33.

It's been in the 40s-50s during the day now for weeks.

I'm getting farking tired of their apocalyptic, worst-case forecasts to boost their ratings.  While I'd love for a conference I have to attend tomorrow to be cancelled, I doubt I'll see even an inch of accumulation and predict light rain instead.

Maybe if they worried less about branding and stupid shows and more about accurate forecasting, people would give a crap to watch.

2013-03-24 09:56:24 AM
Stopped watching the weather channel when they fired Nicole Mitchell. I couldn't care less what they do now.

Why do you go to weather.com? Go to weather.gov and get the info from the source.

2013-03-24 10:04:09 AM
Well, to be fair to TWC, TVGC and MTV at least, the internet does a better job than any of them. I mean compared to TWC i can get current conditions for anywhere in the world in about two seconds, complete with 5 day forecast, radar, almanac... I think digital cable with scrollable guides killed the TVGC more than anything, but i still go to their website at least. And MTV... not like they ever played anything you wouldntve already heard, so they were never great for discovering new music, youtube has music videos.

This does not however excuse The Learning Channel, the SyFy channel, or the Hystyry channel.

TWC has become more and more irrelevant every day.  A show like this is completely pointless,

Besides, I already have one of these in the back yard, so I'm good.

Kyosuke: Why do you go to weather.com? Go to weather.gov and get the info from the source.

Oh there's a million different places I go for the weather, and although I do occasionally just punch in weather.com out of laziness, that's not my point. My point is, from their business perspective, with their branding and name recognition, why couldn't they make the best weather site on the internet?  Ten years ago if they'd committed to going all out online then maybe it would have some respect, but I think it's too late now.

2013-03-24 10:27:04 AM
Yeah, I remember when The Weather Channel actually had weather forecasts on their channel, and Local On the 8s was on more than once or twice in an hour. TWC has gone the way of so many other channels - utter crap on 90% of the time.

/another reason to be glad I finally canceled my Comcast subscription
//fark you TWC, half the stuff you show isn't even related to weather any more

Eventually, MTV will give weather forecasts, and TLC will play homemade hillbilly rap videos.

I used to tell the kids, "everyrhing you see on TV is a lie." TV continues to work hard to prove me right.

2013-03-24 10:36:37 AM
As long as they don't fark with my Gold online subscription, I will continue to ignore this bullshiat. The minute they take away my special maps online is the minute I switch to weather underground... or just straight up NOAA/NWS

Well, obviously you should contact your local cable provider and request TWC II.

It's got all the weather those crazy/hip/edgy kids are enjoying.

SciFy Channel (Ever since they got rid of MST3K, they've been making horrible movies that Mike Nelson and cast would LOVE to trash)
Comedy Central (cept for the Daily Show, Colbert Report, and reruns of older episodes of South Park)
BBC America (Look, I love Star Trek: The Next Generation, but don't you have a ton of British shows that Americans would see more, like Doctor Who in a non-early day timeslot!?)
