Why was code enforcement called? Are they going to cite the sinkhole for being improperly constructed or un-permitted?

I heard from an expert on npr that there are over 600 sinkholes per year in Florida. So this could be a headline almost everyday if we want.

Its just like the shark attack storiies, the mass shooting stories, the accidental electrocution stories, and the robberies at 711.   Happens all the time but the media loves to make a big deal out of it.  24 hour news cycle - they have to fill all that dead air with something.
And it only took two posts to start the Florida bashing.  Another suprise.

This.

I'd assume the risk of sinkholes in that particular area is bigger than the two that we've seen.

The huge one in Louisiana is probably the only potentially explosive sinkhole though.

30-foot sinkhole repaired in San Francisco's West Portal

But ours are caused by water main leaks.

Earthquakes tend to treat underground pipes poorly.

Remind me never to live on a sand bar that is only there because of an old limestone reef.

In other news: Victims of sandy hurricane to not get their internet cables back due to living on a sandbar and they can either abandon their shack or buy LTE internet/phone at 10 times the price(bandwidth usage of 100GB a month).

sheep snorter: Remind me never to live on a sand bar that is only there because of an old limestone reef.

A question for anyone with a geology background:  Is there any difference between how sinkholes form and how limestone caves form?  Other than, the ones that persist without collapsing, have an opening to the surface somewhere, and get discovered are called "caves"?

As for the Hurricane Sandy victims...are they getting power back?  If power lines can be run to their homes, why not cable TV, phone, and the rest?  Hell, any new rights of way negotiated for power lines should now include the other wires people need run to their houses as a matter of course.

I am not a geologist (though I work for them), but (WAY oversimplified here, and only talking about 'natural' sinkholes, not cave-ins caused by busted pipes or soil eroding from under roads) sinkholes are limestone caves that have caved in. The life cycle of a sink hole is basically: water pushes through limestone until there's a cave, water moves (or is moved) elsewhere, and if there's not enough to support the weight above, it caves in.

But yeah... they happen all the time, especially in the dry season, and even more so in the dry season after a sudden heavy rain. The most notable I can remember: the agriculture department at my High School had a pasture with a several hundred acre lake. A small sinkhole - about 5 feet in diameter - opened under it, and the whole lake drained into it, so quickly that when the pasture was checked Monday nothing seemed amiss, and on Thursday for class the whole lake was just... gone. I don't think that one even made the news.

And in my searching, I was reminded of this terrifying event, which happened about two years before the one I speak of, and less than 10 miles away:

(this also may explain Florida in general, actually...)
