Next year the committee can do everyone a favor and give them the 12 seed that they deserve.  And I don't care if they schedule Duke next year and put a UNLV-style beatdown on them.

2013-03-24 07:55:27 AM
Well I guess Gonzaga didn't deserve that one seed afterall.

I don't care...I'm still too busy laughing at the talking heads who said Wisconsin would beat the Zags in the Sweet 16 round.  (Apparently, none of them noticed that the Badgers can't score.)

On a related note, as a Gopher fan, I am not at all surprised that their play led to a coach getting fired.  I am surprised that it wasn't their own coach.

Gonzaga is named after the Jesuit Saint Aloysius Gonzaga.

Their mascot should be named the Bullshiatdogs. instead of the bulldogs after this game.  #1 seed?   Right...  The CBS Sports Network did a poll and they were overwhelmingly chosen as the first #1 seed to lose.

Thanks, Shockers.  My entire Elite Eight is intact as long as there are no more upsets, since Wichita State will be the higher seed next round.  (I have La Salle reaching the Sweet 16, too.)  Georgetown going down early was an easy call (though I had them lasting one more round than they managed), and the rest of my Elite Eight is just the top remaining seeds.  MSU probably has the best chance to ruin my bracket, but the rest of my picks should be heavy favorites.

You mean to tell me, a team that played three ranked teams all year - losing two and squeaking out the third against a team that got thumped in the first round - shouldn't be a #1 seed?  That a team that wasn't even top four according to RPI, KenPom, or Sagarin shouldn't have been a #1 seed?  That a team that hasn't gotten past the sweet 16 in what is approaching fifteen years shouldn't be a #1 seed?

Well I'll be damned.  I understand that it's the nature of one-and-done tournaments for upsets to happen, but on a neutral court against a team that arguably should have been in the top 25, Gonzaga proved, once again, that it's a paper tiger.

As someone who lives in Washington State, and as someone whose son is a Gonzaga graduate, I am GLAD that Gonzaga lost, although I would have preferred they win 1-2 more games. All of those Bulldog fans would have been inSUFFerable had they won a National Championship. Now they can just remain annoying.

It wasn't choking; "choking" in sports implies playing below the best of your ability due to nerves or overconfidence or whatever.  In Gonzaga's case, they got beat.  They really aren't that good.

Right, because getting the outcome of an 8-9 matchup wrong is why you can't look at yourself in the mirror.

Meanwhile, the world owes Michigan some thanks for exposing the media's darling VCU after they wore their starters out with a 40-point lead over Akron's bench.  Hey "Smart", your "double fist" only works if your guard can stay in front of Burke.  Next time, learn to rest your starters in a blowout before taking on NBA-caliber talent.

I had Gonzaga in the Final Four, but that has more to do with my complete lack of faith in Ohio State, New Mexico, Kansas State and Wisconsin than anything Gonzaga has demonstrated this year. That was the most underwhelming region I've seen in years.

2013-03-24 10:31:42 AM
With a couple exceptions, this is quickly turning into the "overseeded mid-majors get slapped around like rented mules" tournament. Outside of the ballsy Florida GC effort against Georgetown, so far the signature mid-major upsets of the tourney have come against other overrated mid-majors.  Perhaps the committee should rethink awarding some of these teams a high seed simply because they had the stones to schedule a couple losses to the big boy schools in the fall and then build a 30-3 record by beating the likes of North Pacific Bongrip U.  If nothing else, I hope the committee takes a good look at the flaws in RPI and how mid-majors are becoming more and more savvy at boosting their rank without actually playing a harder schedule (looking at you, Mountain West).

I went a little wild with upsets on my bracket because I figured it would happen (also wanted it to), and called this one correctly.

However, Kansas St. screwed me like every year,  and Memphis didn't hold out like I thought karma might allow them considering Calipari's team wasn't even in the tourney.

Either way, Gonzaga was ranked too high and too many people bought into it.

Never ever ever ever trust Gonzaga when filling out your bracket.  If you think they're good, they suck.  If you think they suck, they go to the Elite Eight.  Just flip a coin, it's easier.

Gonezaga from Chokane is the surest way to make money or win brackets in the Northwest. There are loads of worshipping Gonezaga fans around who buy into Mark "Tourney wins are" Few and his mid-major program.

This year was better than most, but in the brackets I'm in we got 2/3 of the people saying Gonezaga will make it to final four, several guys had them winning it all.

Gonzaga's issue is they refuse to leave their safe little puddle of the WCC, and actively avoids playing other Northwest competition. They cherry pick a few non conference opponents early in the year, Butler and Illinois beat them easily. They avoid the Pac-12 like it has a virus, except to play WSU when WSU is noticably down. They actively lobbied to prevent another Catholic school, Seattle U, from joining their conference for fear it would cut into their Seattle TV money.

Gonezaga has a profitable little niche and all would be well and fine with them being a 6-12 seed and being a giant killer, knocking off a major program in the opening round and maybe once in a while making the Sweet 16. Instead, they believe their own hype of being a top ten program, and fall on their faces regularly every year.

Without big NBA body guards, which Few refuses to recruit, they will never win in the tourney. They don't understand that. They think plucky grit and clean living will win them games in March up here. At least their fans do.

Best source of regular tourney victories in the Northwest -- pick against Mark Few and Gonezaga.

Pretty much this!

As a WSU alum and WSU fan, when they came to Pullman and only beat us by 2 this year, I knew they would fold up in the tourney. We were terrible this year.

I wish I had done the office bracket this year, because of the idiots who see the rankings and make their bracket accordingly.  Half my office had gonzaga in the final four.  I hope they get one seeds until they are beat by a16, just so they can be the biggest joke forever.

There are just too many teams and variables to have anything close to resembling a flawless rating system in college basketball. Teams and conferences learned how to work the RPI system years ago. They'll figure out a way to work any new system within a decade of it's inception.

As somebody in another thread said, college basketball simultaneously has the worst way of selecting a champion while being the most entertaining way to select a champion.

Maybe 15% of the teams (or approximately 10) in the tournament have the potential to win six games in a row against other tournament teams. That percentage may even be a little high when you consider the potential of multiple unfavorable match-ups along the way. In my opinion, only one of those teams has been sent home so far.

Gonzaga as a #1 and Oregon as a #12 shows me that the committee has its head WAY up its own ass.

Incontinent_dog_and_monkey_rodeo: Gonzaga as a #1 and Oregon as a #12 shows me that the committee has its head WAY up its own ass.

Look, no one really thought Gonzaga was a great team - the voters tried to keep them out of the top spot but other No. 1s just kept losing and eventually it got to the point of "well, goddammit, if we keep putting a team that recently lost ahead of the team that keeps winning, we're basically saying 'f*ck you, you're never going to get a No. 1 on our watch,'" which would be a huge problem for the polls. So they eventually got to No. 1.

Similarly, they were a No. 1 seed because they were the No. 1-ranked team. I don't follow college basketball often (I just know how polls work), but when was the last time the No. 1 team in the country didn't get a No. 1 seed (note that they didn't get the No. 1 overall)?

Incontinent_dog_and_monkey_rodeo: Gonzaga as a #1 and Oregon as a #12 shows me that the committee has its head WAY up its own ass.

Maybe I'm giving the committee way too much credit, but I think they intentionally seeded teams incorrectly. I seriously doubt that they were looking at this season only, even if that's how it's supposed to work. They gave Gonzaga a #1 seed, New Mexico a #3 seed, and St. Louis a #4 seed. All three teams fell flat on their faces before the Sweet Sixteen (though I doubt anyone really expected New Mexico to be ousted in round one (two, whatever)).

Now, they can turn around and say, "This is the shiat that happens when we give mid-majors high seeds."

Oregon's #12 seed was the worst seeding of the tournament. I'm not 100% sure what this was about. The only thing I can think of is "manufacturing" an "upset", so people who don't really follow basketball would be wowed when a #12 seed who could have arguably been a #6 seed beat a #5 seed who could have arguably also been a #6 seed.
