It's not supposed to be a club at all.

You don't have people renting out stadium, contracting catering, and buying tickets to NOT watch a show or sporting event. On the off days, people stay home. If you're an atheist, every day is the off day.

Gaudette said she was rejected by her church, her family and her friends when at 22 she admitted she no longer believed the Bible to be the literal truth. Shunned by the Jehovah's Witnesses, she hasn't spoken to her parents in 12 years - other than a phone call every six months or so from her mother to see whether she's ready to accept God back into her life.

Boy, atheists are such jerks.

Why can't they be supportive and forgiving like Christians?

We act the same regardless of what the calender says.

So, since she knows she's not going to heaven, she's thinking hell will be OK?

They ARE being supportive. They're trying to save her, can't you see? *smirks* Well, every 6 months at least.

True, but church also has a social aspect to it that many atheists miss. Such clubs fill that void without all the nattering about mysticism.

Excellent. More children need to be raised in a Godless heathen environment. it makes satan happy.

Obviously, someone just needs to start a black atheist church then.  It worked for the Baptists.
They can get their hairs did and sing and dance in exuberant choirs about the glory of no gods.

Interesting article, but being shunned by the Jehovah's Witnesses for no longer believing is standard practice.
CSB:
One of my roommates in college was disowned when he was caught with intent to distribute ecstasy. He was immediately ejected from the JW community and his family (where he was on some sort of probation). His gf scrapped up enough money from his friends to bail him out of jail, and he ended up paying them back by stripping at the gay bars in New Orleans. Last I heard he had told his family to fark off and had disappeared completely.

JW are not nice people when you try to separate yourself from them, period. It has nothing to do with race.

Atheists are rapidly becoming the whiniest, smug acting group on the planet, get over it nobody cares if you choose to not believe in a higher power. Just accept that others choose to believe and let them feel secure in their beliefs just as you choose to not have faith.

Peacock, who grew up in the African Episcopal Methodist Church, has an unspoken truce with his family when it comes to religion. At the dinner table, he bows his head in respect while others pray. At the other end of the table, his mother knows he's faking it.

Is his point is that black people have not evolved as quickly as white people have, or that they are just not as intelligent?
You know, it's getting very difficult to be racist anymore.

Ten comments in and already the derp is strong from the believers (although this is fark so most of them are just trolls). On a more serious note, yes race is just a social construct but we are social creatures. We like to be around others like us, not neccesarily the same color but the same culture (often the same thing but I'll bet two rural southerners would be more comfortable together than with a guy from NYC regardless of race)

*checks earpiece*

I'm being told these groups exist.

megalynn44: Yay. Racism.

My thoughts exactly.

FTA:

"At the same time, black atheists find their race negated by white atheists who dismiss race as irrelevant, said Peacock, a 39-year-old English professor.

"They'll tell you, 'Don't you know race is a social construct?' '' he said.

Jack Maurice, head of the Orlando Freethinkers and Humanists, said his group welcomes members of all races and sees no reason for a group of black nonbelievers. Maurice has a hard time understanding why a black person would not feel comfortable in an organization of like-minded individuals.

"We are all non-theists, we are all critical thinkers. It's no difference," he said.

But there is a difference, black atheists argue.

"They don't acknowledge that things are different in the black community," Gaudette said. "The church is the center of the black community. It's not just about religion. Everything happens there."

So he shuns religion, but stubbornly clings to a divisive RACIAL and CULTURAL identity that is intimately entwined with religion.

WTF, dude?

That's why I posted the "Confused Flour Beetle" at the top of the page.

The typical patrons at my preferred craft beer pub represent an interesting blend of local law school students and Texan farmboys. Odd that you are trying to turn them into hipsters.

Hunh?  How is basic politeness to other people "not standing up to your Mom?"

Most of my in-laws are quite religious.  They pray before meals.  When I'm eating at their house,  I bow my head and act respectful, even though I don't believe anything they say.  To do anything else would be rude, and would reflect badly on both me and other non-believers.

Most of my close family under 38 is Atheist or Agnostic. I can see where these people are coming from since religion is huge entrenched among black communities i.e the vote against gay marriage in California.

JW's can be entertaining - if I'm in the right mood. Same goes for Mormons.

Problem is, once they've visited me, they never come back.

maybe you've struck upon the difference between atheism as a true belief as the result of reflection and telling mommy you don't believe in God because she used to make you go to church and you wanna stick it to that big meanie

To all white male heterosexual agnostic scientists: it is time to check your privilege. There are way too many of you, and it is hurting the advancement of reason and rationality over the forces of superstition and bigotry by stifling minority viewpoints. Even if you do not think you are hurting the cause, your mere presence is triggering a chilling effect, preventing minorities and women from being rational. It is your duty to the cause to convert to Christianity, go back to college, and pick up a finance degree. This will move the race/gender/sexual preference ratios back to more equitable levels. Society will finally have a truly diverse set of viewpoints in agnostic/atheist and science circles, and reason will prevail.

I'll be 33 in a few hours and my mom is still (at this point it has to be willfully) ignorant of my atheism. I still go to church a handful of times a year to make my wife happy.

I'm finding it exceedingly difficult to scrape up some sympathy for this guy.  He has to leave the room if people say things he doesn't believe?  What kind of a wimp-ass is he?  Is he afraid he'll "catch" faith?  It's just one more case of someone insisting on both being unique, and only dealing with people like himself.  If you're speaking accurately, you will always be alone, a drama queen with a one-man show.  I have lots of friends with beliefs wildly different from mine, including atheists.  THEY seem to be able to handle being near someone who believes things they don't -- what's THIS guy's problem?

I live in a rural, Christian area.  I'm not a Christian.  I'm actually a pagan, have been for many years.  You wouldn't believe the horrid discrimination we endure.  And I'm not in the 'broom-closet', either, but then again I don't have a huge sign hanging off my porch that says "HEY - PAGANS LIVE HERE" or I'd probably be shot.

I think one should bow his or her head in respect during these occasions (meals, funerals). Not because others in the room are religious, but to show true respect, albeit a bit late to be heard by the recipient. Respect for the life someone lived and is now gone. Respect for the animals and plants that lived and died to fill your belly. Has nothing to do with the sky wizard, and everything to do with existing on this planet.

When other people are saying grace, personally I sneak in an 'itadakimasu' under my breath. "Before meals, itadakimasu is said as a thanks to the plants and animals that gave their lives for the meal you're about to consume. It also thanks all those involved, ranging from the hunter/farmer to the preparer of the meal." Which pretty much suits my sentiment, although I am not Japanese.
