The resulting political and legal maelstrom triggered the resignation of Republican Lt. Gov. Jennifer Carroll, who had done consulting work for the charity, and sent top elected officials from both parties in Florida and North Carolina scrambling to return or at least explain the more than $1 million in campaign contributions they accepted from donors linked to Allied.

A Republican?

It was stunning how quickly Governor Scott threw the Lt Gov to the wolves when this story broke. It doesn't fit the mold of the typical Republican administration -- deny and cover-up -- at all. It's also a frighteningly high price to exact from the career of someone who allegedly had a minor consulting role.

If not for this, I'd say this problem could be resolved through better public disclosure and tax accounting policies, and that these sweepstakes need not be banned. But now that the political angle has become so prominent, I think we need a full independent investigation of the Scott administration to see just how deep the rabbit hole goes.

Odd article.  Seems to have a lot of "it's bad that charities are linked to casinos!" at first, and takes way too long to get to the ACTUAL problem, which is that only a sliver of the money actually goes to any good.  If they were putting more of the money to the cause, I'd be all for this.

Also, electronic gambling is weird.  I just moved to a state (South Dakota) that has video gambling in bars, and it's just crushing to see some poor soul bent over a screen, poking at things, in the corner of ever bar.

Dow Jones and the Temple of Doom: gingerjet: FTFA "This is just one more example of why all Internet casinos must be shut down," Florida Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam, who oversees the sweepstakes industry

Wait wut?  Why does the Agriculture Commission oversee this industry?

/which also may explain his idiotic comment

Due to a legislator loophole, all Internet casinos must be zoned "agricultural". Technically, the Internet casinos are on farm land.

Just reaping the profits from those gullible sheep, I guess.

Dukes sucks.

Thisbymaster: The only reason why they don't like them is because the state can't tax them.

I think the state CAN tax them if they correctly report their proceeds. From TFA:

As with the Allied Veterans case announced earlier this month, the central questions will be how much money the cafes raised, how much of that should have been taxed, and how much ultimately went to charity.

His department is actually the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.  All charities which solicit donations in Florida must register with the department and disclose their financials and the identity of their board members.

/previous commissioner was Charles Bronson...nobody messed with Charles Bronson.

So like every charity.
These charities are just following the United Way/Red Cross/etc. model - find a cause people will be sympathetic towards, pay yourself and your friends 5-7 figures for running everything, and give a little bit to the needy.

Some charities are better than that.

Even the ones he listed are way better than that:
Red Cross
United Way

Kahabut: I know that there is really no difference between electronic and mechanical gambling, but man, it just FEELS different. I'm a fan of an occasional gamble, but electronic slots and Ecard games are such a huge rip off, and no fun to boot, that I can't understand why people are into it.

Especially the "poker" machines in every bar. You know, you could go play against PEOPLE that are being fed drinks, which make them play VERY badly, and you would WIN. Or you could feed that machine 20$ bills all night, your call.

I'm with ya.  At times I have folks in town that enjoy gambling.  We have a real casino.  I'll go with a few bucks, gamble slowly (craps: you can generally stay even for a very long time if you play it right), and "win" by all the free drinks I consume.

We also have electronic gambling in pretty much every bar.  You're bound to lose AND you're not getting free drinks!
