Why would they need permission from the Justice Department to do this?

The only Providence cops not getting paid are those who didn't wanna play ball with the insanely corrupt political machine.

/RI politicians make Mayor Daley look like Mr. Smith

like many Americans, North Providence is relying on the lottery to fix the financial mess they've made with their lives. Awesome.

According to TFA, they received the money then got permission from the DoJ.

If they had already received the money, I wouldn't think the DoJ would get a say in how it's used before it actually gets used.

I dont know the details of this particular settlement, but generally fines like this are supposed to be used to pay for the damages caused by whatever justified the fine in the first place. the pension fund had nothing whatsoever to do with the canadian pharmacy ads, but the DoJ apparently decided that the benefit to the overall community justified using the funds this way. The town was just making sure they wouldn't violate the terms of the settlement when they asked the DoJ.

$500 million nationwide settlement, and this one town gets $60 million?

I can see if it was in Ohio and election season, but Rhode Island?  Sheesh....

no need to come up with a balance budget or know how to plan a pension system, just sue someone!

I was curious about that too, especially since the article goes on to say East Providence Rhode Island also collected $60 million in this deal.

As a liberal my biggest issue with other liberals are the whiney little kneejerk granola types who have no clue of domestic and geopolitical reality. The kind who think everything would be better if only we forced everyone to recycle their own poop and ride a fixed gear everywhere. They are our version of the teabaggers and similarly need to be smacked upside the head.

From the SSDD files: This just in! Government launders money from company, uses it pay for shiat they can't afford.

probably only a fraction of how much google cheats out of taxes, so whatever.

BlippityBleep: probably only a fraction of how much google cheats out legally pays taxes, so whatever.

Fixed that for you. When people stop seeing it as "cheating" and see it as legal then perhaps things will get fixed.

Perhaps.

it's legal but still cheating.  when cheaters make the laws and are elected to office it doesn't make it not cheating.

One day liberals will finally realize the obvious... public union pensions are unsustainable. 80% payout after 35 years, sometimes 100% with sick payout, fundex by 5% of an employees paycheck. There is a reason you can't purchase a comparabke annuity for even half that.

How many towns need to consider bankruptcy for a liberal to realize the obvious.

I never knew until now that North Providence and East Providence were their own cities. Jeebus, Providence itself isn't that big.

A lot. They are rather stupid and Obama says otherwise.  They are idiots for Obama. Government is the god for many on the left.
