Nice HL subby.

If it wasn't for scare headlines...

Seems to ME that someone we all know wrote a book about this a couple of years back.

There were a couple weeks there that the flu had most hospitals' inpatient wards full up.  Fortunately, it subsided, but unless I'm mistaken most of the doom and gloom about this flu season came from those couple weeks.

Didn't get flu shot... didn't get flu.  Girlfriend and family all got flu shots, all got flu.

/anecdotal evidence is anecdotal
//seriously though, this year it seemed that way for many people

I don't have time to catch this hysteria from the media here in Florida because I'm too busy anxiously waiting to be swallowed up by a DEADLY SINK HOLE!!!111!!

I've never had a flu shot, and I can't remember the last time I had the flu.

/anecdotal etc.

Hey sunny, that isn't what the article said at all. There were an average number of pediatric deaths and 2.5 times more hospitalization for the elderly. The flu vaccine was particularly ineffective in the elderly. So yeah, it was a pretty bad flu year.

I've yet to get a shot, and I've yet to get these weird flus you people all keep imagining you're getting.

zomg you're all gonna die some day.

2013-03-23 01:26:59 PM
Well people died of AIDs too since they didn't get the vaccine.

They're mostly full of shiat, but there are a couple of studies showing that getting the 2008-2009 seasonal vaccine increased the chance of catching the H1N1 pandemic strain.

This flu thing. It has a season? So it happens every so often on a regular schedule? Like Winter does?

Good to now but we must continue panicking like its the newest worstest thing ever.

/got to move those color tveeeesssss.

I had the flu for 3 weeks.  Still worth not getting a shot.

Fark this year. I got the damn flu twice in 2 1/2 months. I just celebrated my first full week of feel well.

Having a head cold does not mean you have the flu.

I had the worst year in about a decade this year.  Couple colds, one nasty flu type bug that gave me a cough that still hasn't gone away almost two months later.

No, see, the dumb made up reasons modern-day people panic over not getting a shot are just as dumb as the overblown reasons people do get a shot.

If you work in medical/hospital, around sick people non stop, or teach in grade school then yeah, get a shot.

Normal adults going to work every day? Thats overblown. Get it if you personally want it, but please stop turning that into a mandate for everyone. Not everyone shares your concerns or your keen sense of knowing whats better for everyone else.

If I get sick I'll stay home, trust me.

Meanwhile, please stop quoting Jenny McHoohaw as a reason everyone who doesn't want a shot is a wingnut. We're not. She is. She speaks for herself, and the 3 people that still care what she thinks, because 1) boobs, 2) she was married to Jim Carey for a while, and 3) was on MTV two decades ago as some kind of celebrity who imagined she was "smart," but only when compared to the normal strain of MTV celebrity. We should immunize against celebrities talking medical advice. Oprah would need a whole medical lab to innoculate people against the dumb mass market hyped up medicine she's unleashed over the years. McCarthy is small time compared to that idiot.

Seriously, it sucks! I have never had the flu in my life as far as I recall, so I was equally pissed/confused. Even worse is that one of the few things that made me feel even a little better, Theraflu, got recalled in late January, and it still isn't back on the shelves yet.

OK, fair enough. I was just wondering that if it works, why not get it even if your just Joe Schlub?
It's not like there was a shortage or anything (as far as I know). Anyhow didn't mean to ruffle any feathers.
I got the shot this year for the first time ever (I have COPD) and I still got the flu, albeit not as bad as past years. Personally I am still not convinced it works.

Came to say this.  Anecdotally, of all the people I know, I think more than 50% of them got the flu during that (short-ish) outbreak.  Luckily, not me or the Mrs.

For all of you claiming to have gotten the flu vaccine and still got influenza:

The vaccine is designed to treat what the WHO *thinks* will be the dominant strain of influenza for the coming year.

This does not mean that they couldn't be wrong or that you could catch a DIFFERENT strain not covered by the shot.

Come on folks; this isn't heavy lifting.

The strains in the flu shot were a very good match for what was floating around, yet it's effectiveness this year missed the mark big. I still have not heard the reasoning why from the CDC.

//Did not get the shot, wife did. Whole house got it twice thanks to that nasty evil thing called "Daycare".

No, because I hate needles.  I've been a human pin cushion on more than one occasion before, so I avoid any and all needles.

1. Get sick
2. Take day off
3. Smoke weed to take care of unpleasant symptoms
4. ........
5. Fark

Flu fark ftw

You'd almost think that the government (CDC) and the major media outlets were on the payroll of the evil Big Pharma.  There really has been an inordinate amount of fear-mongering these past few years.

/most people will be OK whether they take a vaccine or not
//undoubtably a few will die and some WILL get sick after receiving the vaccine
//it's almost like it's more about greater profits than caring about people's health

That is the sad truth.  Getting a flu shot in no way means you won't get the flu.

But if you predict that THIS is the year for the REALLY KILLER flu eventually you will be right. Personally I predict every year will be THE year from now til 2113 (you know I'll be right one of these years)

I got the flu shot, and I didn't get the flu. Then again, I haven't had the flu since the early 90's...( and I skipped getting the shot for years)

/ shot was subsidized by my employer...
