dryknife: Not an oceanographer or anything of the sort, but don't the currents tend to bring flotsam the other direction, i.e., eastward? For instance all the junk from the Japan tsunami washing ashore along the U.S. west coast.

Very generally, the currents are circular in nature, nearer the equator it runs west, hits Asia and comes back east at about 30 degrees N latitude or higher.
