I left a pair of Ray Bans in a rental car (Mustang) back in Maui in 2001.

The lenses were silver, if that helps identify them.

Help me find them.

You're out of luck until that Mustang washes up on a beach in Taiwan it seems.

No way that'll happen.  It's already been slaughtered, sold and eaten by hungry Ikea customers.

The owner has an open ticket from China Airlines to pick up the camera in person in Taiwan.

If you have any clue who she is, we'd love to know so those memories long gone can be returned and she can make new ones in Taiwan.

That is just awesome. Wish there were more people in the world like this.

My wife and I went to Maui this past year and I found some sunglasses in the trunk of our rented convertible. Not Ray Bans though, sorry!

Not an oceanographer or anything of the sort, but don't the currents tend to bring flotsam the other direction, i.e., eastward? For instance all the junk from the Japan tsunami washing ashore along the U.S. west coast.

Very generally, the currents are circular in nature, nearer the equator it runs west, hits Asia and comes back east at about 30 degrees N latitude or higher.

Seriously, the Taiwanese are the nicest people of anywhere I've been in the world. People will go out of their way to help you for absolutely no reason other than to be nice.

"Hey, we found your camera & don't want to risk losing it in the post, so why don't you fly out here on our dime to come pick it up?"

I really hope this isn't a viral marketing thing.  I'd really like to believe that there are sincerely nice & generous people out there.

I'm sure the free trip to Taiwan to pick up the camera is a marketing thing attached to a nice gesture.  She gets the camera back and a free trip, they get pictures and video of them being nice in exchange.

Lots of businesses do community outreach as part of their marketing department.  Giving away thousands or millions of dollars is a real thing to do, but it's still a form of marketing.  Sponsoring a benefit is a nice thing to do, but it's still marketing.

Not that there's anything wrong with it.  In the end, they're helping someone/thing out.  They're just helping their own interests along the way.

It's a Canon; they make underwater cases for most of its PowerShot compact cameras. I've got one for my old A720IS (but I'm pretty sure it's in my house, not in Taiwan, and I'm no lady).  There are different ones for different models, since they've got external controls that match up to the ones on the camera.  Usually $200-$300 on top of the price of the camera, so more than you'd probably spend for one of the current crop of "water/dust/drop-resistant" compacts - but these things are rated to something like 100 feet deep, apparently barnacle-proof (and if they look carefully, there might be some scrapes or scratches from things that saw it floating and said "ooh, a jellyfish!") It's a hell of a lot cheaper than getting a DSLR, Ikelite case and external flash/strobes and all that.
