Got mine about a year and a half ago. There was discomfort afterward. I had to wear tighty ball-hugging underwear for a few weeks otherwise the jostling was pretty painful on my sore bits. All in all, a good thing, but not without a fair amount of discomfort. At the time, I wished that I was one of those people who liked pain pills.

Why the fark wouldn't they? Sounds like bullshiat. They'll give women birth control starting as soon as they have a farking period but won't give a 26 year old male a vasectomy? Equal reproductive rights in the US my ass. I can't wait for RISUG to come to this country...especially if doctors don't restrict it's use (just like they don't really restrict the many types if birth control options women have).

Imagine the rage if abortion clinics did this...actually, I think they should.  It would force red-state legislators to waste more time legislating and outlawing the practice of giving a free pizza with abortion and less time passing real restrictive anti-abortion laws.

They won't do surgery to tie a woman's tubes till she has had children. This is the same thing.  A vasectomy is too drastic to do at such a young age. It may not be 100% reversible if you decide later to have children. Men have equal birth control rights. You have the right to use a condom. You have the right to make sure your partner uses the pill or one of the many other forms of birth control. You even have the right to abstain from sex because you don't want to do the one thing you KNOW causes pregnancy. You aren't a dog that that has to go around humping everything. You can exercise self control. I know! Shocking!

...or we could just trust adults (men and women) to make important reproductive choices for themselves that have lifelong consequences. If one can chose to be a parent at 18, they should be able to choose he opposite.

Same reason they wont tie the tubes of women that age. They prefer you to be older as well as already having at least one child to prevent the inevitable crowd who regret the decision later on. If you were to poll all 20-somethings, most would say they don't want kids, however that typically changes in their 30s. Even though these surgeries can be reversed with greater success these days, it's still considered a permanent procedure.

Bullshiat. Women have choices: shots, IUD, pills, tubal ligation, and physical barriers other than condoms. Most of which will be prescribed without much of a discussion with a doctor. All, except some physical barriers, she could lie about without any legal recourse. Don't tell me about equality in reproductive rights when it doesn't exist.

I got my vasectomy in the mid 90s a few years after both my kids were born.  I don't normally mind getting shots, but for this the surgeon used the longest, scariest looking  medical needle I have ever seen to deaden the balls, of course it had to be used twice, and it hurt big time.
I must say the surgeon was very professional, and especially his hot young female technician who assisted in the process.  She was jabbering away with the doctor while handling my junk, even though she had to be seething with desire at my "equipment"

Yep, same here, but ten years later in the mid-naughties.

I had my prevas-party with our friends at an omelette place called "Great Eggspectations".

Random notes, since this is the kind of thing people don't talk about too much...

* you get to shave your pubes like a porn star. The cute nurse will do this for you. But no guarantees she'll be gentle.

* my HMO covered the procedure at the time. They don't want to pay for delivering any more babies than I want to pay for raising them.

* Pain wasn't bad, but the doctor did comment that he was a bit freaked that I was so stoic. To me, it was just a commitment to raise my existing kids (1 primary, 1 aux backup) right.

* Recovery meant no rough sex for a few weeks. The knots remain sore for about a year, but only if you manage to squeeze them. Hoever, the guys feel fine if that's what you're worried about.

* All the other glands stay connected, so you still get plenty of cheese. It's just not as interesting to look at under a microscope anymore. (you do have to provide a sample post-op)

* If there's any reduction in sex drive, it wasn't noticeable, esp. compared to the natural reduction from growing out of your horny-teen years, and the reduction from having kids around the house all the time. It's still too high compared to the Mrs., but supposedly she catches up in her 30s - 40s.

* Didn't see any reduction in, uh, aggressive behaviors. Maybe I became more risk-averse, but your car insurance goes down at 25 anyway, so that's already been established that you're going to act less dumb. Still have the cajones to try new things, like mountain climbing, downhill skiing, sparring with larger / faster guys, scuba diving, etc.

* Stress is wayyy down, it was one big thing less to worry about.

2013-03-23 01:35:08 PM
You lay on your back.
He puts a big sheet of paper over you that has a saucer sized hole in it over you
So your junk sticks out the hole in the paper.
He injects novacaine on the right side, then the left side.
The injection hurts like hell.
The remainder of the procedure also hurts
But it is a dull pain mixed with the feeling of having your balls racked.
He pokes a little hole in the front center of your ball sack.
He uses a little wire to fish the right vas tube up to the hole in your sack.
He snips a little piece out and clamps/glues/cauterizes both cut ends.
He pushes the right vas tube back in.
He repeats the procedure on the left side.
One dissolving stictch is used to close the ball-sack hole.
You get a script for hydrocodone and instructions to come back in two weeks.
It could be black and blue for a few days.
It will ache and it will hurt when you move the wrong way the next week or so.
When you go back after 2 weeks, he looks to make sure it is healing and not infected.
They give you two "sample" cups.
You need to ejaculate 12-15 times then collect a sample.
You take the sample to the doctor.
He looks at it under a microscope and confirms no live sperm.
You have to take another sample next week.
If that one also contains no live sperm then you are officially sterile.
If there is live sperm in the sample you have to keep bringing samples until twice in a row with none.
If live sperm continues to be present then one or both of the vas tubes healed
This means the vasectomy failed and you have to do it again.

In Florida, Dr Doug Stein. http://www.vasweb.com
$500, 15 minutes, no needle, no scalpel

Instead of a needle he has thing that sprays topical deadener. Let it soak in for a couple minutes, and I didn't feel a thing. Zip, zero, nada. I had some soreness on and off for maybe 3 days, but it was partially my own fault. First, the undies were too tight, and second I got real stupid and jumped over the baby gate. The bounce when I landed was like lightning struck me in the back of each testicle. It literally brought me to my knees right there in the kitchen :/

May as well throw it out there that my wife and I have been having a bit of a disagreement lately, and we made up last night. Four times.

All in all, a good thing, but not without a fair amount of discomfort. At the time, I wished that I was one of those people who liked pain pills.

Got mine done in November. Felt like I got kicked in the balls for a day, then uncomfortable for a week or two. Ball-huggy underwear for a couple of weeks or it really hurt. Good news: wife is off of birth control and loves me to death for taking one for the team. Got laid about an hour ago.

Yup.  Got mine like this 14 months ago.  Very little trouble after the procedure.  Funny thing was that the right side didn't hurt at all but the left side did a little.  The doctor said that it's because your brain is expecting it after the first cut.  Interesting...

Another interesting factoid was that the doctor told me that folks without kids before the procedure (obviously) are far less likely to come back later looking to get it reversed.  He should know.  He told me that he had probably done over 10,000 in his career up to that point.

Anyway, it was worth it.  There have been only a couple times since that I've felt any discomfort, and it was minimal at that.  Totally worth not getting the Mrs. preggers.

Totally worth not getting the Mrs. preggers.

This. I had mine 3 years ago. I didn't need pizza bribery, but I wouldn't have turned it down as a nice bonus.

Mija:You have the right to make sure your partner uses the pill or one of the many other forms of birth control.

No you don't.  That would be infringing on a woman's reproductive rights.  She has the right to go off the pill and milk you for child support for 21 years.

Mija: They won't do surgery to tie a woman's tubes till she has had children.

Bullshait they won't.

31, tied off six years ago.  No kids.

Jon iz teh kewl: why the hell would you WANT a vasectomy?

you might as well be injecting salt petre

You're so full of shiat, it's spattering on my keyboard.

Two years on, I'm as horny as I ever was.  My woman can assure you.
Stop trying to cast your own unfounded fears.

TheWhoppah: You lay on your back.

Pretty accurate, although my experience:
The initial lidocaine shots were just mild pokes, and once they took effect there was no pain at all for the rest of the procedure.  In fact, I could barely feel anything at all in my scrotum.
I was given a prescription for a pain killer; took none of them.  I had no pain afterwards, outside of mild aches if I jostled the boys too hard.  That sensitivity lasted a week at most.  I had my procedure on a Friday, was back at work Monday as usual, had sex again by Wednesday.  Absolutely zero discomfort since then.

ramblinwreck: Why the fark wouldn't they?

I went through several doctors trying to get mine, at 30. If I wasn't married, that doctor wouldn't have done it either.

/Needed a second 'cause I'm a freak with 3 vas deferens and only 2 were cut
//In the second they pop 'em out to look for extras

ReverendJasen: I had my procedure on a Friday,... had sex again by Wednesday

My doctor told me that the vas is really long and it takes about 40 ejaculations to completely clear it. Wednesday seems a little soon to me. That's about what it was like for me. I was told the procedure would feel like getting kicked in the balls a couple times but it didn't at all. He says he has heard from several men that their wives got pregnant but it always turned out that the wife was cheating.

This is a key point.  Get a doctor that is experienced doing the procedure and it should be quick and painless.  My GP referred me to a specialist and I had no discomfort at any point.  A tiny pinch as the anesthetic was injected, no sensations during the operation and walked out just fine.  I didn't even need the proverbial bag of peas.  Doc scheduled a checkup 2 weeks later to verify with the advice to "clean out the pipes" during those 2 weeks.  I've had more pain stubbing my toe (seriously).

There is no physiological basis for your statement. Any "reduction in drive" would be purely psychosomatic.
