Completely disagree.  LOVE Matt Smith.

And Sylvester McCoy was the one I couldn't stand.

I vote for Idris Elba.

Opinions may vary on matters of taste, but I can assure you, categorically and unequivocally, that in this instance, you are very, very wrong.

I'll be interested to see who they bring in.  It would be cool if they brought that ginger dude from Le Mis and Pillars of the Earth in.

I'll be glad to see him go.

AdolfOliverPanties: Idris Elba.

I still like the idea of him being the next James Bond.

I was ready to hate Matt Smith. By the 3rd or 4th episode in I was sold.

Helps that he's drawing on some 2nd Doctor traits. That's what hooked me.

/7th Doctor FTW though :D

McCoy wasn't one of my faves either, but at least he was better then that awful actor Tom Baker...

I haven't watched any of the modern Doctor Whos except for the pilot episode of Eccleston's Doctor. You know who I think would be an interesting choice for The Doctor? Bill Nighy.

I did not know that. Shame that he didn't get the role.

So will the Valeyard make an appearance during the new 12th Doctor's run? Or are they gonna send that character down the memory hole, along with the fact that a Time Lord can only regenerate twelve times before dying (thirteen incarnations in all)? From Wikipedia:The Valeyard is a fictional character from the long-running British science fiction television series, Doctor Who. He is described as an aspect of the Doctor from between his twelfth and final incarnations as depicted in the TV show or regenerations in the novelization of the story. In the serial The Trial of a Time Lord, comprising the whole of Season 23 of the series, the Time Lords appoint the Valeyard as prosecutor at the Sixth Doctor's trial, hoping to have him executed and thereby removing the sole witness to their near-destruction of life on Earth.

I hope they do include the Valeyard.

As for the regenerations I highly doubt they'll let the series just end, but I bet they address it.

There was also an episode in season 5 of the new series where Toby Jones plays the Dream Lord (Link).  In the end the Dream Lord is revealed to be the Doctor's dark side given power by an alien spore. Could be a precursor to a Valeyard appearance later.

While that's a bummer, he does get the 50th Anniversary special, and goes out on a high note.

I was hoping he would stay around for season 8 and get the season to himself without having to go through another arc all about the latest mostest specialest girl in all the Universe, though.

Now hopefully, Moffat will be heading out the door at the same time. They don't exactly need a new Doctor, but a new show runner? Yes, please.

They have. River gave him ALL of her regenerations to save him. So that's, I believe, 11 more Regenerations left to the old boy.

Hey. At least he's more candid than Abrams, Cuse and Lindelof were with "LOST". Geez than nerd rage was awful when if became increasingly obvious that they didn't have a defined end game

Also, didn't I hear not too long ago, maybe pre-season 7, that he was good through 2014? I swear I did.

2013-03-22 03:02:46 PM
They're still cool to me!

As for the regeneration limit, I thought they pitched that a while back.  The Master is well beyond his 12.

Bill Nighy would be an awesome choice, but I doubt they would go with someone that old.  Might be time for a woman though.

My nominees for worst choices: Justin Timberlake, Colin Ferrell, Will Ferrell.

That's a signature of the Moffat years, for sure. Every female companion except Martha Jones has had crazy super powers at one point, or been the MOST IMPORTANT PERSON IN ALL EXISTENCE FOR WHOM THE DOCTOR MUST PERSONALLY SAVE ALL TIME AND SPACE.

Sad tag? Maybe. But the recent spate of utterly forgettable episodes isn't his fault, it's the writers. They need to be flogged.

At least McCoy had season 26, which was a fairly solid season with three very good serials out of four. Colin Baker didn't even get a full good season, just glimpses of greatness.

I mostly enjoyed the IDEA of the Trial season, if not the actual execution of it. The framework was there, but the writers seemingly hated working on the show.

And if anyone mentions Timelash, I'm going to whip out my Untempered Schism.

It's a mini.

I don't think the regeneration limit has ever been mentioned during NuWho. Wasn't it an artificial limit imposed by Rassilon, which means it may no longer matter anyway?

The article's list of replacement candidates is fairly amusing. There's no way on earth that Cumberbatch would do it for less than twice what Tennant earned... he'll be worth ten times that in Hollywood after Trek.

Ahem:

Rupert Grint.

That will be all.

I'll miss him, but I thought that about Eccelstein and Tennant. The Doctors have been just as good/better than the previous one. Same with the companions. It'll work out.

PizzaJedi81: Ahem:

Not remotely the same situation. Grint started as a child, and wasn't known to US audiences for any other reason. Nobody ever wanted to know anything about Grint as a person outside of HP.

Cumberbatch is already pretty well known in the USA for Sherlock, numerous interviews, etc. All Trek will do is cement his box-office bankability.

Can't use him.  He's too recognizable, and since he was already in "Vincent and The Doctor", they'd have a tough time explaining why The Doctor now looks and sounds like the curator of the Van Gogh exhibit at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.

Lame. I would just hope they would stick with actually having it end after the last Doctor. I know it's a show about time travel and they seem to change the rules all the time, but this is one rule they should try to follow and it could lead to a very good ending. I would prefer not seeing this show just end in the middle of no where and have it disappear again.
