Fark that mess.

And in case anyone's never seen it: Tower climbers working 1,700+ feet up

Bonus point if you can make it through the whole thing without your hands starting to sweat

they say the fear of heights is not the fear of falling, it's the fear that you might jump.

AngryJailhouseFistfark: I am remind of parachute school. I was more spooked looking over the edge of the 10 meter tower in training than I was looking out the door of the jump plane. I could imagine falling from a 3-story building and busting myself up. But looking at the ground 4,000 feet below me looked like a photo of a landscape, and it was all so surreal that it never really registered. I think it's one of those primitive brain things where it cannot conceive of stuff that ancient Homo sapiens never encountered in his evolution.

THIS this this.

My friends had mentioned that when they went out the side of the jump plane, they tumbled a single rotation (normal for tandem jumps) but had no memory of the tumble.  Something in their brain just cut out recording for that first second or two.  One instant they're in the door, next thing they remember they're spreadeagle and falling, with no memory of the transition.

I go up my first time, telling myself "You know to expect this, you WILL remember the tumble."

One instant I'm in the door, next thing I remember I'm spreadeagle and falling.  No goddamn clue what happened in between.

Amusement: Wonder if they turned off the WiFi and cell transmitters on the tower?

/cancer

No. No. No. NO. NO.

Microwave radiation CANNOT cause cancer by transmission like that. It simply lacks the energy to ionize bonds to cause DNA damage. Physics doesn't work that way.

Now, cooking you alive, on the other hand... That is well within the realm of possibility.

awalkingecho: I wish I'd gotten this in before the tower climbers video because that one's a tough act to follow, but this one is both crazy and beautiful for those who haven't seen it.

Climb-y Goodness

I emailed Daniel Ahnen several years ago to ask him how he shot the El Camino Del Ray footage.  He had a small Sony Handicam on a Stedicam, which means he only had one hand free to hold on to and no safety harness.  Found out just recently he fell to his death in May of 2011.

I've know a couple of the tower guys.  They usually can't get insurance due to what they do.

that's what happens when governments spend money on construction rather than destruction.

On one hand, yes. On the other, I wouldn't spend much time extolling any virtues about Dubai's government.

/you know, the whole slave labor and building a lot of pretty things off nothing but lines of credit and wishful thinking thing...

Unless I landed in that big pool.  Then I'd be all right.

From a half-mile up? No, you'd be very dead.

jaylectricity: He probably has something to hold on to.

I would hope so, but it wouldn't make a difference to me.  I could be cabled in five different ways and I would still lose my shiat.

That's why I have to give mad respect to Tom Cruise for filming a lot of his own scenes in MI:4 on the outside of that building.  Yeah, he was cabled in, and yeah, he probably figured Xenu would save him or some shiat, but he was out there, running along that outside of that farking tower. Farking hell.
