Distaffbopper just had her hip replaced a few months ago.

My parents have 3 replaced hips between them, so I figure it's just a matter of when, not if, for me.

Patients with hip failure who have good insurance and are healthy enough to survive total hip replacement are happier and healthier than patients without good insurance or who wouldn't survive surgery.

My Dad would probably love a new hip, he had Legg-Perthes when he was a kid and the head of his femur is dead. However, he's got a 15 year old bypass to worry about and his cardiologist says, "Surgery? General anaesthetic? Yeah, right!"

Or also people that have hip replacement get more exercise than those that are still disabled, which is linked to protecting against heart disease, type 2 diabetes, (and probably depression).

I had my right hip replaced in 2009 and I still don't find Bea Arthur sexy.

I just recently started watching Maude on Antenna tv channel and can't understand how such a manly feminist could've had 4 husbands.

This

Yep.

Prior to her hip replacement, I had to help the distaffbopper into bed.  She could only walk a short distance with a cane.  She couldn't walk at all without it.   When she went shopping, she had to use one of those electric carts unless it was for a very short time, and she could support herself with a shopping cart.

The arthritis in her hip was literally crippling.

Now, about 6 months after her hip replacement, she's doing much better.

That's probably the conclusion the authors were going for, but I thought I'd point out that this was not a randomized study, and the data and methods they used are very prone to selection bias. If someone who needed a hip replacement didn't get one, there was probably a medical or financial* reason. It seems likely to me that this study magnified the apparent benefit of the hip replacement surgery.

*I believe Medicare pays only 80%, so people unable to afford the remaining 20% are out of luck. Does anyone happen to know if this is true?

I think so. I believe it has a left spin and is the antimatter equivalent to the god particle, or theocron.
