(Opposing Views)   You've just been tackled after trying to pepper spray some dollar store employees. Do you: a) just lay there, b) apologize profusely, or c) hand the peppery spray to your daughter and yell, "You know what to do, baby. Spray it"   (opposingviews.com) divider line 44

I have gotta go to one of these Dollar Store places. When Wal-Mart devotees look down their noses at you, then you must be doing something glorious.

Sad.

It does this woman's heart to hear touching stories such as this. Poor woman, suffering from anxiety and depression, innocently forgets to pay for 1 little thing and is tackled by minimum wage workers in front of a 7 yr old child. The child, knowing her mother is on medication, refuses to use the pepper spray for fear of hitting her mother.

/it's dusty in here

It's just pepper spray. It's practically harmless long term.

Recording it IS more important than anything else because it's evidence and hilarious.

Nice of the guy to stand there filming while the woman employee was fighting. Classy.

This is why my kids carry their OWN pepper spray.  Why risk fumbling the hand-off?

Damn, that dollar store employee kicked her ass!

I guess you've got to be hard to work at the dollar store.

/The lady at my local dollar store has Love Kills tattooed on her hand, but otherwise seems nice.

Also, if you look, the employee appears to be winning. You don't help the good guys when they're on top of the bad guys and beating them. You do help your mother when some tart's got her pinned down and you've got a can of pepper spray.

While horrible in some ways, this whole situation has restored my faith in humanity. Everyone acted their part properly and honor was retained by all.

Devil's advocate time. Granted she's a shoplifter, but it looks like the employee was outright assaulting her. There are things an employee can and cannot do when detaining a shoplifter and that employee seemed to cross way over the line of what's legal.

Over the line, perhaps. But soul satisfying, definitely.

She wasn't detaining a shoplifter, she was exercising self defense against a violent criminal who used chemical weapons. This was a dangerous attack and armed robbery, not shoplifting. Now go grow a pair of balls and raise a beer to the lady who worked there, because she's a true American hero. Also the kid, because go kid. Don't let anyone fark with your mom.

young girl did not use the spray, but watched as her mother was pinned to the ground until police arrived

Or she couldn't work out the trigger. The button doesn't push straight down, you have to push the tab to the side, then down. Keeps you from accidentally deploying it while it's in your pocket.

My bad. I didn't think she sprayed them until after they grabbed her. After reviewing the video (with audio this time) I see where she actually sprayed them as she was walking out. I retract my earlier statement.

Seven year olds are texting, using game consoles, pushing a tab up and lever down is elementary.

here's the trick, though. don't go to the ones where everything is actually $1. they're usually full of old white geezers. go to the stores with Dollar in the name. Family Dollar, Dollar General. everything $10 or less, basically. go there on christmas eve. you'll flee to Walmart.

Less liability watching instead of participating. You can get an assault charge trying to detain someone without the authority to.

PsyLord: Shoplifting from a dollar store?  Way to set your sights high.

Pretty much what I told my son when he was nine.  He stole a cap gun from the 99 cent store.  He had five cap guns at home.

"Son, don't try to be a criminal.  You're no good at it."

Funny thing:  Colorado sets statutory damages for shoplifting at $200, minimum.  That's where his chore money went for the next few months.  He couldn't even afford caps for the guns he had.
