And here I thought it was the copious amounts of product they used, a Joker style combination that can sanitize even the worst Jersey has to throw at it.

I mean, they DO lay under what amounts to a sanitizer lamp for hours at a time to become orange-Americans.

People are woefully terrified of melanoma because of the simpleminded, fear spewing media.  Basically, if you limit your aggregate daily sun exposure to 15 minutes or less, you are completely safe.  Unfortunately, that's nearly impossible, though certainly miserable, unless you want to walk around like one of those old chinese women under the constant shade of a golf umbrella.  If you stay in the sun for 15 minutes to 4 hours, your skin is in the prime melanoma growing exposure range.  Think of a bell curve, with the best growth conditions occurring around the two hour mark.  However, once you pass four hours of aggregate exposure, your risk goes to near zero.  It doesn't have anything to do with how tan or sunburned you get, or your native complexion.  It's all about duration and as repeated blind studies have shown, the longer the better.

The hard part is figuring out how to get at least four hours of direct exposure.  It's easy if you work outside, but if you're an office monkey, you'll probably want to get a sun lamp to put by your desk.  Your goal is to get your skin as dark as possible, so you almost look like a chimpanzee.  Apes have about zero occurrence of melanoma because they spend most of their days lounging in the trees, doing a bunch of nothing but soaking up the sun.  So really, to be the healthiest, try to be as lazy as possible in everything you do.

Had a melanoma last year. Next time I'll just get some scary guy with open mouth wounds to lick that mole clean. Sounds better than 20 stitches, and honestly just a good time.
