FTA:  With an estimated wild population of about than 95,000, they are classified as near threatened by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)

With a population of 95,000 how is it at all threatened?  How many do there have to be for a group like that to say "nah, they're good"?

Seriously? That's not a very large number or animals. Think about this: there are 1.2 billion sheep in the world.

For a species to be near threatened, (which is not the worst, see:  http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/b5/Status_iucn3.1_thre atened.svg), there are a multitude of factors to be considered, including habitat shrinkage, predation, poaching, human encroachment, are development, birth rates, disease, etc, etc.

For a herbivore. I'm guessing 95,000 is a fairly small number, for the species. Now if it was a large carnivore, that requires a large territory, 95,000 might represent a healthier number.

Bored so looked up a few similar herd species
Wildebeest -- 1.5 million
Zebra-- 600K
Thomson's Gazelle-- 500K
Giraffes-- 200K
So yeah, 95000 would be a small number for that type of animal I would think.

Now there's a question you don't hear every day.  Took these myself in Samburu, Kenya.  One of the strangest antelope I've ever seen.  If that surreal super long, skinny neck wasn't enough then you seen them get up on their hind legs to reach leaves.  Freaky.

95,000 is not a very large number when you're talking about an entire species.  Aside from that, you're thinking about it far too simplistically.
It depends a lot on the species you're talking about.  There isn't one specific number for all animals that marks "endangered" or "not endangered".  The number is arrived at by studying the population dynamics of a species and trying to factor in population pressures like environmental degredation, hunting and poaching by humans, food availability, natural range, territoriality, etc.  There is reasonably sophisticated math involved in these sorts of calculations, requiring differential equations for even the simplest of circumstances.

there are 7 - 8 billion humans. you dont think less than a 100 K is small for a herd animal  ?
