RobertBruce: He's not good - it's just that he's being replaced by worse.

True but there's more.
You and everyone else are missing the point: In the bio of Carson on American Masters Leno flatly states that the goal of a successful LATE NIGHT talk show is to give people the opportunity to wind down and forget their troubles at the end of the day. And that is exactly what Leno does and he does it well.  I don't watch him because he seems to pander to his guests but give him his props: he does what he thinks is right and it words because he consistently kicks every other host in the ratings.

What gets me about the article is:
1) Leno was NEVER caustic and I say this as someone who saw him three times in the years preceding him making it big - once in front of a crowd of only 20 people.

2) Letterman's schick of being the 'grumpy old man' of talk show hosts is tired and boring. His attitude is piss poor  and he seems to hate even having to show up for work.

3) Conan sucks  and his movie from last year shows him to be a Grade 'A' jerk

4) WHY doesn't anyone - and this article is a great example - ever mention FERGUSON?!?!?

I know it's not a popular opinion, but I think Fallon is the closest thing to Johnny Carson there is on television right now, and they really need a Johnny Carson. Fallon is the only host I see that allows guests their time in the spotlight, without all the posing and preening and quipping that the other hosts to do massage their own egos. Fallon has many of the traits that made Carson such a good host. Carson (at least on set) was the nicest most patient guy in the business, and Fallon has that same on-air personality.

Yeah and the trouble with Fallon is acts like a 12 year hearing fart jokes for the first time.

Farking allah I wish he would act like an adult. 'Slow jam the news' seriously? This passes for comedy on his show.

And the band looks like they hate him.

CSB -

I was on 'Jaywalking' once.  The summer after I graduated HS I went with a friend to visit his uncle in LA, and while walking around Universal (I think) a camera crew jumped us and suddenly Jay Leno is in front of me asking me how many stars are on the US flag, so I of course answered '52'.  He asked if I knew what they represented and I of course told him 'one for every state', he then did a smart-assy 'Oh wow, what were the last two added?' and I looked at him like he was an idiot and said 'Alaska and Hawaii of course'.  It wasn't till after I signed the waiver that my buddy informed him I told him there were 52 stars for 52 states, at which point it was all too late.  My excuse is I panicked and was thinking cards in a deck.

lack of warmth: Happy Hours: And an interesting thing I just learned from Wikipedia. Johnny Carson only got his gig after "Bob Newhart, Jackie Gleason, Groucho Marx, and Joey Bishop all declined".

I'm not sure who Joey Bishop is - maybe I'm just ignorant - but Bob Newhart, Jackie Gleason and Groucho Marx were all much funnier than Johnny Carson could ever have hoped to be.

I disagree about Newhart, he is very funny but I don't see him really pulling off a 'host' position.  Jackie wouldn't even need a sidekick, but I am not sure if hosting would be his thing.  However, Groucho would've been amazing.  I think it would've been tough on the guest to somehow be more entertaining than him.  Carson introduced a lot of comedy talent to the masses, but Leno really doesn't like having anyone getting a chance to out perform him.  Even though Carson is the only reason we've heard of Leno.

I think Newhart would have worked well as a host. His humor is a bit more subdued or something. I'm not even sure that's the right word to use. I am glad he didn't take the job though because if he had we probably would never have been rewarded with either the Bob Newhart Show or Newhart.

And I find it odd what I'm going to say next because I'm usually the first person whining about overpaid people who make millions for doing next to nothing, but let's face it - any TV host (daytime or late night) has to go out there night after night and try to be entertaining. Many people will hate them no matter what they do.

They're bound to have some bad days. They can't please everyone all the time.

and yes, I hate most of the late night talk show hosts....I generally just avoid watching them unless they happen to have a guest that I am interested in.

That goes for Leno too. Even though I like him, I usually won't watch unless he has a guest that I'm interested in.

douchebag/hater: 1) Leno was NEVER caustic and I say this as someone who saw him three times in the years preceding him making it big - once in front of a crowd of only 20 people.

You gotta respect someone who gets on stage for an audience that small. One of my favorite musicians started off that way and I saw him play at small venues like that. Now? Well, he sells thousands of tickets for each show.

2) Letterman's schick of being the 'grumpy old man' of talk show hosts is tired and boring. His attitude is piss poor  and he seems to hate even having to show up for work.

Seems like a fair assessment - I used to like that guy 25 years ago, but I don't think much of him now.

3) Conan sucks  and his movie from last year shows him to be a Grade 'A' jerk

I still like Conan - he can be a bit silly at times, but since I don't have cable anymore, I don't ever see his show - assuming he still has a show, I'm not even sure and I'm not about to start spending over $100 a month just to watch him

4) WHY doesn't anyone - and this article is a great example - ever mention FERGUSON?!?!?

Because he's the absolute worst late night talk show host in the history of the world. That farking bastard was actually on The Tonight Show last week. I almost smashed my TV I was so pissed off. Actually, that's not true. I decided to give him a chance and so I watched his interview and yes, I still think he is completely lacking a sense of humor and he is completely devoid of any entertainment value.

So there's that.

I'll watch a re-run of Letterman I've already seen before I'll watch Leno. Which makes me glad Kimmel moved to 11:35 so I have another option.

That's not accurate. Letterman is the only reason we've heard of Leno. He was a regular guest for years when he was still a great stand-up. Gleason and Groucho would've been good hosts, but wouldn't have had Johnny's longevity. They also both would have dominated the show. Newhart, on the other hand, would've been too dry, I think.

Oh, let me guess - you hate Conan too.

No, I hate him for what he did to Conan, and I'm over 40.

I don't understand this.  NBC is clearly to blame for the entire mess.  They wanted to put Leno out to pasture before he was ready to retire.  They basically said "You don't have to go home but you can't stay here."  So Leno started looking at other options and NBC freaked about the possibility that he'd end up on ABC or Fox opposite Conan.  The whole 10:00 thing was decent idea except that the affiliates freaked at the low-ish (better than what they're getting now) ratings and so NBC had to choose between the two.  I prefer Conan to Leno, but Jay isn't to blame for that mess.  NBC and their indecisiveness are.

This. While I still dislike Leno, I don't blame him as much as I do NBC

What don't you understand? Leno is absolutely to blame for that mess. If Leno hadn't wanted to come back to hosting the Tonight Show, NBC wouldn't have kicked Conan out.  Leno's 10 pm slot was a disaster for local news and, in turn, a disaster as a lead in to Conan. While NBC is at fault for giving Leno a contract that included a huge buyout to Leno, Leno is at fault for not going gracefully into retirement.

Jokes are never as funny the second time you tell them.

2013-03-22 01:44:08 AM
I hate Leno because I find him unfunny. Period. Not. Funny.

Hacky jokes, stolen bits, stolen "talent" (Stuttering John), and the only actual funny bits are crowd-sourced (Headlines) and all he does is smirk. (Although to be fair I'm not sure anyone crowd-sourced bits before him. So kudos for bringing lazy comedy into the mainstream)

Factor in the fact that he's a world-class prick who forced Carson into retirement, stole the gig from Letterman (WHILE EAVESDROPPING IN A G-D CLOSET), ruined NBC's prime-time schedule and ratings, and then farked Conan six ways from Sunday - what is there left to LIKE about this no talent hack?

"Oh, my Nana loves him!" - your Nana also liked Petticoat Junction and I Dream of Jeannie - that doesn't mean they weren't crap. There was just less competition. There's a reason so many talk shows exist now - more channels and the odd executive willing to gamble on actual talent and originality.

And on top of EVERYTHING else, Kimmel DESTROYED Leno on Leno's own show. Even Leno's AUDIENCE turned on him. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=joXYj2IoKXs

What was the joke?  Was it topical?  Just because the subject is old, doesn't mean that a joke can't be funny.  I'm guessing it more of a reference than a joke.  I'm not defending him, I don't even watch late night talk shows, but you gotta know your audience.  The "old urologist patients" who watch Leno probably loved it.

2013-03-22 03:04:35 AM
Remember where you heard this crazy thought first:

He'll go to CBS and replace Dave.

Dave wins: He wants his show to be a legacy show like The Tonight Show.  Jay is one of the few hosts that gives the show enough credibility.  Replace Dave with anyone else and it'll probably be gone in a few years.

Jay wins:  He obviously doesn't want to go yet and going to CBS would be the ultimate finger to NBC.  And it's pretty obvious that he's not the company man he used to be.

CBS wins: Leno brings in the ratings and he'll not only bring in the over 30 audience, he'll stop splitting that audience with Dave.

Affiliates win: With the #1 primetime lineup and the ratings champ in late night, the audience will hold over through the evening news which means higher ratings for the evening news where the affiliates really rake in advertising money (which they don't have to share with the network).  The advertisers hold a lot of sway, but it's second to the joint power of the affiliates.  Remember, it was the affiliates that really took down the "Jay Leno Show."

I ain't saying comedy is objective or that it is an absolute fact that Leno sucks, I said that most comedy fans don't like or respect him, unless you think the couple million people that watch him and go to his shows represent a majority of comedy/stand up fans.

I don't care if you like it, just saying my opinion. It's not like I've called anyone stupid or made fun of them for liking him, I just really think he sucks and I resent how he acted towards Conan (though NBC still gets most of my hate for that situation). Honestly, if NBC let Conan do the Tonight Show like he did Late Night then he would have done better. Why does NBC need to tone down a show that is shown at 11:30? How can they do that and then wonder why people under 40 aren't watching? Yeah, I digressed a bit, NBC sucks more than Leno.

andychrist420: gunther_bumpass: andychrist420: TheJoe03: Happy Hours: Get over it. If you don't think Leno is funny or if you think he's an asshole, don't watch his show.

Seems like you are the one that needs to "get over it". Accept that most comedy fans dislike Leno, no one's telling you to not watch the show anyway.  .

His sold out comedy shows around the country would beg to differ.

And chef boy-ar-dee is the best selling pasta. Clearly that denotes superior quality.

Quality is rarely a prerequisite for ratings success.

so, do you have a point to your ravings or what? You don't watch Leno, but he's clearly doing something great because he's the best, but he's only the best because the people watching him don't necessarily want the best, but there is a majority of those people out there tuning in, therefore, amongst people who aren't necessarily looking for the best entertainment (which are the majority of people) he is the best thing out there because so many undiscriminating people think so.
