leno should have stuck to just being a comic. he's a whole lot less funny when his teabagger tendencies slip out.

I don't understand the hate for Leno. Maybe that's because I'm over 30, but he's funnier than anyone else on late night talk shows with the possible exception of Conan O' Brien.

Oh, let me guess - you hate Conan too.

So don't watch him. I have no problem changing the channel when anyone named Craig of Jimmy comes on my TV and I don't endlessly complain about them even though they're about as funny as a Takashi Milke movie.

I also hate buzzfeed and I refuse to click on any more links going to their site.

Letterman has gone downhill, but back when he and Leno were both up for the Tonight Show gig, I think Letterman certainly had the edge.  Now, if I turn on my TV and Leno's doing the 'headlines' bit I'll watch, otherwise I'm not particularly entertained.

People still watch late night TV talk shows?

OK, OK, I'm actually not that guy. If I watch, it's usually Leno. He's a safe, known quantity, and people stick with what they're comfortable with. Edgy means taking people out of their comfort zone, and few people will subject themselves to that consistently when they're trying to relax and wind down after a long day at work.

I've never understood why a business would put the brakes on a demonstrably successful product. What, they want younger viewers? Why? Young people don't have money and they have little interest in shows that their grandparents would recognize and enjoy. The affluent Boomers have all the money, and they're clearly the dominant late-night demographic. Fallon won't pull them in like Leno will, and NBC will live to regret this decision. Again.

Boomers are aging out of the 25-54 demographic that advertisers target.  Many of them are reaching the age where they won't stay up late enough to watch Leno anyway.

People still watch broadcast television?

If it's not on Netflix, Amazon, VUDU, Crackle, or other online sources, then I don't see it. I certainly haven't watched a late night talk show since the 1990s. All they are is advertisement for the guest's current projects, anyway. They're like an hour-long commercial.

I walked out of Jay's show in Vegas about a year ago.  I want to like the guy because of his bike and car stuff, but I couldn't stomach the show.  He raced on stage and started firing away the not so funny jokes.  I remember thinking "how bout that airline food'.   Seemed like he was trying to get through the material as quick as possible so he could get to the tables or a hooker by 11 and back to LA by 4.

/Plus the Letterman and Conan stuff

I get the feeling Fallon is being put there to finally put the Tonight Show to pasture.  Times change, and the last thing anybody really wants to see is an hour-long commercial kissing the latest celebrity ass.  To say that Leno was Number 1 for 21 years is a bit of a joke that ignores the massive jump in communications that occurred a few years after Leno got the gig full-time that started the erosion of network TV's dominance that is still being felt today.

The days of staying up late to watch celebrities is fading.  And Comcast probably wants to start cleaning out the institutions of NBC so they can make it theirs.  And truth be told, they do have a valid point:  a lot of those institutions haven't been relevant for years.

Carson once had sex with Fano's mother....it was so impressive, I let him have sex me.

So there I am, three months pregnant and old Carson shoves me down the stairs. He bought me a drink after and bought a round of golf for me and Bob Hope.

You're going to have to convince Madison Avenue of that before anything changes.  They're still in the "target the young, old people don't count" mindset.  While I agree that this might not be fully appropriate in the current landscape, you have to admit that old people do cut back their buying in a lot of sectors even if they have the cash.  That cash may be going to something else like healthcare, and they may have clued out of doing stuff like updating the house and keeping up with the latest tech.

I'll top that.  I don't have TV, Computers, Internet, I live in a deep dark cave without any modern means of communication.  Like the Daleks, I run completely on Static Electricity and Hate.  For fun I crawl on my hands and knees to the top of a mountain, and fling myself off!  I land on ZeroCorpse's mother while yodeling Eine Kleine Nachtmusik through a dead harp seal.  I give her a cookie and go to bed.

I don't understand this.  NBC is clearly to blame for the entire mess.  They wanted to put Leno out to pasture before he was ready to retire.  They basically said "You don't have to go home but you can't stay here."  So Leno started looking at other options and NBC freaked about the possibility that he'd end up on ABC or Fox opposite Conan.  The whole 10:00 thing was decent idea except that the affiliates freaked at the low-ish (better than what they're getting now) ratings and so NBC had to choose between the two.  I prefer Conan to Leno, but Jay isn't to blame for that mess.  NBC and their indecisiveness are.

Not me. If it wasn't for the Fark.com threads about Leno every now and then, I would have no idea whether or not he is still around. When they came out with that "Team Coco" crapola a couple of years ago, for a while I thought it was some kind of hot chocolate ad campaign.

You want to know why Leno is hated and deserves to be hated?

It's really simple and it has nothing to do with Letterman or O'brien or anything else.

It has to do with the fact that he helped push Carson out of his show.

Carson didn't want to go, but he was a gentleman to the end and didn't jump to another network, he didn't talk crap about Leno after the fact, he simply smiled and slipped into retirement.

Though, he did reportedly regularly send Letterman jokes for him to use in his monologue.

Leno is a dick and a coward and he'll be remembered as a backstabber to the end of his days.

I liked Johnny Carson, but you know what? I NEVER got so involved in his personal life or his contract squabbles enough to hate Leno.

Maybe what you say is true. Carson is gone, dead, done. Get over it. If you don't think Leno is funny or if you think he's an asshole, don't watch his show.

I actually like Leno. He seems like a very nice guy and sometimes he makes me laugh. Of course I don't actually know him. Maybe he is an asshole who will stab people in the back just to get ahead.

And an interesting thing I just learned from Wikipedia. Johnny Carson only got his gig after "Bob Newhart, Jackie Gleason, Groucho Marx, and Joey Bishop all declined".

I'm not sure who Joey Bishop is - maybe I'm just ignorant - but Bob Newhart, Jackie Gleason and Groucho Marx were all much funnier than Johnny Carson could ever have hoped to be.

To the former: I am, as well, over 30 and have decided a long time ago, that Leno wasn't as funny once real competition came about.  Never cared for Letterman, but I liked Kimmel in his old stuff and I am lately enjoying his talk show.  No hate for Conan, he is just a little too silly for my taste.

To the later: This, but I don't watch NBC after 11 pm anymore.  Our local ABC news station is much better, which has played into why I started watching Kimmel.

I saw some of Leno's monologue once when I flipping channels many years ago. I was surprised by how sexual his jokes were, a la " Did you hear this? (Insert good-looking actress name) went camping last weekend... I wouldn't mind camping with her, if you know what I mean".

Cue audience laughter.

It was strange.

I disagree about Newhart, he is very funny but I don't see him really pulling off a 'host' position.  Jackie wouldn't even need a sidekick, but I am not sure if hosting would be his thing.  However, Groucho would've been amazing.  I think it would've been tough on the guest to somehow be more entertaining than him.  Carson introduced a lot of comedy talent to the masses, but Leno really doesn't like having anyone getting a chance to out perform him.  Even though Carson is the only reason we've heard of Leno.
