No shiat.  There wasn't a single hobbit in that film.

Wow, the gov't there seems preoccupied with movies lately. Must not have anything better to do, it seems.

I have a ten year old daughter, after she watched "Blind Side" and "Titanic", I had to explain to her the difference between "true" and "based on a true story". She understands now.  Why don't they?

Keep repeating "It's only a movie, it's only a movie..."

"It's touched a really raw nerve," Matthewman said. "We do seem in New Zealand to be oversensitive to how the rest of the world perceives us."

you mean when they remember you exist?

I understand they're upset but, so what? If we in the US got upset at every mean thing said about us and then passed legislation about it we would be doing that 24/7.

If I wrote a "fictional" movie that identified you personally, job, name and address, as a child molester but said "Hey, fiction! No harm, right?" would you be happy? Or would you realise that there are some, if not many, people who think it must be at least a bit true?

And even this article is unfair to the British while at the same time pointing out how unfair the movie was to the British, and Kiwi's. The quote "Yet those interviews also indicate that both countries considered it too risky to shelter the Americans for long. That left the Canadians shouldering the biggest risk by taking them in. " suggests the British sent the Americans away because it was too risky for them. In reality the British and Canadians recognised that the British compound was under direct threat of being overrun the same way the US one was and agreed that the Canadian residence would be better.

The Brits didn't consider it "too risky" for them, they considered it too risky for the hostages.

They're upset about a movie that mentioned that they didn't take in six fleeing Americans in a hostage crisis THIRTY YEARS AGO.

Is it true that the New Zealand embassy didn't hide the Americans? Yes.
Is it true that "Argo" mentioned this? Yes.
Is it true that all this happened IN 1979??? Yes.

So WTF, New Zealand? Did you want the movie to pretend your guys did something that didn't happen? Or talk more about your non-contribution in a movie about the American CIA and a bunch of filmmakers, which barely mentioned the massive risk taken by the Canadians? "Argo" wasn't about what everyone else didn't do, it was about what the film guys DID do. Make your own movie if you want to talk about what the Kiwis did or didn't do in 1979 ffs.

We actually don't care.

Seriously, I am not aware of a single person who gives a flying fark about this issue, or is even aware of the issue.  I don't know who this Professor Matthewman has been talking to, but I literally have not heard a single person comment at all about this.

In the past few weeks people have commented on the new Pope, the cricket, the drought, the cricket, and the cricket.  Not a mention of yet another self-aggrandizing historically inaccurate American movie.  Sorry, you just don't figure high in our daily lives.

Pretty much this.

There's maybe like one or two pathetic New Zealand radio show hosts mentioning it who are just trying to start a storm of controversy and get on the map.

But no one here is pissed off. This isn't even a farking talking point for even the most boring people.

They are pretty small potatos internationally so when they get slighted in a Major Hollywood movie (especailly when it is the exact opposite of the truth) it is a big deal.

at least that is what my frined Brett told me.

Agreed - up until that point I'd mostly bought the whole thing as a close telling of the real thing - the military vehicles chasing the plane dowen the runway though - at that point it became incredibly obvious that this was pretty much made up.

The closing montage of news footage cutting to scenes from the movie was pretty bold though - it seemed to be saying "look at how accurate everything is". When it turned out that everything was exaggerated or outright fabricated to make the US look better.

I really don't understand why people get so upset when movies "based on true stories" aren't actual true storeis. I mean it is not like the whole concept of "based on a true story" was invented by Hollywood. I mean one of the most famous writers in the history of the world is Shakespeare. But I don't  think I have ever heard anyone complain that the plays Richard III or Julius Caesar aren't historically accurate.

Yeah but like I said earlier - the closing sequence really portrays the whole thing as a meticulous representation of the actual events. They even use a Jimmy Carter voiceover.

Here it is

Meanwhile the people, and countries that actually undertook the risk of actually hiding the hostages and moving them around at that time are called out in the movie as turning them away.

Drama posing as an accurate representation is a crutch for a hollywood circle jerk of a movie.

Only a Canuck can manage that level of spittled poutrage for the movie. The kiwis and Brits have a legit gripe that they were portrayed as actively not helping, while I walked out of the movie thinking the Canadian embassy had some real heroes. I guess they can get senor spielbergo to do a Schindler's list level apotheosis of the Canadian caper.

Who am I white knighting?

I made no comment ont he content of the movie.  Just pointing out that if you think you can judge the size of the director's junk from hearing about it, and feel; it is important on what you think his junk size is you are obsessed with cocks.

And there is nothing wrong with, but don't kid your self about yoru obeseeion.  Ignoring it isn't going to help you handle it.

Apparently it's really one attention whore politician, no one's really mad. Canadians are throwing more of a fit, and that just means someone's pulse went up a little. That could have just been Affleck's beard.

Marketing and advertising a film as being a "true story" and that you are "working hard to make sure the facts are correct."  Then presenting 90 minutes of revisionist crap that flat out insults the very people who saved American lives at great risk to their own.  That, is the problem.

If you're going to say it's "based on a True story" you have an obligation to at least try.  With the exception of the events in the first 5 minutes of the film somewhat matching archived photos, the rest of it is entirely bullshiat fantasy.

Evidently you either are unaware of the conventions of Bollywood movies or you just really want to bone Jennifer Lawrence.

It was a fairly standard ROM com with a gimmick. Di niro had no arc to his character. What was the mpdm reason for first pursuing the lead? And getting secret meddling help from his mom? The preposterous dance number at the end with the three sheets to the wind character that is suddenly sober enough to dance perfectly enough to get the precise score needed to beat the old Jew that his dad owes money to? Yeah, not one clichéd moment there.
