Lemme see if I've got this right:  Some guy and another guy tweeted a link to an Onion article?  That is what actually happened?

Newsbusters and Subby, lemme help you out here.  When a news organization falls for an Onion article, that's (sort of) news.  When people on Twitter link to an Onion article, whether they say it's real or not, not only is it not news, it's completely and utterly uninteresting because thousands upon thousands of people do that same thing every single day.  Even if they're famous liberals, there's still no story here.

The most bizarre thing about this isn't how stupid and pointless and unnewsworthy this is, it's the fact that people who hate Michael Moore follow him on twitter.

When you have complete control over what you see, that'd be like filtering Fark so you only see posts from notorious trolls, to get you angry an... oh wait, that's the politics tab.

Presumably they're following him in the same way that Media Matters listens to Rush Limbaugh and Hannity. They're just waiting to hear something stupid so they can pounce on it.  Or rather, they're waiting to hear something even more stupid than usual.

Just for context, the Onion article.

"And teachers don't count." That's worthy of Dwight Schrute himself.

Believe me Mr. Canadian, it also makes me angry when people are stupid and ignorant...

I don't think Wilson even wrote the tweet.  He probably just clicked the Twitter button next to the article.  The number under the button indicates 2,000 total Twitter users did the same.  The NewsBusters author seems to have a basic misunderstanding of social media/internet integration post-2006.

That article is from almost a year ago.

Wait until they find out that there was an election in November 2012 - lot of Onion articles about that too.

What NB seems to be missing here is that the NRA is such a cartoonish organization that pretty much anything said about them is potentially possible.

Never mind, I get your point.  Fair enough.

For reference, here are the contents of Wilson's tweet:

NRA Sets 1,000 Killed In School Shooting As Amount It Would Take For Them To Reconsider Much Of Anything ... tmi.me/OEEzp
- RainnWilson (@rainnwilson) March 20, 2013

Tweets regularly have shortened URLs at the end, especially before Twitter added the feature that automatically creates shortened URLs and then overlays part of the original URL back onto the tweet.

To anyone who regularly uses Twitter, the above looks like an autopost, an API screw-up or bad copypasta.  To interpret it as trying to obfuscate The Onion connection or as misunderstanding the satire of the article is outright idiotic.

2013-03-21 05:28:29 PM
Confusing NRA statements with Onion articles is a pretty easy mistake to make. There is nothing ultrafark about it.

Given the genocides of the past century, and their use of child soldiers, I'm not at all doubting it's a stretch to say Assault Rifles have killed millions of children. Just not in the United States.

In comparison, the only thing an American child is going to kill with an assault rifle is a cheeto.

tenpoundsofcheese: and Biden's claim that Giffords was shot and mortally wounded

And to be fair to Biden, the kind of injury that was inflicted upon Giffords is typically fatal, if not immediately due to direct cerebral trauma and bleeding, then down the road from cerebral swelling, shock and infection. It has a low survival rate, and a very high morbidity rate.

Blah, blah, blah.
Rangel was talking about legislation in the US about assault rifles.
Context, how does it work?

If Rangel had actually mentioned assault rifles, then they might be germane to the topic at hand.

"We're talking about millions of kids dying - being shot down by assault weapons," he continued. "Were talking about handguns easier in the inner cities, to get these guns in the inner cities, than to get computers. This is not just a political issue, it's a moral issue..."

I typed this out months ago and have been itching to post it near the beginning of a gun thread.  However, I never had the time nor the luck to catch such a thread early on until just now.  So if you'll humor me, I'd like to get you guys' response:

"In a recent gun thread I asked a question that got a more heated reaction than even I had expected. However, I think that the way I presented it may have poisoned the well a little and caused people to think I was intending to be antagonistic or leading, which I wasn't.So, for the sake of encouraging a more civil conversation, I have formulated the same question into a hypothetical situation that I hope will be as bland and as much like a Pew poll as possible.

This is a question for gun owners.Your only task is to fill in the blank at the end of this statement. "Nothing" is a perfectly acceptable answer, and you will never be asked by The Name to explain or justify any answer you give.

The situation is as follows:

One item from your personal collection of shooting paraphernalia has been banned. This item can be a clip, a magazine, a sight, a silencer, a gun case, a gun rack, a type of ammo, an entire firearm, etc. -anything associated with guns, as large or small as you wish.Your reaction to the ban is roughly as follows: without feeling that your second amendment rights have been egregiously restricted, you turn in the item as required by law. This item is: ______

Remember, this is a hypothetical question for the sake of registering a reaction.  The real-world question of whether anything should be banned is irrelevant."

Thank you for your time
