Such a sad NCAA tournament this year w/my Purdue Boilermakers out. At least I can root for my second school UNC, if only half-heartedly.

Bucknell/Butler, man that's an interesting matchup, I give it to Butler on Brad Stevens being one of the best coaches in college basketball.

Yeah, I already switched to Butler-Bucknell. Got MSU as my bracket winner, though, so that's a nice sign.

Looks like Michigan State is going to run away with this first game. Leading by 15 with five minutes to go in the first half seems like a good place to be.

Michigan State seems underseeded as a #2 seed. That bracket is rough.

Butler should win this one fairly handily, if only they could score or had a decent point guard (Clarke is not a PG). Brad Stevens has this completely ridiculous record when he has multiple days to prepare.

I love how Syracuse didn't bother telling the world that Fab Melo didn't have grades and wouldn't be playing until AFTER the brackets were announced and they got a #1 seed last year. They've just been a dishonest program and such for a while.

meh. #1, #2. I know 2's have lost to 15's in the past, but after the first round seedings don't mean much. Gonzaga had a gaudy record, had some wins(mostly on neutral courts) against teams from major conferences, and finagled its way to a #1 seed . I think they're overrated as well and don't think they'll make the final four, but I can see why the committee gave it to them. No reason to get upset.

They were a 5-seed in 2010, so that wasn't as much of a shock. But if you didn't follow those years, I can see how you'd think it's been boring. No other team seeded lower than 5th made it in 2007, 08, 09, and 12 and those three consecutive years didn't have anybody lower than 3rd, including 2008 which had all four #1s.

Gonzaga will be helped if Wichita State beats Pittsburgh right now. Not that Pitt is that much better (it's an 8-9 game for a reason), but Pitt has the type of physical personnel that has given the 'Zags some trouble this year.

I think they'll crack under the pressure. Playing the part of plucky underdog is one thing, but being Goliath is something entirely different, especially when your guards look like high school freshmen. Could see them going out in the 2nd round, and if not then, the sweet sixteen.

Get used to it, the tourney is only going to get bigger. The next generation will only hear stories about a 64 team tournament while they watch the first round game between a #1 seed and a #32 seed. Originally a first round win meant you qualified for the Final Four.

And then in January they'll also get to enjoy watching Alabama take on Western Kentucky in the 32 team football playoff.

I bet that changes soon. With the Catholic 7 splitting off from the Big East, they're going to add a new automatic bid. The NCAA is loathe to decrease the number of at-large bids, so we're going to see at least two more teams added next year unless conference realignment ends up eliminating a conference (which is totally possible since the Catholic 7 are going to take Creighton, Butler, and Xavier as well). Most likely, they'll expand to a 16-team play-in round within a few years. At that point, I think "First Round" will be a legitimate title.

Yeah they made the Final Four the season before. However, Butler has a history of advancing to the Sweet Sixteen which would be the equivalent of winning the regional in the old single class tourney. The 52-53 team won the school's first regional title. And unlike Butler, Milan has actually won something.

Butler has, like, 1 1/2 players who can actually score the basketball. Kind of amazing given the state's full of high schoolers who can score. Since Clarke and maybe Dunham are their only scorers and they only score from outside, teams pretty much smother them. The rest is a struggle.

Do you watch sports? Every one of these terms has value.

'High basketball IQ' -- some smart people are not smart ball players - they do not know where to position themselves, do not know how to rotate, or do little things like box out properly. Some players are naturally intelligent in game terms, some learn.

'he's long' -- you may realize that some people have longer arms than others, right? Combined with height, this can be especially difficult to deal with for an offensive player.

'first down... and more!' -- I don't understand the disgust with this. Play-by-play guys call the action live, when it is unclear whether a play will be stopped. This call usually happens when a back breaks a tackle and is able to bust free.

'really important third down' -- depending on time of game, position on the field, and potentially how many yards are needed for the down... a third down can easily be much more important in a game. Keeping a drive alive with 5mins left to go is hardly of the same middling magnitude as one early in the game, right?

Perfect brackets remaining in ESPN Tournament Challenge (~8.14 million entries) after game concludes:

Michigan State over Valpo -7,806,620
Butler over Bucknell - 6,321,459

Supes: After the result of the MSU-Valpo game, still 7,806,621 perfect brackets on ESPN Tournament Challenge. Will update after Butler/Bucknell finishes....

FWIW, I've lost my old records, but I have my records from the past two tourneys. In both '11 and '12, the last perfect brackets were destroyed sometime Friday afternoon/evening (I think 27-0 and 23-0). I THINK someone finished the first round intact a number of years ago (and then it all went to hell). Also, be sure to check CBS and Yahoo, but the final perfect bracket has almost always been ESPN just because they have so many more.

Go Lobos!!!

just for the hell of it I picked them to win it all. They are in the easiest division this year and the only real challenge is Ohio St. and Pitt. This is a great year to make a run to the Final Four.

They've broken my heart so many times, but this year feels different. Outstanding D all year (barring 2-3 games), and their offense is finally clicking in the last few weeks.

Agreed, when they're on, they can beat anyone, but they're so up and down this year. That, however, is much better than in previous years though when they'd go into halftime up pretty good and just blow the second half all the time. I hope they make the Elite 8 (well, really hope they win it all, of course), but have a feeling Sweet 16 will be the end for them.

Pomeroy actually has them ranked eighth, with the 9th best offensive and the 17th best defense. They only had one bad loss, the rest all came to tournament teams with four of their eight losses coming to Michigan, Marquette, and Louisville. They also had wins over Syracuse and Georgetown, though their nonconference schedule was atrocious.

I don't think that's true. Pitt is a very flawed team, that's the reason they're an 8 seed. I have seen lots of people say Pitt matches up better with Gonzaga, which I believe.

This is Pitt every year.
This is them choking every year because the only play the same good teams every year. Big East teams they know so they're bound to win a few.

I've ignored the Pitt hype every year for the past 3 years & it's done me good in bracket pools. Sadly they were only an 8 seed this year. No hype to go deep at all.

...My referee rage makes me blind. I farking hate referees.

Lol - A player (Preacher's son actually) on my High School basketball team got involved in a shoving match with an opposing player who had cheapshotted him - elbow to the jaw. Ref stepped up to him from behind, and pinned both his arms; so the other player obligingly punched him in the face three or four times.

Not knowing it was a ref holding his arms, he blindly spun and punched the ref in the face - laid him out.

doh.

Refs refused to call any of our games - would have forced us to forfeit the rest of the season - unless our guy was suspended from play for the rest of the season... (other team's puncher lost three games iirc).

/ref actually tried to get him charged with assault. It's been 35 years and it still jumps my blood pressure.

That whole "You need to be a subscriber" thing all the online TV things have been trying is the dumbest thing ever to me. I'm not a cable subscriber, but I'm going to call up my local provider and drop $200 a month, just so I can watch it online.

Just let me drop $15 for access to the tournament. I want to give you money for this access.

I agree. The other thing is, you could easily share a username/password as long as someone trusts that you won't sign them up for all the movie and pay-per-view channels, etc.

Don't even get me started about DirecTV packages all major sports leagues and then sells them back to you at a crazy cost (Fox Sports Detroit, for example, I get as a channel but all the games on it are blacked out).

LonghornRob: Davidson is on a 17 game winning streak and Marquette is overseeded. Seemed like a fun upset to pick and root for.

Bill Connelly at SB Nation looked at the last ten years and found the four factors that were most closely correlated with a top three seed being upset early (first round for 3-seeds, first or second round for 1 or 2-seeds). They were:

Ranked worse than 70th in non-conference strength of schedule
Ranked worse than 10th in defensive efficiency
Ranked worse than 10th in offensive efficiency
Had a difference of at least 20 spots between their offensive and defensive efficiencies.

Marquette is the only top three seed to fit all four of those criteria (145th in NCSOS, 18th in offensive efficiency and 49th in defensive efficiency).

He also found two factors that were closely correlated with a 13 or lower seed winning in the first round:

Ranked worse than 75th in Pomeroy's luck rankings
Had a difference of no more than 70 spots between their offensive and defensive rankings AND ranked no worse than 120th in defensive efficiency.

Davidson fits both of those criteria.

Obviously, it's no guarantee, but it certainly makes Marquette the most glaringly obvious of the top three seeds to fall.

Don't know if it's tied to cable plans, but the trick with Chrome is to just watch in incognito mode, then when it kicks you off after 4 hours, just closer the entire incognito browser (not just the tab), re-open an incognito browser, and happily resume.

Someday it'll happen, a 1 seed will lose. A largely ignored side-effect of the opening round games is the increased quality of low seeds. The 4 auto qualifiers who were in the play-in games would normally have been the 16 seeds. Now since 2 of them are eliminated early, 2 of the teams that would have been 15 seeds in the old format are bumped down to 16.

The more play-in games are added, the higher quality opponents 1 seeds will face. It's really only a matter of time till one of them finally loses.

Preaching to the choir, dude. I'm in Milwaukee. Marquette is in Milwaukee. For the last few years, all of their games have been on TruTV, and most of Wisconsin's games have been too. It's infuriating.

Bleh.

2013-03-21 05:35:15 PM

Supes: jayhawk88: 1% of Yahoo brackets have Southern beating Gonzaga.

That, and a lot of the conference tournaments keep get pushed back earlier and earlier for TV reasons. Imagine if a Missouri Valley team ever has a breakout year and gets a #1 seed. They might be in a position where they have 11 or 12 days between their last game and first round game, whereas their #16 opponent maybe just played and won two days ago. Could be a factor at least.

Oh yeah that is a huge factor. If you are streaking coming into the the tournament, you don't want to have over a week of down time between games. That will kill your momentum.

I almost had Davidson on both of my brackets. I split it up cause I figured that was too big an upset to pick.

2013-03-21 05:48:11 PM
Miami is just going to destroy the bottom half of that bracket. They could probably hold both Butler or Marquette to under 40.

Southern better pull this off to make up for all the chalk, lol.

2013-03-21 05:48:35 PM
Well that was disappointing. Though at least we have two other games going on right now that are on upset watch. Anyway, perfect brackets remaining in ESPN Tournament Challenge (of ~8.14 million entries), after:

Michigan State over Valpapraiso - 7,806,620
Butler over Bucknell - 6,321,459
Wichita St. over Pittsburgh - 1,918,510
Saint Louis over New Mexico St. - 1,699,018
Memphis over Saint Mary's - 1,362,660
Marquette over Davidson - 1,182,157

For the last three years, I've been employing the "everyone in the Big East is overrated and none of them make it to the Elite Eight" strategy. I've done pretty well. I wanted to take Marquette to lose against Davidson, but figured it would be safer to have them knocked out the next round or against Miami.

Good to know. As a Lobo fan, I'm pulling for them against Mizzou tonight. Just curious about the in-state rivalry.

Hornung and Iverson are beastly on the glass, but they could really use Green at 100%

Yeah, the rivalry is a bit muted since they're in different conferences. I'd say if CU has an eye on someone it'd be Arizona.

I'm liking CU's chances tomorrow. Colorado has length over Illinois -- as most Illinois women will attest. huh huh huh

Losing as a one seed will complete the Gonzaga fail that has happened every year since their one dream run. Those bastards had everybody picking them as a darkhorse to make a similar run and they disappointed every single goddamn year.

They'll destroy everyone's bracket today and then next year, when nobody believes in them, they'll go to the elite 8 as a 14 seed.

jayhawk88: Why do I ever think Oklahoma State is capable of showing up in the tournament? Gets me every damn year.

I think that was easily the most popular 12 over 5 pick this year. Which is funny, because OkState has perhaps the most talented team in the tourney. Smart is a top 5 pick pretty much by consensus, and Brown and Nash are both going in the late 1st/early 2nd on most mock drafts I've seen. But zero people trusted them, and everyone thought Oregon would feel slighted and motivated.

/I picked Oregon in both brackets.
//Akron over VCU was also popular as a 12/5 upset. If you picked this, know that Akron is missing it's top player, PG Abreu, due to suspension. And you will likely regret this
///And if you picked UNLV to lose to Cal... well... longshots happen, right?

Well, Southern decided to play with our hopes and dreams until the final minutes. Fun game, but too bad they couldn't pull off the miracle. Perfect brackets remaining in ESPN Tournament Challenge (of ~8.14 million entries), after:

Michigan State over Valpapraiso - 7,806,620
Butler over Bucknell - 6,321,459
Wichita St. over Pittsburgh - 1,918,510
Saint Louis over New Mexico St. - 1,699,018
Memphis over Saint Mary's - 1,362,660
Marquette over Davidson - 1,182,157
Gonzaga over Southern - 1,176,957

Almost in the 6 digits, and this number will almost certainly be cut at least half if Oregon closes their game out.

300K+ people picked Valparaiso?

I saw Wichita State as being a very good team, but that's in the context watching the MVC. I basically figured that the conference itself was fairly weak and that they'd get run out of the tournament on a rail.

Now, I have a little bit of hope for my Bluejays, even though I'm well aware that circular logic doesn't translate into actual performance (see Creighton getting taken behind the woodshed at St. Mary's about a month ago).

Anyway, I wish the Shockers well.

I think Creighton has a run in them. They shoot the ball better than almost anyone in D1, McDermott is an NBA level talent who can score inside and out and go for 30+ on any given night, they rebound on the defensive end well and their guard play is good enough that it won't be a liability against most teams.

I had them getting passed Duke and almost put them past Michigan State, but just couldn't bring myself to pick against Izzo with a good team. If Creighton would have been put in the South or West I might have thought about Final Four.

Pitino was a master at dominating an even slightly weaker team. Just crush their spirit.
However while at UK he was below 20% in games decided by less than 5 points. Actually got down to 15% once.
NBA helped. He's still weak in close games as a coach.

bionicjoe: mitchcumstein1: Louisville is going to hammer these folks.

Pitino was a master at dominating an even slightly weaker team. Just crush their spirit.
However while at UK he was below 20% in games decided by less than 5 points. Actually got down to 15% once.
NBA helped. He's still weak in close games as a coach.

They didn't have many close games once he got them rolling at Kentucky.

Congrats, you're in the top 5.5%!

I just did the math, and if there's a similar rate of 5.5% perfect brackets for the evening games, we'll have about 25,000 still perfect overall. Which seems like a huge number till you remember that's only 0.3%,

I picked Colorado State over Missouri.

Either I've made one of the dumbest picks in the tournament, or I have given myself a big advantage in my bracket.

jayhawk88: KiwDaWabbit: Now, I have a little bit of hope for my Bluejays, even though I'm well aware that circular logic doesn't translate into actual performance (see Creighton getting taken behind the woodshed at St. Mary's about a month ago).

Yeah, there's no doubt that they have a pretty good up side, but I'm pretty worried about that Cincinnati defense. When they're on, they're on, but they're a bit on the inconsistent side in my view. I kind of feel like they could play from behind by double digits for 75% of tomorrow's game only to make the score look respectable before they're one and done or that they could come within a possession of reaching the Elite Eight, somewhat like you were saying.

jayhawk88:

And I agree that you don't bet against Izzo when he has a good team. In that region, I think it comes down to Michigan State and Louisville (unless St. Louis somehow surprises them).

A valid point.
80 against UT....in the first half. I still miss the 96 team. Underrated on the list of all-time great teams.

K.C. is probably my favoritest farker who I will never put in my favorites list, because to make his posts show up in color and stand out would ruin the fun.

Still at school (farking math team event), so I can't get on ESPN's fantasy site, but on Yahoo I've got 7/8 and there are 173K perfect brackets ahead of me.

BTW, robsul82, did you see that BEST IN THE WORLD is back in net and wasted no time in setting more records with his stunning offensive prowess?

Reason #4849543798453 I can't stand corporate America.
All the NCAA tournament floors re-branded with NCAA logos, black lines, and blue letters so they're all the same.
Part of the fun was watching all the different teams on different floors. Wildcats vs. Wildcats on a 3rd Wildcats' floor. Sycamores vs. Salukis on the Sooners' floor.

Assholes.

mitchcumstein1: They only had like 19 NBA players on that team, yeah, they were solid.

Please, it was only 9 players, and Wayne Turner and Jeff Sheppard didn't even last a year in the NBA!

But yeah.... a couple other teams had around 5 NBA players, sometimes plus a marginal player (2007 Florida, 1999 Duke, 2009 Carolina, 2004 UConn). But that UK team was crazy in they had 7 players who ended up having real NBA careers, plus 2 more who at least made it to the league briefly.

According to some sports writer's tweet, a Belmont player was told that he couldn't sit with his teammates if he didn't pour his Powerade into an official NCAA Gatorade bottle. Second-hand info, but I'll support it because it feeds my existing opinion of the NCAA.

oh that's for sure a true story. never fark with the corporate sponsorship. it's one thing if the ncaa wants to brand itself as the owners of ugly ass black and blue trimmed courts, but players better not fark with the money flowing to the ncaa. the old men in charge would be very upset. might be a major violation and suspension for life.

Agreed.
The 1992 Olympic Dream Team guys were told what to do because most were Nike sponsored, but Reebok had the Olympic deal.
No telling what an NCAA suit would tell a NCAA athlete/indentured servant.

They require people in the press room to pour their drinks into NCAA-approved cups.

Both of my brackets were filled out while drunk, and one of them is 7/8 so far and doing well for the current 4 games. But I have Gonzaga going to the national championship (they were a #1 seed!) which apparently isn't too likely.

The other bracket is doing pretty bad.

Gators win it all in both!
