Is that really what he said? For the long time, the argument on the left was that conservatives against gay marriage should remember that they aren't being forced to participate in one. Now he's basically saying the same thing. Seems to me that he just knows which way the wind is blowing.

"Don't like gay marriage? Don't have one."

FloydA: Can someone translate that from idiot to English?  Does he really not know the difference between optional and mandatory?

From what I see of conservative opinions, no, he probably doesn't.  To them, everything is either mandatory or banned, like abortion (not banned, therefore mandatory), school prayer (not mandatory, therefore banned), and gay marriage (if un-banned, will then necessarily be mandatory).  They don't know how to think for themselves or make their own decisions, so just assume that all laws are telling them how to live their lives rather than giving them options as to how to choose to live their lives.

But therein lies the problem.... Theocratic statists don't like freedom. Saxby, and the rest of the GOP schmucks standing in the way of civil rights again, use freedom as a rhetorical tool with their words and stomp all over freedom as a real principle with their actions.

Isakson can be hit or miss (he is actually responsible for the section of the PPACA that was going to allow for Medicare coverage of living will consultations but scattered when that was removed from the bill as "death panels") but Chambliss is someone I genuinely find to be a terrible person for his behavior. Even in those situations where he's right for all the wrong reasons (he's done some pushing against executive secrecy on matters of national security after being all for empowering Bush) I can't even give him partial credit just based on his campaign against Max Cleland (a triple amputee Vietnam vet who was also a big supporter of the War on Terror, yet still got smeared as weak on Defense.)

FTFY, Senator.

He doesn't want gays to marry or to be recognized as normal for the same reason the rest of the Republican Threes don't.  If being gay is OK, then kids growing up as threes or higher will be OK and out and grow up with relatively normal behavior & relationship patterns.  That means very few people on the other side of that lovely little waist-high hole...

Well, you could blame subby for being a lazy Farker by not linking to TOFA, or praise him for figuring out that some sources are more equal than others. After all, someone has to pay for Drew's liquor bill.

Today's "journalism" is basically ten people linking to the same story, but adding nothing of value to the coverage by actually reporting, or even adding context. It's all about volume and "Likes"; quality only comes into the discussion as an afterthought and is quickly dismissed because it's time to go check out the new truck that serves North Korean-style kimchee.

I'm finding myself confused by this.

Is he saying that since he's not gay, he won't be marrying a man ("I'm not gay, so I'm not going to marry one." [which makes no sense given the context]) or does he mean that since he's not gay he won't be working to pass legislation that allows homosexuals to marry ("I'm not gay, so I'm not going to marry one." [which makes more sense given the context])?

I'm not saying you're wrong about how the folks in GA on the whole feel about it... but I'm saying he's ALSO supposed to be representing all the other folks in GA too. As a federal legislator he should in no way be curtailing the rights of minorities just because the majority want it. Same as with any other civil rights struggle of the past.

He's actually there to represent ALL Georgians, not just those who want theocracy or the oppression of minority groups based on their farked up interpretation of religious teachings.

Then why should men in the GOP care about abortion? They can't get pregnant or have an abortion.

Cletus C.: DammitIForgotMyLogin: He's not a woman either, but that didn't stop him marrying one of them

Brilliant.

On another note, this is the second political story in a row where a TPM aggregation of another site's story has been greenlit. Good for TPM, not so good for the people who actually did the reporting.

And one little click-through was all it would have taken for the correct link.

Bermuda59: Then why should men in the GOP care about abortion? They can't get pregnant or have an abortion.

Right, which means they'll never need to have one, so why should anyone else have access to them either?

I've been planning my wedding and when I told my mom that I would prefer to work with vendors that were LGBT friendly or have openly worked with gay clientele (we're in NoVA but our nearby neighbors, Maryland and DC, are pro gay marriage) her reaction to that was "Why? You're not gay."

It's nice to get some support from the straight side. I mean, I'm not black or a woman, but I surely wouldn't patronize a business that discriminated against either group. Ultimately though, it's selfish of me... I just don't want to be surrounded by dicks, bigots, and sexists, regardless of whether or not they're fans of me.

The problem, Saxby, is your complete lack of empathy, right up to the moment the balls hit your chin.
Just like Portman.
The balls hit his chin, and then he Got It.
You have to lookk beyong where you are right now.
See the balls coming.
And stop sucking before they hit your chin.
That is wisdom.
That is representing your constituents.
That, Saxby, is Good Government.

Lord_Baull: George Walker Bush: 50% of kids being born to single mothers. Let's destroy the family unit completely. Obama will provide.

Troll aside, how will gay marriage keep heterosexuals from marrying eachother?
b) If you're concerned about single motherhood, perhaps we should expand sex education beyond abstinence-only and distribute free condoms. Or even stop limiting abortion. Do you think that will help?

Lets cut every newborns' neck with a pair of scissors. That will make up for the loss of humanity. So long as we stress F***ING is the most important part of life.

So does this mean that he thinks he's going to have to "marry one" when gay marriage is legal?

Why does it matter if he is gay or not? If a person is AMERICAN they deserve to be treated like the rest of AMERICANS. It is the simplest of things to understand. I literally taught it to my dog.

Me to Hudson (my dog): "Listen Hudson! Eyes up here! This is a human. We don't bite any humans no matter what!"

And since then, my dog has treated all humans the same. Ta da!

George Walker Bush:
Unless it's a child, then it has no rights until 18 and screwed up.

Do you think children and teenagers have the critical thinking skills and experience necessary to sign contracts, drink alcohol, smoke cigarettes, fight in wars and vote on laws that effect all of us? I do not.

Remember, kids - Republicans can't walk a mile in your shoes. They have to be personally involved, invested, or investigated before they can even consider laws for you. Republicans can only consider legalizing gay marriage, apparently, if either they're gay or their kids are gay. Republicans can only consider legalizing abortion, apparently, if either they're pregnant or they've inconveniently knocked somebody else up. And so on, and so on.

Unless, of course, you're a wealthy right-wing conservative white male. At that point, they're pretty sure they can help you, because, hey, they know what you're going through.

skullkrusher: thurstonxhowell: It's interesting. He could have said virtually the same thing in order to voice his support for gay marriage.

"I'm not gay, so I'm not going to marry one."
"Don't like gay marriage? Don't have one."

What's the difference between these two expressions, really? Isn't the one just the first person version of the other? Yet, apparently, Saxby used his version to say he does not support gay marriage.

Interesting.

First one is quite literally saying "I don't favor gay marriage because I am not gay and it doesn't not affect me therefore I don't care but I care enough to actively oppose it because."

I gots mine!

As an active duty vet/current Air National Guardsman married to an active duty airman living in Georgia, I have a lot of military friends. It's been clear to me for a long time that the GOP's idea of "supporting the troops" is throwing money at defense contractors and voting to shaft flesh and blood troops. I studiously avoid politics with people I otherwise really enjoy knowing, but couldn't help but share the Congressional Report Card done by the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America in 2010 (on my phone, not even gonna try to link). Across the board, Republicans have a dismal record concerning any veteran related issues. I think Chambliss got a D. I hope they publish an updated one soon. It was eye opening to a couple military types I know who just assumed that the GOP cared about them. A couple others tried to make excuses like "Well there was probably pork buried in it! They probably had a good reason to shoot down an increase in VA funding for traumatic brain injury!"

Sadly, the person that picks up that MF's seat will likely be much worse (see: Paul Broun, Karen Handel, Phil Gingrey etc.).

I'm not Jewish, so I'm completely apathetic to The Holocaust.

I'm not black, so I don't give a crap about issues involving slavery.

I'm not a child, so I don't care about child sexual abuse.

I'm not a human being, so I don't care about human rights.

What he's saying is that he's an insular sociopath who thinks his type should run things and everyone else should go shut the hell up.

One day, far in the future, we'll learn to recognize authoritarians and not vote for them. Today is not that day.

Saxby Chambliss? Chambliss? Sounds familiar. Didn't the Insidious Dr. Fu Manchu kill him before Nayland Smith and his dumb chums could save him?

Mind you, Dr. Fu kills everybody before the good guys can rescue them. Being a friend of the good guys in a Fu Manchu novel is worse luck than being a friend or relation of Jessica Fletcher when Jessica comes to visit. It's a good thing our heroes have lots of colleagues and friends. They'd run out in one episode if they didn't have plenty more to spare.

Jinx!
