I was hoping it might be based on the excellent book by Robert Harris, but it appears that is not so.  That's too bad.  I often thought that Harris' book would translate well to film.

Ha, no- that's based on the Edward "It was a dark and stormy night" Bulwer-Lytton novel.

But what about a love triangle? A film like this clearly needs a love triangle.

Gah!  So it is. Harris is about the guy who builds the aqueduct, no?

Yes. Excellent book, which I too would like to see in movie form. According to Wikipedia Roman Polanski was going to direct an adaptation (he reportedly wanted Orlando Bloom and Scarlet Johansson for the leads) but the Screen Actors Guild strike forced the cancellation of production.

I'm unclear here. Should we flee the volcano's eruption in a leisurely, lackadaisical fashion? I mean, it's not like we're on some sort of schedule, right?

Who gets to play Pliny the Elder?

Also, has anyone here ever been to Pompeii or Herculaneum?  You built your freaking cities downhill from a live volcano, you imbeciles.  I mean, the volcano is right there, you can't miss it.

The soil around volcanoes is pretty fertile, if historical eruptions are infrequent or minor, people figure, what's the worst that could happen?

I believe the more apt phrase might be "it can't miss you."

I've been there, and it's pretty awesome.

Scientific understanding was pretty crude back in Roman times, and most of the locals had never even heard of a volcano... and had zero clue they were next to one. A well-educated man like Pliny knew of "fire-mountains" but your average Jovus Schmovus had no idea.

The ones who have no farking excuse at all are the million or so people living on the slopes of Vesuvius right farking now. As we speak. That's a monumental disaster guaranteed to happen, someday.

The cultural relevance of 24 has passed. It was an awesome show in its heyday, and I did some episode marathons with my roomies, but nowadays it'd be as lame as an X-Files movie.

Despite the last one sucking, I think an X-Files movie would be awesome.
