It amazes me that people want to go on these boats. Save up a load of money > get on boat > spend 2 weeks being able to shiat through the eye of a needle :\

Wow, they are just all manner of f-d up. I haven't check their CUSIP lately but I bet they are being shorted on the street.

FTFA: The ship is now set to return to service June 3, meaning an additional 10 cruises will be canceled. Guests on the affected voyages will receive a full refund, reimbursement for non-refundable transportation costs and a 25 percent discount on a future four- to five-day cruise.

Well, sure, who wouldn't want to go right back and do it again? Heck, it's 25% off, we can't lose!

They had to cancel cruises? There are still people dumb enough to book a cruise with them? I really need to get into a business that cashes in on stupid people. I'm missing the boat!

At least TFA says they've wised up and are fixing it so the toilets still work if the ship is on emergency power.

Never been on cruise, boss' Christmas "bonus" was a note saying he'd pay for $1000.00 toward a cruise.
Spouse and I booked cruise.
On the Triumph. We see this poop cruise happen on the news, towed to port, announced they'd resume cruises on boat in April.
Our scheduled cruise is in May. We don't cancel -- yet.
Reading forums, realize you have to cancel outside of 68 days (or something) to get all money back from deposit.
I'm waiting for news that cruise in May gets cancelled, so we would get a nice discount on future cruise instead.
Can't wait for cancellation news, cancel cruise two weeks ago.
Hear cancellation news, news about discount, but discount applied to another cruise, but on same damn ship.
Spouse and I happy we cancelled too early to get discount, no longer care about farking discount.

Upshot: Out of curiosity, after cancellation, used different browser/machine to rebook same cruise. Triumph was 99% full.
I guess people thought that shiat couldn't happen again.

Triumph should Fight the good fight every moment. Every minute every day. Fight the good fight every moment. It's his only way.

Carnival: Yes, yes it is.

So the ship will be out of service for about 540k bowel movements, assuming full complement of passengers and crew of 3858, two BMs per day, an cruise length of 7 days and 10 total cruises being canceled.

Walmart Cuise Line? Dinner is served being served on the Food Court Deck. Tonights specials include, Pizza Hut, McDonalds, Wendy's, Chick-Fil-A (no filthy God-hating gays please) and for those who want international fare, Panda Express, in honor of the Chinese slave laborers who made this cruise possible. Lower standards everyday!

Who has two BMs a day? If anything people tend to get constipated when they travel, unless they're going to India.

You kid, but I bet that would be a profitable cruise line.

Get an old freighter, build a Holiday Inn on the deck, give it a nice paint job, hire a comedian for the lounge and serve fast food.  Keep the prices super cheap and you will have to build thousands of ships to keep up with demand.

Step 1: Spend all your money on tacky interior furnishings, wave pools, etc., while cramming as many closet sized cabins as possible into the ship.

Step 2: Spend as little as possible on backup/safety systems and crew training.

Step 3: Profit!

Cruising is still pretty safe overall, but anyone who'd go on Carnival by choice deserves whatever they may get.

I'm guessing "spritz with some Febreze."

We're talking about an industry that would register in North Korea if it meant saving ten cents on taxes, charges you for every conceivable amenity down to the napkins (at prices that make ballpark food look reasonable), pays its largely third-world staff starvation wages (when it remembers to pay them at all), and grudgingly compensates the passengers who sat around in their own poop with bus fare home and a discount on the next poop-cruise.

Now they've got a multiple-cruise hole in their profit margins? You'll be lucky if they don't charge you extra for any poop that gets left behind in your room.

/and I say this as someone who  likes the idea of spending a week getting drunk off my ass with 3,000 other equally tacky, awful people on a floating tourist trap

If the norovirus was "running" amok onboard, 2 per day would be the low-ball estimate.

Good. I hope they go under, the foreign, tax evading, debt avoiding, bastards.

There are some people who just don't like ships, or being at sea. I don't happen to be one of them, and cruises are among my favorite ways to spend vacation. 24 hour room service, all you can eat food (that's better than most restaurants), and there are on average about 5 single women for every single man. I spend each day in a different tropical paradise, and spend my nights getting drunk and farking all those single ladies. People like to complain about the small cabins, but I only really use it to sleep, shower, change clothes, and fark.

Obviously people suffering from Thalassophobia  or Social Aniexty Disorder would see things quiet differently, but most people enjoy cruises as long as they don't have unrealistic expectations. I used to encourage people to take cruises, but I have basically stopped doing that. If more people start cruising, it will just just raise the price. Less than 5% of Americans have taken a cruise, and I like it that way. Cruise ships always sail fully booked, so the fewer people that cruise, the better it is for me.

What makes Americans think that foreign corporations should have to pay taxes to the US? What if foreign countries started taxing US corporations? I don't know if Americans simply don't realize that Carnival PLC is a British company, or if they just think the entire world should pay taxes to the US.

That's great, but Carnival does business in the USA, makes almost 2 billion dollars a year in profit, largely from United States passengers, the vast majority of its ships home port in US cities, and btw Carnival is based in Doral, Florida and is a cross-border DLC and is therefore both British and American.

So, yeah, it should pay taxes to the US.

Yum, the parent company of KFC and Taco Bell does more business in China than the US. So should the Yum corporation pay income tax to China as well as the US? Do you want to send a percentage of the profits from your local KFC to China? You are correct that Carnival is a dual-listed corporation, which is why they pay any US taxes at all. However, it is disingenous to express their US tax rate using the entire corporation's profit, since their primary holding company is listed on the London exchange, and not in the US.

Even China allows 100% of corporate profits to be repatriated to a corporation's home after the establishment of a reserve fund. If the US started shutting off foreign companies by double taxing them, what would keep other countries from doing the same to US companies?  US companies make far more money doing business in other countries than foreign companies make in the US. If the US adopted a tax strategy like you propose, US corporations would be the biggest losers.

You really want to fark with them, make them register their ships in the United States. Newborn kittens are tougher than Panamanian labor laws and Bahamian safety inspections. But then, what could possibly go wrong?

Out of all the cruise ships operating in American ports, guess how many are registered there?

This many.
