I was wondering what he was up to these days. I've always been a fan of his work.

When I was in art school though, most of the kids would rag on him incessantly for being a sellout. The same "artists" who were clamoring over each other for jobs at Disney and various video game companies. I never had the heart to explain the rampant hypocrisy to them.

Rule of thumb is, "was I the *only* one to see this?" and "No, so shut the f*ck up about this old news, gramps..."

I hope that I've helped, but not too much.

I really hate Shepard Fairey.

His art sucks, sure, but when an exhibition of his stuff came to my town once upon a time every square inch of the city in a 10 mile radius around the university where it was being held was just farked up with graffiti. It cost a shiat load of money to fix, and Fairey just thought it was "cool". Because "cool" is apparently having your city coated in advertisements for t-shirts, I guess.

That's kinda his shtick. If you pick up his book he shows a lot of the original posters and designs that he hijacks for his pieces.

So he's an artist, then.

Wasn't that supposed to mean something along the lines of lesser artists only borrowing the image they see, but great artists stealing the beauty of a scene itself from right before their eyes?

Pretty much.  I haven't found one in the last 20 years that can make a clay ashtray or "paint something that looks like it" outside of a Michael Bay movie and a room full of SGIs.  Most are better off gluing watches back together to sell on etsy to steampunks and let the SGIs mine bitcoins lol.  It seems to be a problem in the community with maintaining edginess and street cred probably relating back to their own class issues with born privelege and sitch.  Ya know how it goes: date a black guy with dreads and then be gay for a couple of years only to shelve it all to take back up smoking and raising chickens and koi in a loft in Manhattan.  What a woild what a woild :)
Cheers
