(Animal Rescuers)   I already posted one charity thread today, and I don't want to push my luck, but I just found out that a friend's store was broken into last night and all the donations she'd been collecting for an animal shelter were stolen. DIT   (ruffliferescue.net) divider line 44

My friend owns a candy store. She's really into helping animals so next to the register she keeps a big glass jar for donations to a local shelter. Every time I shop there I ask her to just throw my change in the jar, and I know a lot of other customers do the same.

Last night someone broke into her store and stole all the store's cash as well as the money in the donation jar. There was well over $150 in that jar. It may not sound like much but if you've spent time volunteering at an animal shelter you know how much even $50 can help most of them.

The money wasn't being collected randomly. It was to help Ruff Life Rescue fund a spay/neuter day this Saturday. Ruff Life Rescue is an animal rescue that takes animals from other shelters, primarily kill shelters, and rehabilitates and fosters them until they can be rehomed. They get some real tough-luck cases, and they power through. It's a great place and they do a lot of good.

As soon as I heard what happened I drove over to see my friend, then put a $20 bill in the jar. The spay/neuter event is 3 days away. If you can give anything at all it would be greatly appreciated.

Link goes to Ruff Life Rescue's site, or you can go straight to the donation page here.

I wouldn't know. I haven't been spending much time on here lately. I guess it's just the season for people in need.

Stuff like this is exactly what it's for.  It's one thing when a guy I've met personally is having a tough time, but I'm not giving any money to have cat's balls cut off. Pets are a pretty selfish indulgence anyway.

There's no reason you can't do both. It's not like there's a minimum donation or anything.

And like feckingmorons said upthread I also like animals better than most people.
If a million farkers donate $5 to this charity, I bet they will help a lot of animals. Okay, a million is probably too much to expect, but if even 100 farkers donate $5 it will probably help a lot of dogs.

I will donate to any animal charities only if they are in my geographical area. Think globally, act locally. Acting (donating) locally, especially in regard to animal charities, will produce more discernible goodwill and measurable results.

I'm already skeptical about some of these FARK donation request threads. EVERYONE has serious problems at different times, and there are high numbers of good causes and charities in every single Farker's place of residence. I will suggest that anyone thinking of donating to these Fark-generated non-profits and other causes at least think twice before pulling the trigger.

It's fine if you like the person making the donation request, or if you make your own personal judgment call and believe that it's adequately worthwhile for some other reason. Just beware......the con artists certainly are lurking and acting, here and there, on FARK. While certainly NOT the rule, you can bet that there are periodically scams being set up that count on your gullibility.

So, in closing, no, I won't donate to this animal charity request for two reasons. First, it's not in my locale. Second, and really?, Fido's change jar got stolen, so let's ask a nationally prominent website, with its thousands upon thousands of daily viewers, to donate to the Fancy Fido's Flamenco Farm...YA RYLY.!!..

I am skeptical about everything. I didn't give to the Trans-Am thing, but I've got no problem giving to registered charities, or people we know who can use a little help.

Well once the collapse comes and we are all eating these animals instead of each other, we will be thankful we funded places like these that kept them relatively healthy for us.

lantawa: .

Yeah, I understand what you're saying. If it's a choice of donating locally to a charitable organization and donating to someone begging for money on Fark, I would say donate locally.

It's just that this one seems legit to me. I hope I'm not wrong. I've been critical of some threads before. I've even said WTF is this shiat? It belongs on FarkUs instead of the Main page. Did this even make the main page? I'm not sure.....I'm just hanging out in the Commented section these days.

Hey, modmins, if it's not on the main page, it probably at least deserves a link in FarkUs.

I watch a lot of PBS and on one of their sub-channels they often use filler material. One of those is for a charity to help dogs in Thailand. They ask for money and even tell you that they'll ship a dog to anywhere in the world if you want to adopt one. They acknowledge that there may be delays and such due to regulations on the importation of animals.

But after seeing this 2-3 minute promo about 1,000 times my reaction is why should I help a dog in Thailand when there are thousands if not millions of dogs in the US that need a home?

I have nothing against the organization helping dogs out in Thailand. They seem sincere and are actually helping dogs but acting locally is probably what we should be more concerned with.  If you can donate to both, that's great.

I just googled the Thailand dog charity. They actually have a movie I'm watching now. Soi Dog The Movie  (Warning, some scenes may be hard to watch as some of the dogs are in bad shape).

Somethings here don't smell right...

You said you have avoided the FarkUs tab since it was introduced.
You also said you don't spend much time here which would have to mean Fark in general, but you have TotalFark?
Since you admittedly don't spend much time here, why are you playing to the sympathies of a community you participate in minimally?
The previous questions about businesses leaving cash about after closing (and how would they know it was about $150).

Farkers have a strange tendency to try their best to piss eachother off, then turn around and band together when the chips are down.  They are like irish brothers. Quick to tear at eachother's throat, but woe to tha guy that steps between them.  If you are pulling something here, this could get ugly.

Ruff Life has recouped all the money that was stolen. They have even offered to refund our donations if we were giving only for the purpose of helping recover the money that was lost through the theft.

"At Ruff Life Rescue we believe in the transparency of fundraising to our kind sponsors and would never want one to think we were taking advantage of their generosity. I wanted to let you know that we have raised the funds needed for this clinic that had been stolen from us. I can refund your generous donation or I can apply it to next months event, Not-a-Mothers Day Spay Cat Clinic. Please let me know how to process your contribution."

Of course they can keep my contribution.
