(Gawker)   No matter how sexist the gender wars get, you'd think nobody would ever have the audacity to straight-up say that women are just "there to be beautiful objects." But then, maybe you don't read "Esquire"   (gawker.com) divider line 231

I respect someone that has the courage to say what he really thinks.  At least he's being honest and not saying the BS that he thinks people want to hear.

This is basically like if Ann Coulter just came out and explicitly said she hated Mexicans and minorities.  I'd respect her more if she just said that instead of pretending it's about "economic issues" or whatever.

You'd think subby had never read a Fark thread.

It's more along the lines of Playboy stating that there is no point to putting the centerfold's information on the one page. No one cares what her likes/dislikes are. Except Rube Baker, of course.

I'd only respect Ann if she said, "I do it for the same reasons Smokey & The Bandit did it:  'for the money, for the glory, and for the fun... mostly for the money.'"

The Esquire editor must have a huge golden parachute.

In context, what he said really isn't that bad.  Whether it's a beautiful picture of a woman or man or a mountain or a sports car, whatever is in the picture is treated as an object.  When I see a picture of Kate Upton, I don't wonder what her thoughts on sequestration are.  That doesn't mean I don't respect women.  Still, it was a pretty shiatty way to make a stupid point.

While I disagree with the claim, it definitely is the case that some women choose to primarily be regarded as such.

How many "the woman or the car" threads does Fark greenlight? This guy just said it out loud, sometimes men like to look at pretty women and not think any harder than "she's hot." With a picture, this is acceptable, when interacting with a person, this is not.

especially if the picture is of said "non object" bent over on the cover of a men's magazine and inside pushing her tits together making duck lips.

Women are not just there to be beautiful objects.  Sandwiches don't make themselves, homes don't clean themselves and without them and men can't blow themselves.

I suppose someone will eventually try to make the argument that it's comments like this that help contribute to the rape culture of the US.

2013-03-20 09:18:23 PM
If, at some point in your miserable worthless arc of existence, you never have the chance to just be an object of lust or beauty in someone's eyes -- and you understand and they understand that condition of existence --- you have no idea what it's like to be fully alive and you've missed an extraordinary facet of human existence.

I see nothing wrong or incorrect about what he said. I've never once looked at a woman in a magazine and thought "I bet she's smart and genuine." No, I think in terms of how much I would or would not like to hit it. I am quite confident I am not the only male who thinks this way. Generally speaking, though, I would not actually treat a woman that way. They might, but I sure wouldn't.

This doesn't register as much more than a blip on my Feminist Outrage-O-Meter, personally. He's not saying that women are objects, he's saying that most women who show up in  Esquire are decoration, on purpose. A number of female-targeted mags have shallow eye-candy of hot dudes, etc. Not a huge deal.

Was that wrong? Should Esquire not have done that?

2013-03-20 09:25:01 PM
As a woman, I'm not offended by this because it's true.  I'm not dumb enough to have not noticed this by the time I was 15, nor am I dumb enough now to know that Cameron Diaz does not look like that anymore.  It's a story as old as time, and if you look at FARK long enough, you can see that it prevails.

I'm shocked that Esquire of all prestigious magazines has sunken into callow, boorish editorials that would make a neanderthal blush.

Shocked I say.

I just read that headline in my drunk friend's voice. Then I realized that I am drunk too. Now it's like you're speaking to me through my drunk friends brain but it's actually my inner thoughts... I love bourbon. I'm going to go hit on my neighbor's alcoholic mom. Be right back

I agree with you. My only issue is that this attitude often translates to "If I don't want to fark you, you have no worth as a person."

As someone who is not centerfold material (I know, I sound fat and am fat) I think I have intrinsic worth as a person even if you don't find me attractive.

Men can, however, blow each other.

but why take that away from women?  Take away the blow jobs and all they have left is cooking and cleaning.

Then I ogle her tits and ass before walking away...

Respect seems like the wrong word here. It's kind of like saying you respect Hitler because he was honest about how he felt about the Jews. Trying to think of another word that would fit better but one isn't coming to me.

bronyaur1: While I disagree with the claim, it definitely is the case that some women choose to primarily be regarded as such.

The claim was made specifically to the magazine, not to the worlds view, not to his personal POV of women etcetera. It was blatant honesty about their product (magazine). And some women in the daily world do choose to be regarded as such, you're right. Some for the paycheck, some for the cash tips, some for the power it gives them over weak willed men blah blah blah. It does tend to be a used and be used world. Everybody has bills to pay.

Is anyone else out there F5ing constantly to get an update from PrankMonkey? Hope he's alright. Hope even more he returns triumphantly to the thread to share the story. Nothing better than running game when booze has your confidence levels sky high, and a friends alcoholic mom seems like an easy target. Go get 'em, PM.
