Vincent_blackshadow,

After lurking through the threads at Fark for the last 11 years, I've finally registered a screen name. The sole purpose of doing so is to tell you that this will get better. I've been where you are today. In November 2011 I suffered a severe traumatic brain injury. I've often assumed most farkers are brain damaged. You don't need to make that assumption with me; it's true. Maybe that's why I identify with so many of you.

After a long and difficult stay in the ICU, I underwent 10 months of intensive physical, occupational, and speech therapy. I had to relearn how to talk, walk, and use a computer. Learning, up until that point, had been easy for me. That was no longer the case. I had to relearn the process of learning.

Define what motivates you, and work toward that as a singular goal.

I know what it's like to be conscious but intubated and unable to speak.
I know what it's like to have doctors speak to your spouse in hushed tones because they doubt your survival.
I know what it's like to have your own body fail to do what you ask.
I know what it's like to doubt that there will ever be improvement.
I know what it's like to doubt your own survival.

What I need you to hear is this: it will get better. It's going to be a long and difficult process, but you will change for the better.

I'm still here, 16 months on from my injury, back to work, parent to my two kids, and husband to my wife. I got better. You will too.

While I still deal with sequelae from my injury, I don't let it define me. Don't let this define you.

If you're ever in Maine, let me buy you a beer.

I'm sorry I didn't post this sooner; it's that damn 6 hour wait for new accounts.

Had a long talk with Vincent_blackshadow's wife. He's doing better. They were going to take the endotracheal tube (breathing tube) out yesterday but decided to leave it in for a while as a precaution. He is on dialysis three times a week, because the infection went from his lungs to his kidneys, but that may end soon. So, all in all, slow but positive progress.
I had this shiat (MRSA) and it is no joke. At the worst they told my wife to make funeral arrangements. Cancer, heart disease and the like can be prevented and treated but medical science has no clue about this stuff. It comes out of nowhere, hits the perfectly healthy, and a fact that they'd like to keep hidden, kills most victims. Death rate is about 30% during the first 30 days. Bad, bad odds, much worse than most anything else, and I think that the mortality rate is understated I was lucky that I had a world class infectious disease doctor on my case. He calls me his "once in a life time miracle patient". I will need to take oral antibiotics for the rest of my life and get a monthly blood test.

Vincent is one of the lucky ones. His wife is reading these posts to him so post your good wishes and snark here. He's over the hump, but let me tell you, his recovery will be long and hard.

kiwimoogle84: RexTalionis: BTW, has the fundraiser hit the $5000 needed for v_b that isn't covered by insurance?

The five thousand is AFTER his $7500 deductible, which also isn't met. So, no. That's at MINIMUM $12,500 they'll have to pay out of pocket right away. Which was why I was attempting my own fundraiser for him but the Fark mods have a stick up their arses.

IWhy are you dissing on the mods?

A good day today.  He can finally feel the difference in his strength from one day to the next, and the medical staff is making noises like maybe, MAYBE (fingers, toes and eyes crossed) they'll kick him loose next week.  If he keeps pushing himself like he has been, he'll get sprung soon.  That light at the end of the tunnel is finally growing brighter.

The first thing he wants me to do when I get to the hospital each day -- well, maybe not the first thing, usually I -- never mind. That's for another Fark thread.  He really looks forward to reading your messages.  Thanks again, one and all, for your support. It means the world to us.

Dear Vincent_blackshadow:

I'm so glad you're getting better. For all her support during these hard times, you should treat your wife to pedicures every day for the rest of her life....in Aruba.

With much love,
Ras
