Had a long talk with Vincent_blackshadow's wife. He's doing better. They were going to take the endotracheal tube (breathing tube) out yesterday but decided to leave it in for a while as a precaution. He is on dialysis three times a week, because the infection went from his lungs to his kidneys, but that may end soon. So, all in all, slow but positive progress.
I had this shiat (MRSA) and it is no joke. At the worst they told my wife to make funeral arrangements. Cancer, heart disease and the like can be prevented and treated but medical science has no clue about this stuff. It comes out of nowhere, hits the perfectly healthy, and a fact that they'd like to keep hidden, kills most victims. Death rate is about 30% during the first 30 days. Bad, bad odds, much worse than most anything else, and I think that the mortality rate is understated I was lucky that I had a world class infectious disease doctor on my case. He calls me his "once in a life time miracle patient". I will need to take oral antibiotics for the rest of my life and get a monthly blood test.

Vincent is one of the lucky ones. His wife is reading these posts to him so post your good wishes and snark here. He's over the hump, but let me tell you, his recovery will be long and hard.

I'm very happy to hear about positive progress.

She is?

Dear  Vincent_blackshadow,

Your wife is an incredibly attractive woman, you lucky, lucky bastard.

Sincerely,
Men of TFD

P.S. Something, something get well.

Holy crap...this is the first I'm hearing about this.  That's terrifying.  Vincent_blackshadow is a great guy, and I'm glad he's doing better.  I'll keep both him and his wife in my thoughts.

Note to Mizz Blackshadow,

This is quite tame. That's a sign of the great respect that TF holds V_B.

BTW if anyone here asks for naked pictures of yourself, send them a picture of your elbow. They wont know the difference.

Dear Vincent_blackshadow:

I'm so glad you're getting better. For all her support during these hard times, you should treat your wife to pedicures every day for the rest of her life....in Aruba.

With much love,
Ras

glad to hear he's getting better, I read that there are super infections that can't be cured with any antibiotics and well ... it scared the ever lovin shiat out of me. superbugs. yikes.

Anyways, keep us posted as you get better!

/hope there's no perm kidney damage,

They almost took off my foot because of MRSA.

I'm glad he's (somewhat) okay.

Its even scarier when at least two people on TFD have had it. Mortality rate is 30% in the first 30 days. I was on a liter of IV antibiotics a day for 3 months. No prior health issues.

Dear Vincent_blackshadow,

I'm sorry you contracted MRSA.  On the plus side, the antibiotics they've been giving you have almost certainly cleared up that chlamydia by now.  As soon as they pull the catheter, it shouldn't burn anymore when you pee.  So you've got that going for you.  Which is nice.

Cheers,
A guy you've never met.

BTW the antibiotic that I must take everyday's price has gone from $5 a month to $60 overnight, with insurance. Bastards. Better than dieing but I should have taken up meth, the manufacturers are likely more honest.

Hey, smells_like_meat  - thanks for posting this! :)

Quick reminder for everyone who might be interesting in donating towards v_b's hospital bills, and who missed the first thread about this:

we do have a PayPal account set up to receive donations. We've managed to raise enough since Saturday to cover the deductible, but any of you who have experience with illness know that there are a ton of incidental costs which insurance and Disability just won't cover. If you have a few shekels laying around, please consider sending them over to
vblackshadow*fundraiser[nospam-﹫-backwards]liamg*com (please note that you can't copy/paste an email address from Fark, and also please send it as a "gift" or "personal" to minimize the fee PP takes from every transaction.

v_b and fishwife, from a Liter who isn't able to jump into the thread yet, "mr_bunny wishes you all the best in a fast recovery. I really do love you, man"

I took so many antibiotics, I didn't see a zit for two years and that was fine w/ me since I got the infection from a zit! FishWife-- Awesome user name! Tell Mr. B that I am using my naughty bunny mug daily in tribute. I, too, have two grown sons who turned out well in spite of me.

The Husband had MRSA in his NOSE two years ago. We caught it quickly..but he was pretty miserable for awhile. And I never want to pack a nose-wound again.  bleargh. That right there, is a testament to how much I love the man. In other words...message me if you need someone to talk to!

V_B,hang in there. I'm generally a liter and a lurker and I have yet to attend a Fark Party, but I pay attention. You're one of the good 'uns.

I'm sorry to hear about your illness and glad to hear things are on the mend.

/Wish I had some snark to share, but I'm tapped out thanks to a 24-hour GI bug I picked up. So as miserable as I've been, I feel about 1/10,000th of your pain.

I've been keeping tabs since day one. Fish Wife and I are going to be going over his insurance coverage and claims as soon as she has a minute to breathe. I'm sure he could still use donations if there's any money to be squeezed from Farkers further, but it sounds like for the most part we're just worried about the $7500 deductible. I'll have to look at the actual insurance verification to see what the patient responsibility is after that, but it shouldn't be too scary.

That being said, V_B and Fish_Wife, I hope the opportunity arises for me to meet you two in person. I'll buy a couple of beers for each of ya.

Hang in there, V_B!

Dear Vincent_Blackshadow,

I don't know you, you don't know me. But I could immediately tell the fark community loves you, and I was touched by the plea for help. You have an amazing community that cares for you, and it makes me proud to be part of that group. I'll save the teary-eyed stuff for later, but I want to tell you that when life gets you down, it's like a clam dig. You have to get down and dirty, right there in the cold, wet sand, and dig furiously with your hands for that clam. Sometimes you get the clam, pull it out of the ground and hold it above your head triumphantly, shirt wet and caked with sand and exclaim "look at that clam! We're eating well tonight!"

But sometimes you don't get the clam, you rise up, cold, wet, and smelling of defeat. You trudge home with an empty pail, having to tell your kids why they don't get to eat at home tonight, and instead have to suffer through the torture of rooting through your wallet to scrounge up what bills you have to go to an expensive four star restaurant. They will be disappointed, but hopeful that they can get at least a grilled cheese.

Perhaps I got a little off-track there, but what I mean to say is this, don't let anything knock you down for long. If something knocks you down, you get back up. You take your punches, sometimes you fall, sometimes you bleed, but you spit that blood out, you get back up no matter how punch-drunk you are, you get back up, look what knocked you down in the eye and say "I'm not afraid of you."

Be strong, Vincent-Blackshadow.

It's been brought to my attention that I had been implying that they shouldn't need funds beyond the deductible for their insurance coverage. My wording came out completely different than I had it in my brain, and that is 1000% my fault.

FishWife and I haven't had a chance to really sit down and look through it all yet, and my brain shorted out. That's on me, and I'll be squeezing out a few bucks when I get home.

Anybody getting paid on Friday? They can still use any help available from whomever can spare it, and I'll be careful not to overstep my boundaries/knowledge from here on out.

Peace!

And I would just like to say that even though I don't know you, life is like playing an according behind the Olive Garden at 4:00 in the morning.  Sometimes the cops come, sometimes the bums pop out of the dumpsters and dance, sometimes the waiter comes out to tell you to stuff that infernal squeeze box up your butt and pull it out your ears.  The point is, you just have to keep playing.

And drinking orange juice.  Orange juice was invented in the 14th century when two field workers were frying their shoe leather and dropped their oranges onto a rock.  That rock fell, dumped the orange and the guys stepped on the oranges in the shoeless feet.  Juice was spilled and they drank it.  They drank it and they liked it.  Not us much as grilled cheese but that wasn't to be invented until 147 years later a three armed boy with a lisp barfed on a cat but that's another story.

I may have gotten a little bit off track here but what I am trying to say is that horses and shrimp do not live in the same neighborhoods.  Neigh, get it?  Shrimp hoods?  Get it?  Anyway, if you find yourself looking for a place to house your prawns and ponies, don't give up.  You may get a lot of doors slammed in your face but then next one that opens, you look that fool in the eye and say, "I have a hole in my pocket and a bionic fist."

God speed Vincent-Blackshadow.

Dear Vincent_Blackshadow:
I heard about a study (not sponsored by anyone who will gain from it monetarily) that showed that Manuka Honey is quite effective at battling antibiotic-resistant infections, so I would recommend having a tablespoon of it each day. It's got lots of benefits, including not killing off your helpful stomach flora, and it has no drawbacks. Even if it were completely ineffective at helping kill the MRSA, it's very pleasant-tasting and relatively low-cost. :-) Hope that helps!

We, as a society, can thank ourselves for MRSA.

The R stands for resistant.

Sure, in 10,000 years the staph aureus might have developed it's own resistance, but this one is all on us.

How to help:

Are you healthy?
Answer "yes" and an antibiotic for a "cold" or "URTI" is not going to help.  Man up and it will be gone in 7-10 days with or without an antibiotic.

Does your kid have a cold?
Answer "yes" with a fever under 101?  She/he will be fine in 7-10 days with or without an antibiotic.  Do not give Motrin or Tylenol for the fever unless the kid is complaining.  That extra 2 degrees will help fight the infection.

BTW:  If you are healthy, using Tamiflu when you have influenza is usually a waste of money.  All it will do is add to your agony of being sick with nausea and vomiting. Suck it up.

"If you rode the Black Shadow at top speed for any length of time, you would almost certainly die." In this line he was comparing the "straight line" VBS to more maneuverable and modern cafe racers. You would put down the Black Shadow if you tried to reach speed on anything but a runway.

I don't hang out here much, and can't even remember if I've ever "crossed paths" with vincent before. Vincent_blackshadow,

After lurking through the threads at Fark for the last 11 years, I've finally registered a screen name. The sole purpose of doing so is to tell you that this will get better. I've been where you are today. In November 2011 I suffered a severe traumatic brain injury. I've often assumed most farkers are brain damaged. You don't need to make that assumption with me; it's true. Maybe that's why I identify with so many of you.

After a long and difficult stay in the ICU, I underwent 10 months of intensive physical, occupational, and speech therapy. I had to relearn how to talk, walk, and use a computer. Learning, up until that point, had been easy for me. That was no longer the case. I had to relearn the process of learning.

Define what motivates you, and work toward that as a singular goal.

I know what it's like to be conscious but intubated and unable to speak.
I know what it's like to have doctors speak to your spouse in hushed tones because they doubt your survival.
I know what it's like to have your own body fail to do what you ask.
I know what it's like to doubt that there will ever be improvement.
I know what it's like to doubt your own survival.

What I need you to hear is this: it will get better. It's going to be a long and difficult process, but you will change for the better.

I'm still here, 16 months on from my injury, back to work, parent to my two kids, and husband to my wife. I got better. You will too.

While I still deal with sequelae from my injury, I don't let it define me. Don't let this define you.

If you're ever in Maine, let me buy you a beer.

I'm sorry I didn't post this sooner; it's that damn 6 hour wait for new accounts.

-Baldrick

One of the best pieces of advice I ever received in the business world was to keep my head down and my mouth shut until I figured out what the hell was going on.

It only took 11 years of lurking and a head injury to figure it out. This should be fun.

Seconded. It is a profoundly life-altering experience. It changed my base outlook on life: goals, expectations, stressors, and baselines of happiness and sadness.

It is not a good time.

Straight from Readers Digest:

Hospital regulations require a wheelchair for patients being discharged. However, while working as a student nurse, I found one elderly gentleman already dressed and sitting on the bed with a suitcase at his feet, who insisted he didn't need my help to leave the hospital.

After a chat about rules being rules, he reluctantly let me wheel him to the elevator. On the way down, I asked him if his wife was meeting him.

"I don't know," he said. "She's still upstairs in the bathroom changing out of her hospital gown."

A good day today.  He can finally feel the difference in his strength from one day to the next, and the medical staff is making noises like maybe, MAYBE (fingers, toes and eyes crossed) they'll kick him loose next week.  If he keeps pushing himself like he has been, he'll get sprung soon.  That light at the end of the tunnel is finally growing brighter.

The first thing he wants me to do when I get to the hospital each day -- well, maybe not the first thing, usually I -- never mind. That's for another Fark thread.  He really looks forward to reading your messages.  Thanks again, one and all, for your support. It means the world to us.

Yes, I, too, as a stranger, would like to say that "You'll be just fine.", even though I have no real way of knowing that. You'll be just fine.

Hey v_b, I don't think we've ever talked here on fark. but you seem to have a way of bringing out the best in people, so I just wanted to send you best wishes for a full and speedy recovery. I I lost a dear friend to MRSA a few years ago, and I sent what I could at the moment.

I've heard so many amazing stories over the year from Farkers who have been to hell and back. I believe you could hardly find a more supportive community than the one here. Keep your spirits up, and kick this thing's ass!

The five thousand is AFTER his $7500 deductible, which also isn't met. So, no. That's at MINIMUM $12,500 they'll have to pay out of pocket right away. Which was why I was attempting my own fundraiser for him but the Fark mods have a stick up their arses.

I actually was corrected on that a few minutes ago- sorry for that. I thought the mods, not ADMINS, decided which threads greenlight. I don't submit a ton of links so I didn't know the difference. But it may get greenlit tomorrow, and I'm stoked about that, and so is Fish_Wife.

Cool!

And FYI-If you click on our profiles (admin or mod), there's a link that tells you the difference between admins & mods. A lot of people aren't aware of the link's existence. It's also in the FArQ.

I hope that you're recovery continues unabated, and that it does so on a Richter-like scale.

I'll be in LA for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremony in April.  Maybe if there is smoke rising from your chimney, I can catch a wave from within the assembled crowd below your apartment window.

Get well, get strong, get thirsty!

Baldrick's Cunning Plan: Vincent_blackshadow,

-Baldrick

Baldrick, that was very touching and equally true.  I won't pretend to know what you've been through, but I've been through the death of a very young Daughter to Leukemia, and your words brought tears to my eyes.  After 2 years of being alive for no other reason than I woke up that morning, I pressed on.

After 12 years I've come to realize the age old adage of "That which does not kill me makes me stronger" are words to live by.  I'm glad to hear you're doing better and I also wish the best of recoveries to Vincent_Blackshadow.

Don't let life get you down, it does get better!

Yes, yes a thousand times yes. My brain infection was exactly the same. You doubt your sanity, you doubt your ability to get well. will this ever end???? A good woman got me through to the other side where I firmly now reside. Now, anything that I experience or do, for better or worse, is an extra a bonus. I'm not religious at all, but I lived instead of died for a reason. It may be as simple as giving a child a hug or it may be something great. Don't know, doesn't matter.

Glad to hear the numerous updates in this thread! V_B, you damn well better get better soon! I always enjoy your posts of international news on FB and other totally random stuff. And yet somehow after all these years, I had no idea your wife was on here. Thanks for the updates on him FishWife. I hope the recovery is speedy and full, and you can get back on the tubes (THE GOOD INFORMATIONAL TOOBS!!!) soon.

Another good day today. V_B's voice is stronger still, and he's really giving the nurses the business. I've been sneaking decidedly unhealthy but tasty food in for him (no beer, though; that's going to have to wait until he gets home, tempting though it is to bring him one. Or two. Or six.).  He's impressing the hell outta the doctors with how much progress he's made just in the last few days. He's on a roll now! Thanks again, everyone, for your posts in this thread; we're both enjoying them.

Lorelle, the very first thing he wants to eat when he busts outta this joint is an In n' Out Double-Double Animal Style, with Animal Style frys and a vanilla shake. I've been bringing him beef burritos and sweet potato fries; the nurses have told him that it's OK now for me to bring any outside food that he wants.  It's been an interesting mix of items, to say the least.  But at this point, I am more than happy to bring him whatever his little heart desires.

Ah, a man after my own heart. And stomach. I'm glad he's hungry. It took 4 months until I could eat.

DAMMITSOMUCH.  I really thought v_b was going to be getting out of the hospital in a week or so, and now the doctor's talking another MONTH of rehab.  SHIAT.  Something tells me that v_b will get his hiney outta there sooner, but that was a slap I wasn't expecting.  I know, I truly do know how fortunate we are that he's doing as well as he is, but I want him home already!

Thank you again, one and all, for your messages.  He loves to read them.
