Vinnie honey baby sweetheart, if I can call you that, have your people call my people, we can knock out a deal on the screenplay this week, maybe talk merchandising percentages after a few focus groups, but this is gonna be a monster, through the roof, I mean, THROUGH THE ROOF, lambkins, if I can call you that.

Is there like a Fark Immortals badge for people who've met a serious illness, grabbed it by its throat, kicked it in the balls and spit in its eye before snapping its neck?  Because if there is, I think v_b (and smells_like_meat and probably some others) earned it.

Seconded. It is a profoundly life-altering experience. It changed my base outlook on life: goals, expectations, stressors, and baselines of happiness and sadness.

It is not a good time.

Straight from Readers Digest:

Hospital regulations require a wheelchair for patients being discharged. However, while working as a student nurse, I found one elderly gentleman already dressed and sitting on the bed with a suitcase at his feet, who insisted he didn't need my help to leave the hospital.

After a chat about rules being rules, he reluctantly let me wheel him to the elevator. On the way down, I asked him if his wife was meeting him.

"I don't know," he said. "She's still upstairs in the bathroom changing out of her hospital gown."

A good day today.  He can finally feel the difference in his strength from one day to the next, and the medical staff is making noises like maybe, MAYBE (fingers, toes and eyes crossed) they'll kick him loose next week.  If he keeps pushing himself like he has been, he'll get sprung soon.  That light at the end of the tunnel is finally growing brighter.

The first thing he wants me to do when I get to the hospital each day -- well, maybe not the first thing, usually I -- never mind. That's for another Fark thread.  He really looks forward to reading your messages.  Thanks again, one and all, for your support. It means the world to us.

Hey v_b, I don't think we've ever talked here on fark. but you seem to have a way of bringing out the best in people, so I just wanted to send you best wishes for a full and speedy recovery. I I lost a dear friend to MRSA a few years ago, and I sent what I could at the moment.

I've heard so many amazing stories over the year from Farkers who have been to hell and back. I believe you could hardly find a more supportive community than the one here. Keep your spirits up, and kick this thing's ass!

The five thousand is AFTER his $7500 deductible, which also isn't met. So, no. That's at MINIMUM $12,500 they'll have to pay out of pocket right away. Which was why I was attempting my own fundraiser for him but the Fark mods have a stick up their arses.

I actually was corrected on that a few minutes ago- sorry for that. I thought the mods, not ADMINS, decided which threads greenlight. I don't submit a ton of links so I didn't know the difference. But it may get greenlit tomorrow, and I'm stoked about that, and so is Fish_Wife.

Cool!

And FYI-If you click on our profiles (admin or mod), there's a link that tells you the difference between admins & mods. A lot of people aren't aware of the link's existence. It's also in the FArQ.

I hope that you're recovery continues unabated, and that it does so on a Richter-like scale.

I'll be in LA for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremony in April.  Maybe if there is smoke rising from your chimney, I can catch a wave from within the assembled crowd below your apartment window.

Get well, get strong, get thirsty!

Baldrick's Cunning Plan: Vincent_blackshadow,

After lurking through the threads at Fark for the last 11 years, I've finally registered a screen name. The sole purpose of doing so is to tell you that this will get better. I've been where you are today. In November 2011 I suffered a severe traumatic brain injury. I've often assumed most farkers are brain damaged. You don't need to make that assumption with me; it's true. Maybe that's why I identify with so many of you.

After a long and difficult stay in the ICU, I underwent 10 months of intensive physical, occupational, and speech therapy. I had to relearn how to talk, walk, and use a computer. Learning, up until that point, had been easy for me. That was no longer the case. I had to relearn the process of learning.

Define what motivates you, and work toward that as a singular goal.

I know what it's like to be conscious but intubated and unable to speak.
I know what it's like to have doctors speak to your spouse in hushed tones because they doubt your survival.
I know what it's like to have your own body fail to do what you ask.
I know what it's like to doubt that there will ever be improvement.
I know what it's like to doubt your own survival.

What I need you to hear is this: it will get better. It's going to be a long and difficult process, but you will change for the better.

I'm still here, 16 months on from my injury, back to work, parent to my two kids, and husband to my wife. I got better. You will too.

While I still deal with sequelae from my injury, I don't let it define me. Don't let this define you.

If you're ever in Maine, let me buy you a beer.

I'm sorry I didn't post this sooner; it's that damn 6 hour wait for new accounts.

-Baldrick

Baldrick, that was very touching and equally true.  I won't pretend to know what you've been through, but I've been through the death of a very young Daughter to Leukemia, and your words brought tears to my eyes.  After 2 years of being alive for no other reason than I woke up that morning, I pressed on.

After 12 years I've come to realize the age old adage of "That which does not kill me makes me stronger" are words to live by.  I'm glad to hear you're doing better and I also wish the best of recoveries to Vincent_Blackshadow.

Don't let life get you down, it does get better!

Yes, yes a thousand times yes. My brain infection was exactly the same. You doubt your sanity, you doubt your ability to get well. will this ever end???? A good woman got me through to the other side where I firmly now reside. Now, anything that I experience or do, for better or worse, is an extra a bonus. I'm not religious at all, but I lived instead of died for a reason. It may be as simple as giving a child a hug or it may be something great. Don't know, doesn't matter.

Glad to hear the numerous updates in this thread! V_B, you damn well better get better soon! I always enjoy your posts of international news on FB and other totally random stuff. And yet somehow after all these years, I had no idea your wife was on here. Thanks for the updates on him FishWife. I hope the recovery is speedy and full, and you can get back on the tubes (THE GOOD INFORMATIONAL TOOBS!!!) soon.

Another good day today. V_B's voice is stronger still, and he's really giving the nurses the business. I've been sneaking decidedly unhealthy but tasty food in for him (no beer, though; that's going to have to wait until he gets home, tempting though it is to bring him one. Or two. Or six.).  He's impressing the hell outta the doctors with how much progress he's made just in the last few days. He's on a roll now! Thanks again, everyone, for your posts in this thread; we're both enjoying them.

Lorelle, the very first thing he wants to eat when he busts outta this joint is an In n' Out Double-Double Animal Style, with Animal Style frys and a vanilla shake. I've been bringing him beef burritos and sweet potato fries; the nurses have told him that it's OK now for me to bring any outside food that he wants.  It's been an interesting mix of items, to say the least.  But at this point, I am more than happy to bring him whatever his little heart desires.

Ah, a man after my own heart. And stomach. I'm glad he's hungry. It took 4 months until I could eat.

DAMMITSOMUCH.  I really thought v_b was going to be getting out of the hospital in a week or so, and now the doctor's talking another MONTH of rehab.  SHIAT.  Something tells me that v_b will get his hiney outta there sooner, but that was a slap I wasn't expecting.  I know, I truly do know how fortunate we are that he's doing as well as he is, but I want him home already!

Thank you again, one and all, for your messages.  He loves to read them.
