Holy crap. Those things are gorgeous. I can't even imagine how time-consuming this must be, or how much of a heartbreaker it must be when one of 'em breaks.

As someone who collects eggs, this thread is relevant to my interests.

Seriously. I must have 30 or 40 of the little suckers. Mostly polished stone and
semi-precious  (e.g. jade, quarts, lapis, etc...) and a few Faberge-types.

Don't know why, but it's been a thing with me for going on 20 years.

There has been too much violence. Too much pain. But I have an honorable compromise. Just walk away. Give me your painted eggs, and I'll spare your lives. Just walk away and we'll give you a safe passageway in the wastelands. Just walk away and there will be an end to the horror.

A hungarian book I read as a kid also featured this type of egg decorating. It was very elaborate and done with bees wax, where you'd dye and then scrape off the wax and make complex patterns.

I found the book again a few years back via the wonders of the internet, was by this author:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kate_Seredy  Makes me wonder if they have a similar basis (eggs in Ukraine and Hungary) especially since there was a mongol connection there too (though IIRC the Magyar think they're decendants of the Huns)

I've done this in the past. The eggs can be gorgeous, but I never could get my wax applied meticulously enough that my eggs looked as beautiful.

I used to know some old Polish ladies that did the wax on egg thing. They used pin heads to spread the wax. Kinda neat as a geeky kid.

It's not "the Ukraine," it's just Ukraine.     Just as it's not 'The England, The France, The Germany, and The Brazil'

We made a brazillion of these things in church when I was a kid.  Some of those little old slovak ladies made some really beautiful ones.  I have the artistic talent of an epileptic ferret though so my job was mostly to get the inside parts of the eggs out without breaking the shell.
