I thought all you had to do was reset the power to the complex, which would reset the computer!

Also, it helps if you know Unix...

There were also reports of skulls popping up on some computer screens, which could indicate that hackers had installed malicious code in the networks, the Korean Internet Security Agency said.

seriously though, is there any relevant distinction between "cyber attack" and "just a virus"?  Especially if it's a virus that plants skulls on people's recently bricked machines instead of trying to extort money or DDoS some website.... either they haven't upgraded their antivirus or patched Windows since 1996, or this was targeted.  Hackers aren't in the business of putting skulls on screens for lulz anymore, are they?

I'm continuously amazed that people can't tell the difference between the warmongers being alarmist about Iran (Fox News, basically) and the administration. Nobody in the executive branch is making ANY noise about the joys of preemptive war, quite the opposite, yet the paranoid conspiracist yawping is louder than it was in 2002, when the Bushies were Very Clearly Signaling that they were going to invade Iraq as soon as they got the stuff into position.

And absolutely no one, not even the neocons, is proposing war with North Korea as a solution to anything. The only people talking about that are the North Koreans, and they're obviously no more serious about it than they've ever been. North Korea has nothing that anyone wants, other than a nuclear program we'd like them to stop, and lacks the resources militarily to do more than demonstrate. Just because they nominally have a huge army doesn't mean they actually have working ammo and food enough to put them in the field.

I'm betting it wasn't a virus.  Some IT guy probably set the screensaver to "3-D Text", set the screensaver font to Wingdings, typed a capital N as the text, and unplugged the keyboards and mice.

I have a couple of old mid 90's SGI systems here. That File System Navigator is included with the IRIX 6.5.6 that came with them and is sorta interesting. It's a serious resource hog and requires almost as much processing time as the files and programs themselves. I played with it some, but what it requires in terms of RAM to use is ridiculous. I could see it being used for a supercomputer system but not for a 180 and 200 Mgz processor with 96 mg of RAM.

I found a picture of the entire Best Korea cyber-warfare division. He might only be able to work 3 hours each day due to power outages, but as soon as they can find a computer in SK with a 5 1/4" floppy to upload their virus to, the shiat is really going to hit the fan.

Whoa whoa whoa.  Let's not rush hastily into a bad decision.  "Tom" is a valued employee and lost access to German transexual midget schizer-porn might be worse than a little international incident here and there.

High on Jurassic Park one-liners, I downloaded the last [semi-]released version from SGI (go go anonymous ftp) and compiled that on one of the department's IRIX workstations.

Sleek as a shark, polished as a Lamborghini, responsive as a pregnant drunk Jersey cow.  On a multi-processor system.  It let me fly around over my "saved Usenet posts" subdir though, so that was cool.

I was watching Star Trek Voyager last night.  The one where they create an assistant for The Doctor, based on some Cardassian war criminal (well, at least what the Starfleet Database says about him, which doesn't include anything about him being a war criminal, so really the guy the computer created wasn't actually a war criminal, so I didn't get what the big deal is, but I digress...)

Anyhow, when they were setting up the program and they were having some troubles getting it working properly, so Harry Kim confidently announces "Computer: Install a recursive algorithm".  I about fell out of my seat laughing.

Any old recursive algorithm will do?  They should have had the hologram go from flickering/distorted speech to just reciting the Fibonacci sequence very slowly.
