GungFu: Sid_6.7: GungFu: Did he have a heavy instrument?
Yes.

Did he use it on the Nazi?
No.

FTFA:

Ken Casey noticed this and ran right over to the guy, smashed him in the face, took off his bass and hit him with that and then jumped on him and all out chaos ensued.

You got a negative score on the verbal portion of the SAT's, didn't you?

I watched the video instead, sorry. No, I didn't see him hit anything with his axe. Didn't even see the 'all out chaos' that supposedly ensued.
Silly me for watching video of the event rather than reading about it!

Where inthe video was the fight?

He's a founding member, NEVER have Nazis been welcomed at their shows. Good for him. Even though they completely tried to alienate their skin fans after The Departed came out...........COUGH COUGH

2013-03-20 07:51:39 AM

scottydoesntknow: You'd figure he would've started doing that during 'Skinhead on the MBTA' (I know the song isn't about Nazi skinheads, but it makes more sense than T.N.T.)

What is the jist of that song?  I have heard some Dropkick Murphys, but not that one.

2013-03-20 07:52:25 AM
Awesome. I like these guys more all the time. When I worked at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center a few years ago, they did a surprise in-room show for one of their big fans who was very sick and unlikely to leave the hospital again. Stand up bunch of guys.

Back in the 70's someone suggested charging people a nickel to get off of the trains in Boston. A guy wrote a song pointing out how dumb that was and it was about a guy who couldn't afford to get off the train so he was stuck on there forever, Charlie on the MBTA. Sooooo Dropkick wrote a cover called Skinhead on the MBTA where you just replace Charlie with a skinhead.

What I don't understand is why didn't that b*tch just had him a nickel instead of a damn sandwich??

The world should treat religious zealots the same way.
Especially those with guns.

Yes, but Skinhead on the MBTA, the song they were playing in the seconds before, is a song about a Nazi.

No, it's not.

Although this was in NYC, racist kids and wannabe Nazis are pretty much banned by threat of a beatdown from going to punk and hardcore shows in Boston.

Fun fact: The original title to "Whole Lotta Rosie" was "Whole Lotta Rosenbergs In Our Camps" but it didn't have the same ring.

And in most other cities. I've seen the Murphys a few times in MPLS and I would say there are always a few wannabe skin heads trying to be cool in the pit. I have not witnessed any Nazi skins and presume they would get their ass kicked. These days I go to DKM shows to see the opening acts, as the DKM fan base has become all too similar to a Creed like crowd.

Ken doing this I can understand. He and McColgan hated the fact that their first five years playing the scene was infested with skinheads like a junkie's dog has fleas. That's one of the reasons he quit the band, the scene wasn't improving any and FSU was starting to make some serious racial tension issues with Black Boston, all while using DKM as an unofficial mascot.

McColgan leaving was a deliberate big fark you to the white supremacist scene in Boston and it largely worked, FSU is gone, skinheads are underground and race issues are on the mend.

Al Barr, OTOH, doing something like this would be God-level irony. fark that tiny racist Rhode Island punk biatch in the ear.

Meanwhile all of the non-nazi skinheads were busy looking to jump in on any tussle that started so they can start kicking people.  skinheads are childish violent idiots, seen that proven time and time again

Yeah, I'm familiar with it.

Sooooo Dropkick wrote a cover called Skinhead on the MBTA where you just replace Charlie with a skinhead.

That's it?  Does he do or say anything white supremacy-ish?

What I don't understand is why didn't that b*tch just had him a nickel instead of a damn sandwich??

Well, one take on that is that it is useful to her to have her husband "neutralized", but she is either unwilling to divorce him or has some vested interest in not doing so.

Skinheads are not Nazis by default. Boneheads, Nazis and such are that.

No. Skinhead and Nazi are not synonyms. The Dropkick Murphys embraced skinhead culture, especially in the early days. Honestly, if you didn't know that, I'm not reading the rest of your post.

Had the pleasure of meeting Ken after a show in Columbus OH at the newport, it was the first show for the Meanest of Times album.  He took the time to stop and talk to a couple of us, and was gonna call my buddies wife and say hi, but my friends phone died when he tried to dial.  As a consolation, he grabbed a couple of the other guys and they all signed the CD my friend bought.  Bunch of stand up dudes for sure.

As I typically hear the term "skinhead" used, it refers not just to the practice of shaving one's head (which can be a sort of edgy alternative to the combover for a balding man) but to white supremacist ideology as well.  While not all white supremacists are neo-Nazis, the distinction makes very little difference if you are among the groups of people they hate.  What are you saying makes a skinhead a skinhead, then?

The skinhead culture noted in the Dropkick song is neither Neo-Nazi or White Supremacist. As has been explained above.

Actually Wikipedia has a very fair and informative article on their entire culture. They do a good job explaining the beginning of the culture to the "attempted hijack" by the hate groups to the subgroups.

It's actually a good read.

Basically you think that because you hear people say "skinhead Nazi", which is incorrect. They are just Nazis.

I was at the Oi Fest a few years back and like 50 of them showed up, the riot police had to come to escort them out because they got the sh*t kicked out of them.

1 part working class pride, 1 part self respect, healthy dash of drinking, and a sprinkling of knuckling up.

One of the symbols of the skinheads is the crucified skinhead...it used to represent the plight of the working class and how they were looked down upon, in modern times it has also been used to define the skinhead movement in general and how traditional skins get lumped in with the nazi skins.

There have been groups of black skinheads and even groups of gay skinheads.

Anyone catch Old Man Markley?  The openers on the current tour.  Fun stuff.  Caught DKM with Old Man Markley at the House of Blues in Orlando.  Great band.  Won't ever sell a million records, but a ton of fun to listen to

SockMonkeyHolocaust: I have to admit that after a Flogging Molly show where skinheads ruled the pit and the men's room (for some strange reason), I had kind of written off Irish punk/hardcore's fan base as largely hyper aggressive white males shouting about "working class pride" as a code word for "white pride". It's actually really nice to see that at least one band is going to stand up against that stereotype.

If you don't know them, you might try playing their song "Wicked Sensitive Crew" on youtube sometime.  They like to poke fun at a lot of those stereotypes.

OMM are a great fun live band. They opened for Me First and the Gimmes gimmes last fall in SF (shocking, since theyre on Fat Wreck Chords and all). Saved the show, honestly, as the opening opening band was god-farking awful.
