HotWingConspiracy: ng2810: They're called New Yorkers, subby.

/Aren't they?

No, Jerseyfolk. No right on red there.

You can turn right on red in NJ. Its in NYC where it is a general ban.

pacified: airline food.

Why don't they just make the whole plane out of the airplane food?

I asked a cop once if it was ok to left on red from one one-way street to another and his head kind of exploded.  He eventually muttered 'no' and walked away.

It is allowed here (BC, Canada).

I always figured if you were turning into traffic moving the same direction without crossing opposing traffic lanes, you're good to go.

Ahh, science threads with a snarky headline. Where even the biggest scientific achievement will almost without exception be vastly overshadowed by a deep, pedantic discussion about the snark in the headline.

Know how I know you're not from California. It's real simple, No one from California has ever used the word "Cali" and those who do are mouth breathing low-lifes..

That's what we need the telescopes for, stupid.  Because of expansion, the green lights actually look red.  When they're red, they look like they burned out.

They are people who should be pushed out into the intersection by the guy waiting behind them who would just like to make a right turn on red in 10 seconds instead of waiting 5 minutes.

Darth_Lukecash: In some states and cities, right on red is illegal.

Down from my house, there is a red light camera intersection. I have gotten a ticket for turning right onto it as though i ran the light from 90 degrees away. Now i wait until it's green for me.

wildcardjack: Plenty of reasons not to turn right on red. Can't see, traffic, conserving gas by not having to floor it, needing a moment to check facebook, deciding at last moment to make the right.

It's that farker who just sits there on a green that I shouldn't have had to brake for that get the horns!

The people i see fishing through their console, talking on the phone, what have you, screw them. When you are first at the light, you have a responsibility to everyone behind you.

Turning right on red is optional, not required.  If I'm waiting to turn right at a red light (for traffic, pedestrians, whatever) and you honk at me?  Guess what, we're both waiting for the green light, my schedule isn't so tight I can't wait another 20 seconds.

JayCab: Fubini: Darth_Lukecash: In some states and cities, right on red is illegal.

The best places are those that normally allow right on red, but every other intersection is marked with NO right on red. Then some jackass lays on his horn because he can't read.

This might be a downtown San Francisco speciality, but  what's even worse is when you're in right turn lane waiting for a pedestrian to cross in front of you, and that jackass lays on his horn, like he's expecting me to run the ped over or something.

Huh, I don't remember any no-right-on-red intersections here in S.F., though I've lived and/or worked here for 20 years ... I'm looking at downtown out my window right now (I work in Soma). But that says more about my refusal to drive in downtown S.F. than the actual signage...

All that said I'm glad this isn't Montreal or Boston or N.Y.C. Drivers there are nuts. I even drove to work today (rare, happens once a month or so) over the Bay Bridge at rush hour ... it was busy but everyone was calm and quiet and it was a super relaxing commute. I love California drivers, they're awesome.

... I'm sure my car has been stolen in the meantime but that's another issue ...

Big_Fat_Liar: LiberalWeenie: I end up waiting for the green frequently because some jackoff's SUV has pulled way ahead and to the left of my little hybrid, and I can't see what's coming. Honk all you want, but it shouldn't be directed at me.

It doesn't have to be an SUV.  I drive a small pickmeup truck and it happens to me all the time.  Even little cars do it - though they are easier to see around/over/through.  Not sure what makes someone in a left-on-green-only lane want to pull up past the white line - not like they can go when traffic clears or something.  But i understand your special sort of rage.  My brother became a road rager when he bought his hybrid.  Somehow I think it is easier for "you people" to get enraged.  Here you are not polluting much and all these other polluting arses keep pissing you off....

You're probably a really nice guy who in no way deserves this, but....FARK YOU BUDDY, IT'S A GOD DAMN PICKUP TRUCK. Not pickmeup, not pickemup, pickup. Pick. Up. As in you pick some god damn shiat up in it and drive somewhere with it in the back.

This and cuppa. You drink your cup of coffee in your pickup truck. If you drink a cuppa in a pickmeup truck I hope you die horribly. I don't know why but both those words inspire a sort of homicidal rage in me, for no good reason, and because there's laws and shiat I can't ever act on it so I just go around silently hating on people that use these phrases. I'm sorry. Have a nice day!

BTW, it's usually legal from a two-way as well. There's just a few states in the US that prohibit left on red onto a one-way street.

I like taking advantage of it because it always confuses the driver behind and often my passenger.

Well, ok, should have looked it up further. Wikipedia says only Alaska, Idaho, Michigan, Oregon and Washington allow the turn from a two-way street.
