(Discover)   Powerful new radio telescope begins making observations. First observation: what is the deal with people who sit in the right lane a red light, then turn right when the light turns green? Who are these people?   (blogs.discovermagazine.com) divider line 72

Some intersections here have 2 right turn lanes. You can turn right on red in the far right lane, but not the inside right turn lane.

We've got an intersection here that has a "NO RIGHT ON RED on weekdays 6:00-9:00AM and 3:00-6:00PM, and sundays 7:00AM-noon " so I get a kick out of laying my horn on people outside those windows and being given the finger

there's a metered on ramp near me.  I CANNOT farkING STAND using the ramp on like, a saturday or sunday, and then seeing two lanes of traffic, 20 cars deep.....and then of course when you get to the sign that says RAMP METERED WHEN FLASHING.

There's one of those at a busy intersection near my house and it has a red-light camera. When the stoplight goes red, the place suddenly looks like the red carpet on Oscar night with all the flashing as people turn right. The killer is that for most of the cycle, the left-to-right traffic is also blocked, so there's no reason not to have a right turn green.

Must be about safety or something...

when arizona used speed cameras, there was a stretch of I-10 where -- this was brilliantly unfair and daibolically genius -- in about a 5 mile stretch of I-10, you had speed cameras placed every 12 farking feet, but no speed limit sign.  i remember leaving a football game one night and with about 4-5 lanes of traffic, everyone holding pace at probably 75MPH, it was POP POP POP POP POP! POP!  POP POP! POP POP POP!  and i guess we were all like, "hope it aint me!"

i hated that stretch.  tell me the limit, farkstains.

On my way to work (and half my errands) there's one of those combined lanes that people use if they're either going straight or making a right turn, with signal and a right-turn arrow.

So far so good, except that the New York DOT in their infinite wisdom didn't plan for what to do when the right-turn arrow turned green but the first person in line was planning to go straight. The dozen drivers waiting to make a right turn behind the one guy going straight still have to farking sit there until they get a regular green.

For this sort of engineering wisdom I pay upwards of 50 cents a gallon in various gas taxes.

When I am emperor of New York, the engineers who allowed this idiocy will be first against the wall.

Dunno why you would build a telescope to look at radios. Its not like they are usually far away or hard to just buy.

Plus I thought they were more for listening to than looking at.

While it can be controlled at individual intersections, turning right on red is legal in all 50 states, DC, Guam, and Puerto Rico, and has been for over thirty years.  NYC is the only city in the US that disallows it unless instructed otherwise.

It doesn't have to be an SUV.  I drive a small pickmeup truck and it happens to me all the time.  Even little cars do it - though they are easier to see around/over/through.  Not sure what makes someone in a left-on-green-only lane want to pull up past the white line - not like they can go when traffic clears or something.  But i understand your special sort of rage.  My brother became a road rager when he bought his hybrid.  Somehow I think it is easier for "you people" to get enraged.  Here you are not polluting much and all these other polluting arses keep pissing you off....

This might be a downtown San Francisco speciality, but  what's even worse is when you're in right turn lane waiting for a pedestrian to cross in front of you, and that jackass lays on his horn, like he's expecting me to run the ped over or something.

I've been driving for work a lot and from what I've seen the worst drivers are in high-end SUV's... Mercedes, BMW, Land Rover, Porsche... even the really big, expensive American ones. More consistently then any other group of drivers I've noticed they drive like they don't give a fark if anyone else is on the road, and everyone needs to get out of their way.

i haven't seen this in a while, but I used to see, in my neighborhood, people in giant freaking SUVs blaze through red lights while honking.  how courteous.  2 tons of SUV doing 55 in 45 welllllll after the light turned red.  but at least you were honking at those that the right of way, letting them know you were coming through.

As a rule, right on red is allowed everywhere except NYC. Mostly the people who refuse to go seem to be elderly. Maybe they grew up in a simpler time where that wasn't allowed? Or maybe they're just plain senile and shouldn't be driving.

I like to refer to my Guidelines of the Road when it comes to traffic "laws".

1) Don't impede the flow of traffic (fark the speed limit, there are too many variables)
2) Don't yell/gesture while operating a vehicle
3) You can only control your actions
4) fark the police
4a) Unless their lights are on

I feel the road is pretty much fair game

I also find luxury SUV drivers to be terrible drivers.  But people who drive high-end BMWs are the worst.  I once got tailgated in the right lane by some douche in a 5 series during a really icy morning.  Bonehead eventually crashed into the barrier on an off-ramp.

Huh, I don't remember any no-right-on-red intersections here in S.F., though I've lived and/or worked here for 20 years ... I'm looking at downtown out my window right now (I work in Soma). But that says more about my refusal to drive in downtown S.F. than the actual signage...

All that said I'm glad this isn't Montreal or Boston or N.Y.C. Drivers there are nuts. I even drove to work today (rare, happens once a month or so) over the Bay Bridge at rush hour ... it was busy but everyone was calm and quiet and it was a super relaxing commute. I love California drivers, they're awesome.

This and cuppa. You drink your cup of coffee in your pickup truck. If you drink a cuppa in a pickmeup truck I hope you die horribly. I don't know why but both those words inspire a sort of homicidal rage in me, for no good reason, and because there's laws and shiat I can't ever act on it so I just go around silently hating on people that use these phrases. BTW, it's usually legal from a two-way as well. There's just a few states in the US that prohibit left on red onto a one-way street.

I like taking advantage of it because it always confuses the driver behind and often my passenger.

Well, ok, should have looked it up further. Wikipedia says only Alaska, Idaho, Michigan, Oregon and Washington allow the turn from a two-way street.
