Well I for one approve of this. Don't listen to all the Farkers crying "why bother" dude, it's easy to sit around and do nothing. That's done so well to stifle the WBC thus far, with every media outlet still publishing every protest they give.

Good on ya for the positive works described elsewhere in TFA too, sounds like he's doing good things around the world. No wonder Fark piles on the guy, he's just a dumb tryhard loser who isn't cynical enough to get on Fark and post about why things other people do are a waste of time.

Hope he hosts lots of pride events at the house too, just to make the neighborhood uncomfortable.

PoochUMD: Kome: WTF Indeed: Or you could, you know, just ignore them?

Silence is not as effective a tactic as you would think.

When a bunch of attention whores are looking for attention, not giving them attention is your only weapon.

How many people were talking about the WBC today prior to that house being painted and the number of new stories about the house? How many are now that the house has been painted? While their intentions were good, all they did was promote the WBC brand.

When they say on twitter that they are going to be at a funeral on the East Coast and thousands of people show up to anti-picket and it becomes leading national news, all you do is promote their brand. Meanwhile they don't even leave Kansas because the anti-protesters get more attention their original little protests ever did and now they don't even have to spend the gas money.

On the other hand, by counter-protesting, by making a big fuss of people who vocally and behaviorally show they don't agree with those views, they are accomplishing multiple goals. Yes, one of them is feeding attention whores, but that is just one consequence and it is a minor one. More importantly, it sends a loud message that there is a growing portion of the country that disagrees with those horrible views expressed loudly by attention whores like the WBC... views that are quietly held by a still large number of the country that aren't in the WBC. The more that is made of people saying "We disagree with this" the more people who are victimized by homophobia are aware that the nation's conscience is changing, that they are becoming more accepted, that it does get better, that equality for all is a realistic and attainable goal. Simply being silent too often sends the unintentional message that "we just don't care that people are so loudly oppressing a group of fellow Americans". Silence enables bullies more than confrontation, even if the bullies do want attention. So, f*ck all calls to ignore the trolls or whatever. My friends who are LGBT, and the millions of other LGBT adults, teens, and children in this country should know that we care enough about them to stand up to assholes like the WBC.

The problem with the WBC, and almost every anti-gay group out there, is that this  isn't a concrete problem--this is a problem of society. There are a  lot of people who just hate gays, women, and anyone who isn't a white rich male.

Telling WBC, or any other hate group, where to shove it--especially by making such an in-your-face point--is a solution. The WBC aren't just attention whores, they represent a lot of American hate, and that hate should be fought. This is a good way to do it. Ignoring the WBC wouldn't change a thing for anyone but the WBC; actions like this tell hateful people that society doesn't agree with them, and  that changes  society.

This.  And as bad as their "hate speech" is I'm always more disturbed by the militant pro-gay/ farkH8 side that demands adherence to their views and would gladly overlook the First and Eight Amendments if it meant achieving "equality" in the end.

[2.bp.blogspot.com image 400x257]

When one side is saying "You people are the cause of all misery on earth" "You will suffer for all eternity because you love the wrong people" "You're what's wrong with this country" and supporting state policies that prevent teachers and adults from intervening when LGBT teens and children are bullied to the point of suicide, and all other manner of crap... Yea, I can really see how people responding "You're a bunch of ignorant assholes, and because of it I'm going to do more to support equal rights for the LGBT community" is militantly pro-gay and hateful. Those poor f*cking babies having their rights to harass other law-abiding citizens trampled.

F*ck you for the false equivalence. Calling a bunch of assholes out for being racist, homophobic, sexist, or hateful in any other way and saying we are not a people that will stand for it is manifestly NOT intolerant or hateful in return. It's goddamn human decency to stand up to bullies, arsonists, kidnappers, murderers, and domestic terrorists who devote their lives to ruining those of other US citizens - whether it is WBC and gays or the pro-life groups and medical professionals who provide abortions to women or racist conservatives and Hispanics - is the exact f*cking opposite of intolerance and hate. If you don't like that there's a large segment of the population that feels passionately that "with liberty and justice for all" actually means something important, then just seriously f*ck you.

They can't sue over what another person does with their privately owned property.

Considering that Mama Phelps herself argued and WON before the Supreme Court I'd be careful  saying what the Westboro Baptist Church can or can't do legally.  Seriously, she won her case before the Supreme Court.  Not many people can say they've done that.

Meh, she won because it was pretty cut&dried: Do they have a right to protest under the 1st Amendment? Answer: Yes. Can a city create an ordinance that forbids them from protesting? Answer: No. A newly-minted attorney fresh out of law school could win that one. The only thing controversial in that whole issue was the challenge, not the WBC.

And as for ignoring them...this idea that ignoring a bully makes him go away is antiquated. Maybe it used to work when we were in grade school in the 60's (I doubt it), but for 21st century bullies with access to social media and 24-hour news channels, not so much. The WBC has gone out of its way to insert THEMSELVES into public discourse. They don't just go to public events after all, where it might be possible to pretend they aren't there--they are still out there disrupting people's private lives and most personal, painful moments with their horrible diatribes. I think it is too much to ask a family whose funeral is being picketed by a gaggle of fools with GOD IS GLAD YOUR LOVED ONE IS BURNING IN HELL signs to "just ignore them".

No, nowadays the only way to address people who are this awful and tasteless is to meet them on their own ground, and show them and any potential followers what horrible, evil people they truly are. Make anyone who might be tempted to agree with them ask themselves "Is this the kind of person you want to be like? Someone who violates another person's moment of grief?" In boxing, there is the theory of keeping your opponent constantly on the defensive and always backing up, and that's what's called for here. Don't let them reset their stance and regroup.

Don't be so quick to celebrate. The homophobic domestic terrorists of the WBC will dig up some ordinance, codicil, or rule giving standing to sue and argue it all the way to SCOTUS, as usual. They'll keep it tied up in court for perpetuity because that's what they do.

Unless of course a confidential informant tells the ATF they have illegal guns. Then you can just burn 'em out.

I can't believe I never considered the possibility until now, but what if Fred Phelps and his WBC have been trolling us all this time?

Fred is a Democrat and was a Civil Rights activist. What if he's really as liberal as his past would imply, and he cooked up this scheme to discredit anti-homosexual movements and accelerate society's acceptance of homosexuality, and also to discredit conservative extremism in general? What if it's all performance art on a massive scale?

It fits. It would explain why, after picketing funerals of people like Matthew Shepard who were homosexual and killed for that reason, they also went after the funerals of soldiers, carried posters saying "God Bless IEDs" and such, and basically making themselves hated for reasons that go far beyond mere opposition to homosexuality, lowering the bar each time (even threatening to protest at the funeral of the Sandy Hook child victims ― would someone who professes to believe as they do really do such a thing to kids, most of whom wouldn't even have been gay? Remember, Jesus said that anyone who offends a child would be better off being drowned to death!) thus tarring that with the same brush in the minds of the populace.

Statistically, shouldn't it be ~3% of them in any given generation, with the "quiverfull" folks just kinda asking for it?

Drake Equation time:

Given that there are 45k Southern Baptist Congregations, if (conservatively) half of their pastors (>22k) have sons, and 3% of them are gay, then 675 of them should have a gay son, at least.

Average it out over a generation and it's like 1-2 of these "scandals" per month, not counting the closet cases.

First Amendment rights on a privately owned house are HUGE. You add to that the fact that this particular display was intended to promote a political viewpoint, and the owner is bullet proof. City of Ladue v. Gilleo was a unanimous Supreme Court decision.

Also, please list the frivolous litigation that the Phelps clan has engaged in. Are you talking about where Indiana made it a felony to peacefully protest on public property within 500m of a funeral? Because again, the Supreme Court took Westboro's side in Synder v. Phelps.

So to summarize, you've got an organization that is conducting a textbook example of free speech - peaceful expression of an unpopular viewpoint on public property. Because their viewpoint is unpopular, our legislative and executive branch have tripped over each other to stop that speech. And because the organization goes to court to try to preserve their free speech rights, they "enjoy" litigation?

Everyone already knows the family is nuts. They're not called The Most Hated Family in America for nothing. So adding more vitriol is piling on/kicking a dead horse. It doesn't change the existing narrative, doesn't introduce any new ones, and the family wants you to do it.

There is nothing that can be done by any documentary filmmaker or news broadcast team or merry pranksters to improve society's understanding or relations with this Church nor is there anything anyone can say to discredit, denounce or sway them. Giving them more attention is like wrestling with a pig - you feel dirty afterward and the pig likes it.

The only solution, then, is to ignore them, but the media won't do that because the media can't help it - it is biased toward sensationalism and emotionally-charged rhetoric. Whenever there's a tragedy, the media is the first car to slow down and gawk at it. That's neither a good or bad thing, it's just what the media does.

Zul the Magnificent: "The only thing necessary for evil to flourish is for good men to do nothing."  Or words to that effect.

On the one hand, if ignoring these gaping a$$holes was effective I'd be all for it.  But I don't think that's likely to happen.  On the other hand--pass me that paintbrush, would you?  Thanks.

What Zul said.

freeforever: ZeroPly: So to summarize, you've got an organization that is conducting a textbook example of free speech - peaceful expression of an unpopular viewpoint on public property. Because their viewpoint is unpopular, our legislative and executive branch have tripped over each other to stop that speech. And because the organization goes to court to try to preserve their free speech rights, they "enjoy" litigation?

So.... when the anti-gay rights people stage their protests, they are just innocently expressing their opinion, whereas the pro gay rights side buys a house and paints a rainbow on it, they are jack-booted thugs who are out to destroy the Constitution.

This made sense to you at the time you wrote it, huh?  OK.

Just so you know, we're having a freak snow-storm in Topeka today.  So I don't know how much painting is getting done.

But I approve.  I'll be sure to drive by and see the place.

I'm changing my mind on Phelps. He doesn't preach violence. He doesn't press for laws against gays. He's just pushing his version of the Bible. Is he a mean, bitter jerk? Yes. Has any single person done more do advance the acceptance of gays? I can't think of one.
I don't think his animosity is grounded in gays, anyway. He hates the average American. He's trolling us on the First Amendment and Christianity, forcing us to take a side on an issue (homosexuality) the majority of us would prefer to ignore, and exploiting some of our hypocrisy toward free speech and the Bible.
He's fascinating and relevant - something most performance artists aren't.

Awesome. Two foaming at the mouth hate groups square off across a suburban street. I can't help but picture two groups of kids in snow forts winging snows balls at each other except they would use the old testament and tasteful decorating magazines for ammunition.

I was going to point out that this is just giving the WBC exactly what they want (attention and the impression that they're important and/or being attacked in the eyes of their supporters), but actually you bring up a good point.  Couldn't have been easy for the poor neighbor to get away from that house, property values can't be good that close to evil.

Kome: WTF Indeed: Or you could, you know, just ignore them?

Sometimes, a good deed is it's own reward.

It is kind of ironic that groups like WBC will become pretty much the pitiful equivalent of hallucinating street preachers because churches are finally, slowly, and - with a lot less resistance than anyone expected - getting dragged into the 20th century.
