Cerebral Knievel: What's stopping the Phelps klan from forming one, then issuing fines against the garishly decorated house bringing down property values?

HOAs are deed-restricted covenants. The most the Phelps clan could do at this point would be to ask if the activist would like to join their HOA, and then file a modification to the deed in court.

If you really don't want to be part of an HOA, it's possible to go to court and have your deed modified. But most HOAs will fight that with every legal recourse at their disposal.

Bah. Gay dudes in speedos making out right in front of them at every protest. And them ask them why they are such terrible parents for bringing their kids to these events.

I doubt they'll buckle but those kids are going to have have some pretty damn wierd anyway... May as well as throw that memory in the mix.

Don't fight them, play with their heads.

d3: Anyone who doesn't think God has a sense of humor doesn't pay enough attention to the numbers of staunch conservatives who have gay offspring.

Statistically, shouldn't it be ~3% of them in any given generation, with the "quiverfull" folks just kinda asking for it?

Drake Equation time:

Given that there are 45k Southern Baptist Congregations, if (conservatively) half of their pastors (>22k) have sons, and 3% of them are gay, then 675 of them should have a gay son, at least.

Average it out over a generation and it's like 1-2 of these "scandals" per month, not counting the closet cases.

Great idea, but I don't think he's thought his cunning plan all the way through. The first thing the dicks at WBC are going to do is call the city building inspector and at that point they'll be repainting the house a more appropriate color. Then there are the targets this guy and his buddy just painted on themselves in an intensely anti-gay community. He should buy Goodyear stock because that Prius is going to need a lot of new tires over the next few months, and perhaps some windshields. He may as well give up his plan to have a lawn, because it won't be long before someone paints a message onto it with bleach or herbicide. I give him about 8-10 months before the hostility breaks him and he flees, abandoning his $81,000 house and putting himself into debt that will follow him for years, maybe decades.

Great idea and I hope I'm wrong, but bigots are always willing to cross lines that normal folks aren't.

freeforever: ZeroPly: So to summarize, you've got an organization that is conducting a textbook example of free speech - peaceful expression of an unpopular viewpoint on public property. Because their viewpoint is unpopular, our legislative and executive branch have tripped over each other to stop that speech. And because the organization goes to court to try to preserve their free speech rights, they "enjoy" litigation?

This.  And as bad as their "hate speech" is I'm always more disturbed by the militant pro-gay/ farkH8 side that demands adherence to their views and would gladly overlook the First and Eight Amendments if it meant achieving "equality" in the end.

When the headline said "literally brilliant", I thought it was some sort of ingenious device that flashes bright lights in some manner that prevents WBC protests from being photographed, thus depriving them of attention.

This is, instead, a childish and counterproductive stunt.

When one side is saying "You people are the cause of all misery on earth" "You will suffer for all eternity because you love the wrong people" "You're what's wrong with this country" and supporting state policies that prevent teachers and adults from intervening when LGBT teens and children are bullied to the point of suicide, and all other manner of crap... Yea, I can really see how people responding "You're a bunch of ignorant assholes, and because of it I'm going to do more to support equal rights for the LGBT community" is militantly pro-gay and hateful. Those poor f*cking babies having their rights to harass other law-abiding citizens trampled.

F*ck you for the false equivalence. Calling a bunch of assholes out for being racist, homophobic, sexist, or hateful in any other way and saying we are not a people that will stand for it is manifestly NOT intolerant or hateful in return. It's goddamn human decency to stand up to bullies, arsonists, kidnappers, murderers, and domestic terrorists who devote their lives to ruining those of other US citizens - whether it is WBC and gays or the pro-life groups and medical professionals who provide abortions to women or racist conservatives and Hispanics - is the exact f*cking opposite of intolerance and hate. If you don't like that there's a large segment of the population that feels passionately that "with liberty and justice for all" actually means something important, then just seriously f*ck you.

Dear Jerk: I'm changing my mind on Phelps. He doesn't preach violence. He doesn't press for laws against gays. He's just pushing his version of the Bible. Is he a mean, bitter jerk? Yes. Has any single person done more do advance the acceptance of gays? I can't think of one.
I don't think his animosity is grounded in gays, anyway. He hates the average American. He's trolling us on the First Amendment and Christianity, forcing us to take a side on an issue (homosexuality) the majority of us would prefer to ignore, and exploiting some of our hypocrisy toward free speech and the Bible.
He's fascinating and relevant - something most performance artists aren't.

He's like the flip side of that Onion article:  "Gay rights parade sets back gay rights 50 years."

I can't believe I never considered the possibility until now, but what if Fred Phelps and his WBC have been trolling us all this time?

Fred is a Democrat and was a Civil Rights activist. What if he's really as liberal as his past would imply, and he cooked up this scheme to discredit anti-homosexual movements and accelerate society's acceptance of homosexuality, and also to discredit conservative extremism in general? What if it's all performance art on a massive scale?

It fits. It would explain why, after picketing funerals of people like Matthew Shepard who were homosexual and killed for that reason, they also went after the funerals of soldiers, carried posters saying "God Bless IEDs" and such, and basically making themselves hated for reasons that go far beyond mere opposition to homosexuality, lowering the bar each time (even threatening to protest at the funeral of the Sandy Hook child victims ― would someone who professes to believe as they do really do such a thing to kids, most of whom wouldn't even have been gay? Remember, Jesus said that anyone who offends a child would be better off being drowned to death!) thus tarring that with the same brush in the minds of the populace.

Possibly (some other Farker pointed out).  Certain colors could constitute residential zoning infractions.

ProfessorOhki: Good thing there's no HOA; they'd probably side with Phelps.

No, but there are almost certainly zoning restrictions on painting your home more than two colors.  Hopefully the guy looked them up before plunking down $81k.

If you were an upstart with a few charity ideas already going but wanted to step it up and get some bigger supporters, while showing yourself to be edgy and good hearted, and had an $85,000 marketing budget, how could you get more possitive exposure with that little amount? WBC is already known, a fewa articles dont help or hurt them. Those same articles help this guy and his friends immeasurably. he wins here for sure.  good play.  maximum ROI. I didnt even know guat kids had worms let alone there are projects to fix them...

2013-03-19 04:35:42 PM

Electromax: Well I for one approve of this. Don't listen to all the Farkers crying "why bother" dude, it's easy to sit around and do nothing. That's done so well to stifle the WBC thus far, with every media outlet still publishing every protest they give.

Good on ya for the positive works described elsewhere in TFA too, sounds like he's doing good things around the world. No wonder Fark piles on the guy, he's just a dumb tryhard loser who isn't cynical enough to get on Fark and post about why things other people do are a waste of time.

Hope he hosts lots of pride events at the house too, just to make the neighborhood uncomfortable.

This is what will make the purchase of that particular house worth all the negativity and doubt going on right now.

Sudlow: If the street is zoned for residential use, the church can probably seek some sort of redress for a zoning violating in having a social services agency in the house and that the paint on the house reduces the value of their property. One things the Phelps family enjoys is litigation. This is just handing them a huge opportunity to get more attention.

Goose meet gander.

IANAL, but I bet the hate-church would also be guilty of those things.

Zoning laws aren't retroactive.  Absent destroying the bulk of the building changes to the zoning ordnance would not be effective.  Not to mention that color or tone wouldn't fall under the normal construction, usage, bulk, or height aspects of the zoning ordnance.  Appearance regulations are something you'd find more often in a special district (historical, commercial, etc).
