why would they put a retired player on the cover?

That's weird, the only 1/16 match up we can vote for (right now) is RGIII vs. Tannehill.

They don't have to pay him.

antidisestablishmentarianism: Oh man, we need to make this happen. This needs to happen. Imagine the confusion on release day.

Unfortunately, a handful (relatively speaking) of internet commenters on one website won't be able to defeat the millions of weed-and-beer fueled Madden fans out there.

You'd have to get Reddit and /b/ in on this for it to have any hope of happening, and /b/ doesn't give two shiats about sports, though you might convince them to do it for the lulz™; but for that to happen, they'd have to get why it would be funny, and that requires knowledge of sports.

Maybe work on a viral facebook campaign to make it happen?

And I say again...so farkers are back to caring about EA again?  That Simcity hate sure was brief.

Oh, and also remember that all (well, the vast majority, at least) of internet polls are taken as a suggestion. EA won't gamble millions of dollars worth of marketing on what anonymous people on the internet say. If we picked The Jake, they could just as easily say "So, it turned out that Montana won, and he'll be on the cover."

EA actually adheres pretty strictly to the online poll results, as evidenced by the fact that Peyton Hillis got past the first round of voting, let alone onto the cover.

2. Why would it be funny?

Hell, just eliminating JOE MONTANA in the first round would be pretty cool, let alone winning the whole thing, lol.

netweavr: They don't have to pay him.

no, the NFL would have to pay...it wasn't widely reported but just a couple days ago, a group of retired NFL players and the NFL settled a lawsuit relating to the use of the players' likenesses (is that a word?)

this story doesn't give a lot of detail but in print, i read where the players objected to their image in streaming content, NFL-licensed DVDs and something like 'and other game-related video images' which I didn't know if they meant video games or telecasts or streaming.

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2013/03/18/nfl-retired-players- se ttle-lawsuit-over-use-of-players-images/

a really fascinating case that i think is still in the preliminary stages, on the issue of "likenesses" and specifically video games, is that of mid 90's UCLA phenom Ed O'Bannon, who led the Bruins to a NCAA title but never really panned out in the NBA.  He bumped around for a few years then his career ended.  well, fairly recently, some video game company got permission from the NCAA to use various players on games, but O'Bannon objected, saying he never gave permission.  as i understand, the NCAA is making the distinction that as an amateur athlete voluntarily participating in NCAA athletics, the NCAA controls the use of his rights.  His angle is "you guys are getting paid off my likeness, and i'm not getting anything."

pretty interesting stuff.

2: Putting Delhomme on the cover of Madden would be the equivalent of putting Bip Roberts on the cover of MLB The Show or Mookie Blaylock on the cover of NBA 2K.

jake delhomme had one of the worst all time QB performances in the playoffs 5-6 years ago, throwing i think 5 INTs, 0TDs, and losing.  and oh yeah, IT WAS HIS BIRTHDAY.  so someone here a few years ago started a tradition called "the Jake", which is given tot he QB that had the worst day.  there's a long writeup and images and so on.  people love it.  i don't really get it but who cares.

that's farking funny.

although in fairness, didn't Mookie make a couple of all stars?

/which i guess would be irrelevant, as Delhomme played in a super bowl and but for Vinatieri booting a 45yarder late, would have a ring.  ehh. like i siad i don't really get the jake but hey, people dig it.

That was after Hillis was coming off of a huge season, and actually kinda made sense. To give it to a QB whose most memorable performance is one of the worst of all time doesn't. Also, they can always just manipulate the numbers themselves through the poll so it looks legit.

/had Hillis in fantasy that year

i don't really remember much abotu that game.  2004 super bowl / 2003 season?  i think that was when the Stones played an awful halftime show.  or was that Nipplegate?

Hey EA, why don't you fix Madden so you're not immediately sacked every.single.farking.time you run a play action pass?  Or fix it so that it's at least theoretically possible to catch an out-route in-bounds without a below-average cornerback with a rocket up his ass insta-teleport to the ball from 50 yards away for a one-handed interception.  Then maybe I'll think about buying your shiatty ass product again.

It was the nipple.  Carolina rallied to tie the game late, John Kasay kicked the ball out of bounds, and the Patriots predictably got a couple first downs and kicked the winner.

YUP!  I switched to FIFA games and am much happier. Plus, and i know you wont believe this, they actually update the gameplay each year and fix the glitches. Plus if an option bombs they nuke it from the next year's game. I know it cant be the same development team.

shiat that's right, i do remember that (kasay booting it OOB).  Didn't he kick the FG to tie?  I recall him going from hero to goat in about 60 seconds.

netweavr: That's good news,

also, i think part of the argument (it was one of those "outside the lines" a few months ago, so i'm hazy on the details) is that O'Bannon concedes that while a player is in college, the NCAA can use that player's likeness, but, news flash, he played at UCLA like, 1993-1996.  I recall him saying basically, "it is 2012, and the NCAA is cashing in 'today' on stuff I did 16 years ago."

No it was a Ricky Proehl TD catch, just like when the Rams tied the Patriots a few years earlier.  Kasay did make a 50-yd FG earlier in the game.

How the heck is Antonio Gates a 16 seed to Colin Kaepernick's 1?  I'm guessing the seeds are random or do they really want Kaepernick out the first round.

A young, on-fire QB in a huge media market who just almost won a Super Bowl and is favored to win the next one while running the most buzzed-about offense since Bill Walsh versus...an old tight end from maybe the most frequently disappointing franchise in football that hasn't had a great season in years and is best remembered today as a dude who used to catch TDs when his foot wasn't hurt. Yeah, how'd that happen.

Explains Montana being the other #1.  Although he deserves a #1 seed more than Kaepernick.

rickythepenguin: His angle is "you guys are getting paid off my likeness, and i'm not getting anything."

Well, at least for the games I've played, all of these guys have only jersey numbers and aren't really designed to look a LOT like the real players. They don't use photos for the players in the game, unlike pro sports games.

I'm interested to see what happens.. I think the entities who use footage and actual photos of former players (ie: CBS and everyone who broadcasts the NCAA tournament, as well as the NCAA itself, and most likely each player's respective alma mater) are the ones who deserve to be sued, and I don't know if the video game argument holds as much water.
